Five Ways to Find Your Fitness Motivation

Posted: at 5:11 pm

MISSION, KS--(Marketwire -05/31/12)- (Family Features) Even the most dedicated exercise enthusiast can hit a workout rut, but there are a few ways you can stay motivated, whether it's adding a new class into your routine or ensuring you're outfitted in the right gear. Read on for the latest trends in staying on track:

1. Set goals, track progress - One of the best ways to stay motivated is to set goals, track progress, and share results. A great way to keep your goals and successes top of mind is keeping a visual chart on your fridge or bedroom wall. Not only will you feel accomplished when you check off the days you worked out, but it is also an easy way to track your progress and celebrate milestones.

2. Add variety - One reason people tend to quit an exercise program is boredom, so make sure you are challenging yourself. A great way to do so is mixing up your routine with the latest fitness workouts like TRX Suspension Training or Crossfit. Not only does a varied workout regimen prevent boredom, it also ensures you're working different muscles and areas of your body. And speaking of mixing it up, downloading a new playlist can give you the right heart-thumping boost to keep your energy levels up.

3. Buddy up - Another way to combat boredom is working out with a friend. Scheduling a workout in advance ensures you're more likely to stick to your fitness commitments. As the old adage says, time passes much more quickly when you're having fun.

4. Get the right gear - Whether you're a seasoned fitness pro, or you're just starting a new regimen, it's important to sport the right apparel to keep you looking and feeling your best. For women, this means finding the perfect the sports bra.

"There really is no getting around it," states LaJean Lawson, Ph.D. and Champion's sports bra expert. "Having the right sports bra is key to fitness success! Make sure that you have a style that both fits properly and is appropriate for your activity level -- you're not going to get a good workout if you aren't comfortable."

Now it is even easier to find the perfect sports bra with the launch of ChampionSportsBras.com. This site offers active women educational tools and tips, such as a Bra Finder that finds the right sports bra for your active lifestyle, a Blog with healthy living tips, even a Bra Registry that will remind you when it's time for a new sports bra.

5. Reward yourself - It's important to reward yourself when you reach milestones -- both big and small. In fact, if you set only major goals, you're more likely to get frustrated and quit before you make much progress. Instead, set small, achievable goals for specific time parameters, as well as an overall goal. Don't let setbacks get you down, and make sure you celebrate each time you reach a new level with something special, such as an ice cream cone, trip to the movies, or a massage.

Longevity the mark at school

Posted: at 5:10 pm

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. Teachers retiring at Fountain Central High School have enjoyed their time with the students and staff.

Dan Halladay, Phil Rash and Dorie Johnson are leaving with more than 30 years at the school. And while Brad Smiths time at Fountain Central is much shorter, he has been in education for 40 years.

I wanted to teach since I was in elementary school, Halladay said. I liked grading, and I liked teaching other kids.

Halladay was involved in coaching, including 10 years with girls basketball, one year in baseball, three years in girls track, 10 years as a football assistant and 10 years with junior high football.

I have really enjoyed it, Halladay said. We have very good community support. We have tons of great people.

He will continue to work with a football officiating crew and umpire girls softball. He also sells sports cards on eBay.

Halladay is proud that four of his former students are now school superintendents.

Many others are pillars of their community, he said. I have lots of friendships from teachers and coaches.

Halladay estimated that 60 percent of his students now are second generation from local families.

Halladay took students to Russia in 1995 and has taken students to Germany four times, a program that continues annually at Fountain Central.

Boston Scientific Increases Longevity Projections for Its U.S. Defibrillators

Posted: at 5:10 pm

NATICK, Mass., May 31, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved revised product labeling for the Boston Scientific Corporation (BSX) INCEPTA, ENERGEN, PUNCTUA, COGNIS and TELIGEN implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (CRT-Ds), to reflect increased longevity projections for these devices. The longevity projections are based on data submitted to the FDA and vary for each device dependent on the model type and settings.

Projected device longevity exceeds 10 years for some models of Boston Scientific ICDs, and approaches eight years for its CRT-D devices, and nearly double that of comparable competitive device models (1,2,3). The company backs these devices with warranties of up to 10 years* in the U.S. and many other international markets. Depending on the model, the device warranties are also up to twice as long as other currently-marketed comparable devices.

"We're pleased with the new labeling for our U.S. defibrillator products which provides doctors and patients with additional assurance about the longevity and reliability of these devices," said Kenneth Stein, M.D., chief medical officer of Boston Scientific's Cardiac Rhythm Management Group. "Boston Scientific ICDs and CRT-Ds benefit from our proprietary advanced battery technology. The new battery was first introduced in the COGNIS and TELIGEN devices in 2008 and has now been incorporated into our newest devices with up to a 10-year warranty."

"The Sudden Cardiac Death in Heart Failure Trial (SCD-HeFT) long-term follow-up study results, which were recently presented at the Heart Rhythm Society annual meeting in Boston, demonstrates that ICD therapy continues to benefit patients for a median follow-up of 11 years. Particularly in New York Heart Association Class II patients, it appears that an ICD may prolong a patient's life for at least a decade by rescuing the patient from sudden cardiac death," said Jeanne Poole, M.D., director, Arrhythmia Service and Electrophysiology Laboratory at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. "By helping to mitigate the frequency of replacing an ICD or CRT-D device, this technology provides us with the potential to reduce the complications associated with replacement procedures and to reduce healthcare costs. Not only does the patient benefit from fewer surgeries, but the financial benefit can be significant."

Practical Nutrition: Eating for two

Posted: May 30, 2012 at 9:15 pm

If you've ever been pregnant, you may have thought "I feel fat!" While pregnant women become larger, they're growing a baby, not just packing on the pounds.

Weight gain associated with pregnancy has very real components. On average it's made up of about 7.5 pounds baby, 7 pounds maternal stores of protein, fat and other nutrients, 4 pounds extra blood, 4 pounds other body fluids, 2 pounds uterus growth, 2 pounds breast tissue, 1.5 pounds placenta, and 2 pounds amniotic fluid.

Healthy weight gain is based on pre-pregnancy weight and body mass index, or BMI. A woman who is underweight (BMI less than 18.5) would need to gain 28 to 40 pounds. Those at a healthy weight, BMI 18.5 to 24.9, should gain 25 to 35 pounds.

An overweight woman (BMI 25 to 29.9) should gain 15 to 25 pounds, but if she's obese (BMI higher than 30) only 11 to 20 pounds.

Women expecting twins or triplets may need to gain 35 to 55 pounds depending on their BMI.

To determine your BMI, go to http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi.

Unfortunately, many women take the old saying "eating for two" too seriously and gain extra weight. It can lead to health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure during pregnancy. And it can be difficult to lose that extra weight after delivery, which can add up between pregnancies.

For most women, a mere 300 extra calories per day is all that's needed to achieve the desired weight.

Calcium is important for mom's bone health as well as the baby's. Select three to four servings of dairy products daily to meet these needs. One serving equals 8 ounces milk, 8 ounces yogurt, or 1.5 to 2 ounces of cheese.

Pregnant women need to consume iron-rich foods daily. Include enriched and fortified grains and cereal, red meats, liver, fish, chicken, dried beans, nuts, dried fruits and leafy green vegetables throughout the day.

Latest Fitness Craze: Lose Weight While Talking on the Phone

Posted: at 9:15 pm

SAN FRANCISCO, May 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Office workers are getting fatter, not fitter, according to recent reports showing obesity rates skyrocketing.

But a new wireless phone headset can help office workers lose weight simply by walking around when talking on the phone. The average person who adds 1,500 steps a day can lose up to 500 calories a day, which translates into 1 pound a week or 50 pounds a year when they use the OfficeRunner Wireless Headset System from Sennheiser.

"The less you sit, the happier and healthier you'll be," said Mike Faith, president of Headsets.com, America's leading provider of office telephone headsets for large companies and small businesses. "The Office Runner makes staying in shape simple and natural for people who use the phone every day."

To see Mike exercising effortlessly with the Office Runner, check out this video.

"If you're like me, you find it hard to go to the gym every day. But it is easy to walk around and lose weight if you aren't chained to your desk by a corded phone. With the Sennheiser Office Runner, you can make and receive calls up to 400 feet from your desk -- and the battery lasts 12 hours, so you can walk around wherever you want in the office," he said.

Many people say they get bored by exercising at the gym, but nearly everyone finds walking easy. And most people have to talk on the phone. By combining both of these fun activities, people stand a fighting chance to lose weight, improve posture and be more productive, he said.

Headsets.com is sponsoring a contest with winners receiving a Fitbit Ultra, the market-leading wireless all-day fitness tracker that also monitors sleep. The Fitbit Ultra monitors all-day activity to provide real-time feedback on steps, distance, calories burned, and stairs climbed to encourage people to walk more and be more active.

"We want to find -- and reward -- the fittest office worker. This gives new meaning to people who can walk and talk at the same time," he said. "For people who want to lose weight, this is a chance for them to walk their talk."

Having an office staff that is physically fit can also lead to a healthy bottom line.

A research report by Richard Yonge, Ph.D. entitled "Movement in the Workplace -- Ideas for Boosting Health and Profits" shows, "There is increasing evidence that prolonged physical inactivity is not just bad for health it is also bad for the bottom line."

Clint Dempsey in fitness race to face Brazil

Posted: at 9:15 pm

Clint Dempsey might not be fit enough to start for the United States against Brazil in an international friendly Wednesday night. The Fulham attacker, who scored 17 goals in the Premier League this season, missed the last day of the season with a groin injury. The injury isn't a concern anymore, but fitness levels after several weeks out are.

"I'm lacking a little bit of match fitness, but [I] continue working hard," Dempsey said. "I felt OK. As far as getting on the ball I felt confident. But I lacked a little bit of fitness getting around the field and being able to pressurize defensively."

The 29-year-old sat out Saturday's friendly with Scotland. Landon Donovan, who scored a hat trick, and Jose Torres started in the wide attacking positions for the 5-1 win. They might get the nod against Brazil as well if Jurgen Klinsmann doesn't feel Dempsey is ready to start.

"We'll look at him tomorrow we have another training session and then we'll take it from there," Klinsmann said. "We're not stressing out about it."

Klinsmann did note the other 22 players are all fit, a good situation for me the coach to be in.

The other player to miss the Scotland game, Jozy Altidore, should be ready to start. The AZ Alkmaar striker praised Dempsey's season, which saw the Texan become the first American to score a hat trick in the Premier League as well as become the all-time top scoring American in England.

"You can see the difference between the now and the first year he came [to Europe]," Altidore said. "The first year he was a bit raw, second year he was getting the hang of it, playing. He fell out of the lineup, he got back in it a testament to his personality, his character. I think these five years say what he is as a person a fighter."

The United States will miss that tenacity and goal-threat if Dempsey can't play. However, Klinsmann may use his star off the bench.

"I'm not 90 minutes fit but I'm ready to go in whatever capacity the coach wants to utilze me," Dempsey said.

Highmark Extends Relationship with Healthways to Continue to Offer SilverSneakers® Fitness Program Through 2013

Posted: at 9:15 pm

As part of its long-standing commitment to improving the health and well-being of older adult members, Highmark Inc. has agreed to a two-year extension through 2013 to offer the Healthways (HWAY) SilverSneakers Fitness Program to eligible members. SilverSneakers, an exercise program designed to keep older adults active and healthy, is offered to more than 460,000 eligible Highmark Medicare Advantage members in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Using proven methodologies based upon more than 16 years of science and outcomes, the SilverSneakers Fitness Program increases physical activity in older adults, resulting in higher well-being and lower health care costs. The program engages participants in active behavior change through access to a variety of physical activity venues and senior-specific programming that incorporates physical activity, nutrition and cognitive and social experiences.

In some of our service areas, Highmark is the only health insurance provider to offer SilverSneakers, and this relationship provides a value-added benefit that ultimately keeps our members healthy and happy, said Cindy Dellecker, senior vice president of Highmark Senior Markets.

Recent findings from the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index indicate that older adults participating in SilverSneakers enjoy significantly higher overall well-being despite the increasing disease burden that comes with old age. A study in a recent edition of Population Health Managementalso indicates that respondents with higher well-being scores demonstrate lower utilization and hospital admittance rates.

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index findings demonstrate that we are on the right track by addressing the well-being among older adults in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, as lower well-being directly influences health status and utilization of health services, said Ben R. Leedle, Jr., Healthways president and chief executive officer. By continuing to offer SilverSneakers to its Medicare Advantage members, Highmark is demonstrating their ongoing commitment to their older adult members through a time-tested, proven solution that provides a unique combination of exercise and social support to improve not only the physical health of their members, but also their overall well-being.

Highmark has provided SilverSneakers access to eligible Medicare Advantage members since January 1, 2004. In 2011, more than 50 percent of new Highmark enrollees stated that their SilverSneakers membership was their first fitness center membership, with 70 percent citing personal health concerns as their reason for joining.

The SilverSneakers Fitness Program was founded in 1993 and serves more than 9 million eligible members. The Healthways fitness center network offers convenient access to 14,000 participating fitness and wellness facilities nationwide.

CKO Kickboxing Health Fitness Franchise Continues Rapid Growth with New Jacksonville, NC Gym Opening on June 2

Posted: at 9:15 pm

JACKSONVILLE, N.C., May 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- CKO Kickboxing, one of the fastest growing health fitness franchises, will celebrate the Grand Opening of its newest cardio kickboxing gym on Saturday, June 2, at 1368 Piney Green Road #9, Willis Plaza in Jacksonville, NC. The gym will serve the military and their families stationed in Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Cherry Point Air Station, Camp Geiger, Camp Johnson and Marine Corps Air Station New River.

The high-quality cross training gym provides a family-friendly setting to residents of Jacksonville who are looking for an alternative to Pilates, yoga, martial arts, cross-fit and spinning classes.

Grand Opening festivities are in the works for Saturday, June 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to CKO Kickboxing of Jacksonville owner Sarah Bentley, a former Marine Corps Sergeant who had once been stationed at Camp Lejeune.

Plans include a live broadcast from 99.5 the X and a big party atmosphere with refreshments, raffles, venders, balloon clown and demonstrations of kickboxing.

CKO Kickboxing, whose franchisees include many former military members, is offering a 10 percent discount to current and former service personnel as well as police and fire personnel.

For Ms. Bentley opening a CKO Kickboxing franchise was a dream come true.

"Like many other CKO Kickboxing franchise owners, I was a member first. I loved the workout. When my husband was transferred to Camp Lejeune, I found out that they didn't have kickboxing. They do have martial arts, but they don't focus on the exercise portion the way CKO Kickboxing does," she said.

While talking with CKO Franklin and CKO Augusta owner Darlene Palley, she found out how she could move to North Carolina and still do kickboxing the CKO way.

"Iheard about the news report on Fox News about CKO Kickboxing wanting to expand their franchise. I spoke to Joe Andreula, president of CKO Kickboxing, and everything worked out great," she said.

"I was going to go into nursing because I like helping people. Then I realized that I wanted to help people before they got to that point of needing a nurse," she said. "I love the energy in a kickboxing workout. You can definitely see the improvement. You can see their moods change. You can see their bodies change. Cardio kickboxing creates healthier, happier people."

AssureRx Health Raises $12.5 Million Series C Financing

Posted: at 9:15 pm

MASON, Ohio, May 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --AssureRx Health, Inc. today announced the closing of a $12.5 million Series C financing. The personalized medicine company, which provides clinically-relevant information to help physicians select the right drug for individual neuropsychiatric patients, will use the funds to increase commercial activities for its two flagship pharmacogenomic products, GeneSightRx Psychotropic and GeneSightRx ADHD, as well as next generation product development activities.

The financing was led by Four Rivers Group and existing investors Claremont Creek Ventures and Sequoia Capital. The financing also included participation of existing investors Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Mayo Clinic, CincyTech, Allos Ventures, as well as new investors jVen Capital and Alafi Capital. New investors Four Rivers, jVen Capital, and Alafi Capital bring to AssureRx Health further expertise and partnering connections to help AssureRx Health continue building its leadership position in psychiatric pharmacogenomics.

"Our goal is to build the leading clinical informatics company providing pharmacogenomic and other treatment decision support products to help physicians individualize the treatment of patients with neuropsychiatric and other disorders," said James S. Burns, president and CEO of AssureRx Health. "Proceeds from the Series C financing will be used to expand sales coverage, sponsor multiple clinical studies, and develop new products to help accelerate our leadership position in psychiatric personalized medicine."

Warren Hogarth, partner at Sequoia Capital, said, "AssureRx products have the potential to change the way physicians select the appropriate medications for each of their patients. AssureRx is at the cutting edge of providing treatment decision support products for a very large global psychiatric market. We believe that AssureRx Health is building a world class company."

John Steuart, managing director of Claremont Creek Ventures said, "AssureRx has enormous potential to lead the transformation of neuropsychiatric care toward personalized patient treatment. GeneSightRx Psychotropic, GeneSightRx ADHD and future pharmacogenomic products hold the promise for faster, better patient outcomes and less costly care. We believe that AssureRx products have the potential for significant adoption by the psychiatric community, leading ultimately to incorporating pharmacogenomics into routine psychiatric practice guidelines."

From a simple cheek swab, the GeneSightRx technology measures and analyzes clinically important genetic variants that determine how a patient's unique genetic make-up affects his or her ability to tolerate or effectively respond to psychotropic medications. Patient-specific genetic information obtained through GeneSightRx can assist physicians in the process of selecting appropriate antidepressant and antipsychotic medications for individual patients.
