Integrative Nutrition Holds First International Conference

Posted: June 30, 2012 at 3:11 pm

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 30, 2012

The Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN), the worlds largest nutrition school, held its first international conference earlier this month in London, England. The inaugural IINternational Conference brought together students and graduates from 24 countries on June 9-10 for the opportunity to collaborate with other health professionals and wellness experts and to sharpen essential entrepreneurial skills.

Our first major conference held outside the USA was truly inspiring, says Integrative Nutrition founder Joshua Rosenthal. It was possible thanks to the hard work and initiative of two of our outstanding students, Luisa Kerdel Blatnik and Amanda Cook, who coordinated the event. When students come to me with a plan to organize their peers and elevate the entire community, I can only respond with gratitude and enthusiasm. Thats really what Integrative Nutrition is all about, and I look forward to seeing other students follow in their footsteps.

Integrative Nutritions flagship course, the IIN Health Coach Training Program, teaches students essential nutrition education, health coaching, and business skills and fosters the confidence thats necessary for graduates to launch thriving, entrepreneurial careers. The courses innovative online learning platform reaches students all over the globe, and in 2012 the Integrative Nutrition community has grown to over 25,000 students and graduates in more than 96 countries.

The success of this grassroots conference reflects that same spirit of ambition, achievement, and global awareness. Luisa and I organized this conference because the students in our European study groups wanted a chance to connect in person, Cook said. Kerdel Blatnik added, This took place only three months after we first pitched the idea to Joshua by the elevator at the Mega Conference in Long Beach, California it really gives new meaning to the term elevator speech!

Keynote speakers and best-selling authors Gabrielle Bernstein (Add More ~ing To Your Life, Spirit Junkie) and Simon Brown (Modern Day Macrobiotics, The Feng Shui Bible) both gave inspiring talks that reinforced Integrative Nutritions holistic approach to health, wellness, and success. Bernstein shared that the key to developing a successful business is playing to your own personal strengths and doing what feels effortless, natural, and fun. Wellness expert Brown echoed the sentiment and emphasized that an optimistic approach to life has a direct impact on ones health.

Im so excited to be able to connect with our ever-growing global community, says Rosenthal. The speakers were stellar, we learned inspiring new concepts, and we had a lot of fun, too. The success of this conference only reinforces my commitment to further support and expand our international presence.

About The Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) Founded by Joshua Rosenthal, MScEd, in 1992, the Institute for Integrative Nutrition has grown from a small classroom of passionate individuals to a global community of over 25,000 students and graduates in 96 countries worldwide. Tiger Woods' Fitness Carries Him Through Heat, into Contention at Congressional

Posted: at 3:10 pm

COMMENTARY | Though his health has been in question in recent years, it was the fitness of Tiger Woods that allowed him to overcome a shaky start and put himself back into contention at the AT&T National at Congressional Country Club.

The Southern California native and current Florida resident dealt with a heat index of 107 degrees and managed a 3-under 68 on Friday to move to 2-under for the tournament through two rounds. He was clearly comfortable and undaunted by the severe temperatures, which dominated the tournament talk as much as the difficulty of the course and supreme play of the leaders.

Moving into the weekend, Woods will have confidence and knowledge that some of his competitors may not be as prepared as he is to deal with the extreme heat wave that will continue to plague the Washington D.C. area.

Even though he's had success at this difficult test before, the sports world still needs to see a major championship victory from the current world No. 4 to consider him back to form. Without it, he's just another standout PGA TOUR player.

That's the standard that he set for himself over the stretch of a legendary career that includes 72 professional victories. It's a standard that he'll have to live up to in order to get his most stalwart critics to believe in him once again.

At age 36, his dedication to fitness could be exactly what allows him to remain competitive for many more years to come. Though he has had significant knee issues that stemmed from his rigorous workout regimen, that same commitment to staying in shape could bring his ultimate goal of surpassing jack Nicklaus' 18 professional majors within reach.

Woods is at the forefront of a generation that has placed a premium on athleticism in golf -- gone are the days of the best players in the world looking like they just got done scarfing down a hot dog and a six pack of beer at the local municipal course. Players like Woods and those who grew up watching and emulating his every move are now elite athletes.

Whether or not Woods' fitness translates into a win at Congressional will be worth following through the weekend.

It's a pretty good golf tournament, too.

New school nutrition standards on horizon

Posted: June 29, 2012 at 4:16 pm

Report: Budgets will benefit as well as waistlines

PORTSMOUTH A recent study has reaffirmed what local school officials already knew: Student health and school budgets can both benefit from higher nutrition standards.

The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recently completed a health impact assessment to examine how the U.S. Department of Agriculture's updated nutrition standards would affect student health and school revenues.

The USDA is preparing to issue policies requiring that food and beverages sold outside of federal school meal programs meet minimum nutrition standards. These include items sold in vending machines, school stores and cafeteria "a la carte" lines.

The health impact assessment found that national nutrition standards for snack foods and drinks would reduce students' consumption of unhealthy items during the school day. According to the report, many children eat roughly half of their daily calories at school.

According to the report, the spike in childhood obesity that occurred between 1988 and 2002 could have been substantially decreased by a modest reduction of 110 to 165 calories per day. The study found that the past three decades were marked by overweight and obesity prevalence rates more than tripling among children and adolescents.

The research found that many schools sell high-calorie, low-nutrient snacks to students of all ages instead of healthier options. The analysis also found that, when schools and districts adopted strong nutrition standards, they generally did not experience a decrease in revenue overall. In fact, the study found, many schools may be losing valuable revenue from their food service departments when students buy snacks instead of healthier breakfasts or lunches.

"The evidence is clear and compelling," said Jessica Donze Black, director of the Kids' Safe and Healthful Foods Project, in response to the analysis. "Implementing strong national nutrition standards to make the snacks and beverages our children consume healthier is something that schools and districts can afford. The USDA should do all it can to finalize and help implement strong standards."

In Portsmouth, there has already been a move to provide students with healthier lunch options. Deb Riso took over as the district's nutrition director at the start of the past school year, and she implemented a new lunch menu that she said costs the district no extra money but provides students with much healthier options.

Riso noted that when pizza was available every day, there were students who would eat it every day. The menu Riso developed replaced daily pizza with many varieties of foods made practically from scratch.

Fitness Myths To Avoid

Posted: at 4:15 pm

With so many people offering advice on weight loss, it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. All too often Ive overheard a hardworking gym-goer sharing a well-meaning but ill-informed tip with another exerciser. And Im not the only one whos heard fitness folklore being swapped on the training room floor. I spoke to top experts in the field to find out the common fitness myths they hear from clients. From the pseudo miracles of the fat-burning zone to the misguided magic of working out on an empty stomach, here are the fitness falsehoods you should never follow.

Myth #1: The best way to lose weight is to drastically cut calories

Our bodies are smarter than we think, said Jari Love, star of the Get Extremely Ripped: 1000 Hardcore DVD. When we eat too little, our body believes that its starving so our metabolism slows down and holds onto fat as a potential energy source. A much better approach: Eat more often, but eat less food at one timeand focus on these 7 Foods Not to Ditch When You Diet. For the fastest weight loss, break up your total daily calorie allotmentdont eat fewer than 1,200 calories if youre a woman or fewer than 1,800 calories if youre a maninto five to six small meals to keep your metabolism humming.

Myth #2: Heavy weights will bulk you up

This just isnt possible for most women, said personal trainer and Prevention contributing editor Chris Freytag. Ladies have too much estrogen in their hormone makeup. Yes, heavier weights build muscle and strength, but most of us women arent lifting anything so heavy that we are at risk for building man muscles. Plus, muscle is the secret to a revved up metabolism, as it burns more calories than more fat, even when youre sitting on the couch or at your desk.

Myth #3: Keep your heart rate in the fat-burning zone

If youve been exercising at 60 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate in order to shed flab faster, you could be slowing your slimdown. The fat-burning zone is a complete myth, said Wayne Westcott, Prevention advisory board member and fitness research director at Quincy College. While its true that you burn a higher percentage of fat calories when exercising at a moderate pace, you burn fewer calories overall. For instance, if you get on a treadmill and walk at a 3.5 MPH pace for 30 minutes, you might burn 250 calories. If you raise the speed to 7 miles per hour, youd burn 500. Bottom line? Its much better to go at the faster speed.

Myth #4: Boosting cardio is the best way to bypass a plateau

The most effective way to lose weight is to include both cardio and weights in your routine, said Love. One study found that when individuals cycled for 30 minutes a day, they lost three pounds of fat and gained a half pound of muscle in eight weeks. But individuals who cycled for 15 minutes and weight trained for 15 minutes a day lost 10 pounds of fat and gained two pounds of calorie-burning muscle.

Myth #5: Ab exercises are the fastest way to a flat belly

Health reform sticks: Now what?

Posted: at 4:15 pm

In one of the most highly anticipated rulings in decades, the U.S. Supreme Court largely upheld the federal health care reform law.

So now what?

The answers, like the polarized debate over health reform, fall along party lines. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has vowed to undo the law if he's elected, while Democrats have predicted the law will help millions of uninsured people finally get coverage.

It remains to be seen whether opponents will be successful in chipping away at the law or repealing it altogether after November's election.

Assuming the sweeping Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act stands against political attacks, here's what the Supreme Court's ruling means for people in the following life circumstances:

Starting in 2014, health insurers will not be allowed to deny coverage or charge you a higher premium because of your gender or because you have an illness or health condition. About half of Americans have so-called pre-existing conditions, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Also in 2014, health insurance marketplaces, called exchanges, will open in every state. Individuals and small businesses will be able to shop for coverage through the exchanges.

Under the court's ruling, the individual mandate stands. The mandate requires virtually everyone to buy health insurance if they don't have it. Those who refuse will face a tax penalty.

But there are exceptions.

You're exempt from the mandate if your income falls below the tax-filing threshold (currently $9,500 for individuals and $19,000 for married couples) or you have to spend more than 8 percent of your income on health insurance premiums. A family of four with an income between $61,000 and $150,000 would likely be exempt from the mandate because estimated premiums would eat up too much income, according to a report prepared for the Kaiser Family Foundation by Jonathan Gruber, an economics professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Health care reform: How it impacts your insurance coverage

Posted: at 2:17 am

The Supreme Court's ruling Thursday to uphold health care reform has widespread implications for both insured and uninsured consumers.

Beginning in 2014, uninsured individuals must buy coverage -- either on their own, through an employer's plan or through a health insurance exchange -- or else pay a tax penalty. Meanwhile, insured consumers will continue to enjoy key mandates of the law, such as free preventive care and coverage of adult dependents up to age 26, but at the expense of higher out-of -pocket costs.

In the United States, more than half of the population -- or 160 million people -- gets health insurance directly through their employers, while 50 million people have no insurance, according to the government. Tens of millions more consumers either buy their own private insurance or are covered by government programs, such as Medicaid and Medicare.

Several key mandates of health reform have already gone into effect since the law passed in 2010. Here's a rundown of those provisions and new mandates rolling out over the next two years that will impact almost all of these consumers.

If you have insurance through your employer: Employees will continue to enjoy key benefits mandated by health reform that have already gone into effect.

"For consumers who are insured through their employers, this is good news," said Mike Thompson, principal with PwC's Global Human Resources Services.

Among the main provisions: Employers must provide coverage for adult dependents of workers up to age 26; health plans must cover certain preventive services, such as mammograms and colonoscopies, without charging a deductible, co-pay or coinsurance; and insurers can't impose a maximum lifetime dollar limit on a customer's medical care.

In 2013, eight additional preventive care services for women, including HIV and HPV (Human Papillomavirus) screening, will be covered under health reform.

Related: Justices say insurance mandate is a tax

But some industry experts also said that employers who offer insurance will now be even more focused on controlling their health care costs, especially since the individual mandate is expected to add more people -- including more high-risk individuals -- to their plans.

ARAMARK Expands Access to Nutrition and Wellness Programs For Lowell's Underserved Families

Posted: June 28, 2012 at 5:11 pm

LOWELL, Mass., June 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --It's been more than two years since children at CTI's James Houlares Early Learning Center have been able to enjoy their playground, which includes an old wooden structure that is no longer safe. Yet more than a third of the children enrolled in CTI's early learning programs are overweight, and in need of access to safe recreational areas where they can increase their physical activity.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110907/PH63208LOGO )

Today more than 100 volunteers from ARAMARK, the global professional services company, will celebrate their partnership with Community Teamwork, Inc. and establish an ARAMARK Building Community (ABC) Opportunity Zone at the Early Learning Center, which will be a hub of ongoing nutrition and wellness education and programs for the community. In addition, they will announce an educational campaign to address obesity and health challenges in Lowell, where more than 18 percent of the population is living below the poverty level and does not have access to adequate nutrition information and fresh, healthy food.

"Obesity and chronic disease are some of the major barriers to the health and prosperity of our community," said Karen Frederick, CTI Executive Director. "Our partnership with ARAMARK, and the nutrition expertise they will provide to our families is key to overcoming these barriers."

This effort is part of ARAMARK Building Community (ABC), the company's global volunteer and philanthropic program focused on strengthening local community centers and helping struggling families in 50 cities. Through ABC, employees use their culinary, hospitality, food and nutrition, facilities management and human resources talents to create strong and vital communities.

The ABC Opportunity Zone will include a completely refurbished outdoor recreation space for children. The underutilized space currently includes old playground equipment that will be removed and a new, safe play area will be installed. In addition, volunteers will expand the vegetable garden to provide more fresh vegetables for the community.

"ARAMARK employees are here today to demonstrate how deeply we care about the vitality of this community," said Frank Mendicino, ARAMARK President and Chief Strategy Officer. "Through ARAMARK Building Community, today and year-round, we are making a meaningful difference, whether it's a chef teaching a healthy cooking class, a human resources professional delivering a workshop on how to get a job, or a facilities expert creating a vibrant environment. We help people succeed, and build strong communities."

Volunteers will also install a permanent ABC Eat Smart Zone which will provide nutritious menus and nutrition education materials, and will also be for the center of ongoing cooking and nutrition education and awareness workshops. Throughout the year, ARAMARK culinary experts will participate in CTI's Cooking Matters program on the local cable television station, which teaches families how to eat healthy meals on a budget.

ARAMARK is the food service partner for the Lowell public schools, where the majority of children served by CTI are students. ARAMARK's relationship with CTI started a year ago when employees participated in a CTI fundraiser, and since then, volunteers have worked with CTI to identify ways to help address health and wellness issues in the community. Volunteers recently led a series of nutritional presentations for families living in motel rooms who were struggling to prepare nutritious meals with limited kitchen facilities, often only a microwave oven.

About Community Teamwork, Inc.Community Teamwork, Inc.'s mission is to assist low-income people in becoming self sufficient, to assist them with decisions that impact their lives, and to alleviate the effects of poverty. CTI is an advocate and catalyst for systemic change on issues that affect low-income families, such as education, workforce training, housing, economic development and civic engagement. CTI provides a range of services, including employment and job training, shelter for the homeless, child care, after-school programs, and other educational programs, at 12 locations that serve 42 communities in Middlesex and Essex counties.

Tour Report: Fitness: Strengthen to help coiling

Posted: at 5:11 pm

By Sean Cochran, Golf Fitness

Coiling can be described as the resistance created from the turning of the upper body to a greater degree than the lower body in the backswing. The coiling action creates an immense amount of elastic energy which can be translated into power during the downswing. This action is often referred to as the X-factor.

In order to create an X-factor a number of physical components are required. A stable lower body is needed. This creates the platform by which the upper body rotates. Mobility in the hips and flexibility in segments of the upper body are a requirement for the rotational components of the X-factor. Generally speaking the more stable the lower body and the greater flexibility in the upper body the more coiling the golfer can create.

Golf fitness training and exercises can assist in developing these physical components necessary for the coiling action of the golf swing. Dissecting the requirements of this action the development of lower body strength, hip mobility, and upper body flexibility will greatly enhance the ability to create an X-factor.

Looking at golf fitness exercises conducive to developing these physical components a Goblet Squat for the lower body strength/stability, Spiders to develop dynamic hip mobility, and Kneeling Club Rotations to focus on upper body flexibility could very much enhance the coiling action in the golf swing.

Golf Fitness Exercises:

Goblet Squat: (Lower body strength/stability) Grasp a dumbbell with both hands in front the chest. Rest the dumbbell in the palms of both hands, and elbows pointing down. Place the feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart, toes pointed outward at 45 degrees, and heels on the floor. Maintain an upright torso with the eyes looking forward, and arms extended straight.

Slowly lower the hips while keeping the torso upright by bending the knees. Continue to squat downward until the thighs are parallel to the floor. Pause for one second, return to the starting position of the exercise, and repeat for 8-15 repetitions.

Spiders: (Hip mobility) Position the body in a standard push-up position, back flat, hands shoulder width apart, and eyes looking down.

Begin by lifting your left foot and placing it outside the left hand. Slowly attempt to press your left forearm down towards the floor, keeping your left hand in place. Lower your forearm as low to the floor as possible, and hold for one second. Return to the starting position of the exercise and repeat with your right hand and foot. Perform 10-15 repetitions.
