USU on a mission for Weber nutrition

Posted: September 4, 2012 at 11:17 pm

By Thomas Alberts September 4, 2012.

Weber State Universitys Nontraditional Student Center is sponsoring a nutrition workshop on the Ogden and Davis campuses. The center is working with the Utah State University extension to teach a series of classes entitled Nutrition on a Mission.

We try to come up with certain workshops that will benefit students, said Cathy Barrow, the secretary for the Nontraditional Student Center. And we decided to do something more on the healthy side.

The classes will be held from Sept. 5 until Oct. 18. They will be taught on the Ogden campus in the Shepherd Union Building, Room 321, on Wednesdays from noon until 1 p.m. The Davis campus will also hold classes on Thursdays from 6-7 p.m.

Each class will include a cooking demonstration of various recipes, with samples of food being given after the classes. Lessons will focus on healthy eating, eating on a budget, how to make quick meals and ideas for snacks.

Students who enroll in the class will also be placed in a drawing to win a free cheese grater. At the end of the course, students will receive a certificate of completion from the workshop that can serve as a personal reminder of their accomplishment and the need to eat healthy at home. Students must attend every class in order toreceivethe certificate of completion.

The aim of the class is to help people learn to cook from scratch, eat healthy at home and save money while doing it. Normally, the workshops, which USU extension faculty teach, are taught to people within their own homes as part of the programs aim to encourage people to cook in their own homes as opposed to going out to eat. However, the classes will be taught on WSU campuses for the fall semester in partnership with the Nontraditional Student Center.

We teach in the Ogden area, said Lisa Morby, the instructor for the workshops. And students at Weber State University are our target audience of people we teach our program to.

Morby is an Expanded Food and NutritionEducationProgram nutrition education assistant working for the USU extension. The workshops are part of the EFNEP, which is sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture. The program aims to assist audiences across the country inutilizingthe resources available and changing behavior in order to facilitate healthy diets.

Thus far, 25-30 people have signed up for the classes, including the WSU womens basketball team, which has been encouraged by its coach to eat healthier.

Center for Productive Longevity Announces an Excellent Line-Up of Speakers for the Baby Boomers Entrepreneurship …

Posted: at 11:16 pm

BOULDER, CO--(Marketwire -09/04/12)- The Center for Productive Longevity (CPL), which serves as the bridge between people 55 and older and opportunities that enable them to continue in productive activities, has just increased its maximum number of participants from 125 to 150 because the topic has such fundamental importance, with unemployment high and economic growth low for the foreseeable future.

"New-business creation is the backbone of the U.S. economy, as well as the engine for increased employment and economic growth," said William Zinke, President of CPL.

The meeting at Babson College on September 14, titled "Spotlight on Entrepreneurship Opportunities for Baby Boomers," has an outstanding line-up of speakers:

There will be two breakout sessions focused on how to become an entrepreneur, with topics ranging from the risks and rewards to developing strategies for recognizing potential business opportunities to developing a business plan.

With 30 years added to longevity during the 20th century and the average age of retirement at 62, new-business creation is an important path to consider for older people who either want or need to continue working. It provides an opportunity for people with experience, expertise, seasoned judgment, proven performance and some accumulated wisdom to be their own boss and "march to their own drummer."

Additional meetings will be held at Northwestern University/Kellogg School of Management in Chicago on October 11, and the University of Denver-University College on November 15. One goal of these four meetings in different parts of the country is to contribute to the growing wave of entrepreneurship throughout the U.S. For more information on CPL and the senior entrepreneurship meetings, visit http://www.ctrpl.org or Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/CTRPL.

Dining services adds nutrition facts to daily menu

Posted: at 1:16 pm

Written by Alyssa Morlacci Monday, 03 September 2012 18:24

With nutrition facts now available for Dining Services daily menus a health initiative thats new this semester its easier than ever for campus diners to choose which food items to stock up on and which to leave behind.

Before classes began, Kent State executive chefs compiled nutrition facts for the menus that change daily at Eastway Cafe and Kent Market, and the facts are listed at those locations, said Dining Services director Richard Roldan. Nutrition facts for more locations and items that are served every day are available on the Dining Services website.

We talk about nutrition and people wanting to understand what they eat, Roldan said. So for us it was important that everything was out there and the information was available.

On average, students gain three to 10 pounds during their first two years of college, and most students gain that weight during their first semester, said nutrition outreach coordinator Tanya Falcone.

There is a misconception that eating healthy on campus is impossible, she said, but with the facts, students have more choices than they might realize.

1. Keep meals at a maximum of 500 calories and 15 grams of fat. This is based on the 2,000 calorie diet that plans for three meals and two smaller snacks.

2. Split meals that have larger amounts of calories and grams of fat with a friend or eat half and save the rest for later.

3. Look for items that are grilled instead of fried.

4. Eat healthy foods during a craving. For example, instead of eating three pieces of pizza, have one piece and a salad.

Parents Failing To Make Informed Decision About Right Nutrition For Children

By Wan Shahara Ahmad Ghazali

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- A child needs proper nutrition for a healthy and adequate development as well as strong physical growth.

A child's normal development and physical growth are crucial, particularly during infancy and up to the time he or she is around seven years old.

Hence, healthy nutrition is vital for a growing child and parents should ensure that they play an instrumental role in this aspect.

A recent study indicates that in the bid to ensure that their child gets all the essential nutrients, young mothers resort to using formula milk or growing up milk (GUM) for meeting the nutritional needs of their infants.

The Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM), in collaboration with Abbott Nutrition, carried out a recent study, which included 300 mothers who have children below three years of age.

The study shows that several factors influence a young mothers' choice of GUM.

The total investment and commitment by Asclepios towards the development of BLU8499 is at least US $4 million .

"We are very happy to be working with Asclepios Bioresearch to pursue the development of BLU8499 into a proof of concept study," said Roberto Bellini , President and Chief Executive Officer of BELLUS Health. "This collaboration allows us to use non-dilutive capital while retaining significant upside for our shareholders."

"Alzheimer's is a devastating disease that affects both patients and their families," said Simon Conder , Director of Asclepios. "We are excited to partner with the team at BELLUS Health to advance BLU8499 into a Phase IIa study and hope that this compound will make a difference in the lives of those affected by this condition."

The Phase IIa study is expected to be initiated in the second half of 2013. The trial will focus exclusively on Alzheimer's disease patients with an apoE4 positive genotype, which is the subgroup where the greatest level of treatment effect was seen in a previous Phase III study conducted with tramiprosate, the parent compound of BLU8499.

BELLUS Health will form a joint steering committee with Asclepios to oversee the program's development efforts. Under the terms of the agreement, BELLUS Health will earn study management fees equal to 15% of the capital invested by Asclepios over the life of the partnership. According to the agreement, it is expected that the two parties will share the overall proceeds from the future monetization of BLU8499 approximately equally.

About BLU8499 Formerly named NRM8499, BLU8499 is a prodrug of tramiprosate, a candidate for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. In January 2011 , BELLUS Health announced the results of the phase I clinical trial for BLU8499, which investigated the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic profile of BLU8499 as compared to tramiprosate in a group of 67 young and elderly healthy subjects. The phase I clinical trial data demonstrated that BLU8499 was safe and well tolerated at the intended therapeutic dose. Moreover, the gastrointestinal tolerability and pharmacokinetic profile of tramiprosate were meaningfully improved with BLU8499.

IDC Health Insights Releases IDC MarketScape on Social Media Analytics Vendors for Pharmaceutical Companies

Posted: at 1:15 pm

IDC Health Insights today released a new IDC MarketScape report that helps end users evaluate the leading social media analytics software and service vendors currently addressing the pharmaceutical industry. The comprehensive study, IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Pharmaceutical Social Media Analytics 2012 Vendor Assessment (Doc #HI236520), shows the increasing interest in these software applications and profiles the following nine vendors: Brandwatch, Cognizant, Genpact Social and Digital Transformation Services, Indegene, ListenLogic, Meltwater, Radian6, Semantelli, and Visible Technologies.

The IDC Health Insights research found that while spending on outbound social media marketing is lagging, investment in social media analytics software and services is growing rapidly and expected to increase significantly for the next several years. Pharmaceutical companies are seeking new ways to measure brand perception, keep tabs on end-consumer sentiment around products and therapeutic categories, and gain insight into competing brand strategy, pricing, promotions, and other relevant competitive information. As such, companies are looking for vendors with industry-specific expertise, strong customer references, and proven experience delivering measured value to pharmaceutical organizations.

"The pharmaceutical industry has been slow to embrace social media marketing, largely due to the lack of guidance currently available from the FDA. Uncertainty around proper procedure, coupled with potential liability related to tracking adverse events reported in social media settings, is keeping pharmas from utilizing this marketing channel as much as desired," said Eric Newmark, Program Director of IDC Health Insights. "Despite those challenges we have received an increasing number of client inquiries on social media analytics as pharmaceutical companies realize the potential impact social media channels can have on brand perception and marketing execution."

IDC MarketScape criteria selection, weightings, and vendor scores represent well-researched IDC judgment about the market and specific vendors. IDC analysts tailor the range of standard characteristics by which vendors are measured through structured discussions, surveys, and interviews with market leaders, participants and end users. Market weightings are based on user interviews, buyer surveys and the input of a review board of IDC experts in each market. IDC analysts base individual vendor scores, and ultimately vendor positions within the IDC MarketScape, on detailed surveys and interviews with the vendors, publicly available information and end-user experiences in an effort to provide an accurate and consistent assessment of each vendor's characteristics, behavior and capability.

Spread Thin Britain – Health Care Workers Increasingly Stretched

Posted: at 1:15 pm

LONDON, September 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

British health care professionals are working harder than they were one year ago according to research carried out by Randstad, the UK sector specialist recruiter.

In a survey of over 2,000 British employees[1], Randstad found that doctors, nurses and other health care professionals feel they are performing the job of 1.5 people meaning they are covering 50% more work than one person should be - the equivalent of two and a half additional work days every week. In contrast, British employees across all sectors feel they are performing the job of 1.3 employees - an additional day and a half.

While just over a quarter (27%) of those in health care and nursing jobs feel their workload is suitable for one person, nearly a third (33%) feel that in an ideal world their role would need one full time and one part-time member of staff. 28% believe their role needs two full-time people to manage the level of work and 4% feel their role really needs at least two full-time members of staff as well as an additional part-time person.

VickyShort, operationsdirectorof RandstadCare, said:"It's clear thatpublic austeritymeasures areexerting more and more pressure onlocal authorities and the NHSto keep their workforces as lean as possible.Healthcare professionals are facinggreater workloadsandreduced capacityasfundingrestraintsarecausing job cuts. While this will help manyemployersnavigate thesqueeze on funding,it isn't sustainable.

"Spreading the workforce too thin leads to burnout, mistakes and lower productivity in the long-run. It's vital that heavier work burdens for health care professionals do not lead to the erosion of the quality of service provision."

Workload taking its toll

The rise in workload is taking its toll on Britain's health care workforce. One in four workers (25%) feel more stressed now than they did six months ago, nearly half (49%) said it takes longer to switch off at the weekends than it did six months ago and one in ten (11%) are consistently sleeping badly because of work.

Holidays unable to ease pressure

Rising stress and work worries also mean that holidays are unable to provide suitable respite. 10% of health care respondents feel unable to take holiday this summer because of work pressure. And while one third (34%) of employees have been able to take two or more weeks off work for their main holiday this year, one in nine employees (11%) will be checking emails or calls, with a further 13% worrying about what is happening at work in their absence.

HHS takes steps toward protecting transgender people under health-care law

Posted: at 10:19 pm

In a recent letter hailed by advocates in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, the Department of Health and Human Services clarified that provisions in the Affordable Care Act prohibiting sex discrimination in health insurance apply to transgender people.

With HHS declaring that it would be discriminatory for employers, insurers and others to deny health insurance coverage or benefits based on gender identity or failure to conform to stereotypical notions of masculinity or femininity, advocates hope that transgender people those who identify with a sex other than the one they were born as will take another step toward achieving equality in health care.

This is a population thats very underserved and in need of a lot of health care, says M. Dru Lavasseur, a transgender rights attorney at Lambda Legal, an advocacy group based in New York. This HHS letter sends a message that we need to address its problems.

The HHS letter, issued by the departments Office of Civil Rights, adds to recent court decisions and a ruling by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in April that the Civil Rights Acts prohibition against sex discrimination applies to transgender people. The letter says the civil rights office is now accepting and investigating complaints of sex discrimination under the health- care law. If discrimination is found and an organization doesnt act voluntarily to resolve the problem, the office may move to halt federal financial assistance, among other actions.

The letter does not mean that insurers have to cover surgery related to gender transition, according to a statement posted online by HHS, which plans to issue further guidance on the subject.

Many major professional medical organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association, support treatment for gender identity disorder.

Although they are not required to do so, a growing number of employers provide health benefits that address the needs of transgender individuals. In addition to surgery to reconstruct the genitals, reduce or augment the chest or contour the face, transgender patients may need hormone therapy, mental health counseling and short-term leave, among other things.

For the past decade, the Human Rights Campaign, a Washington-based LGBT advocacy organization, has published an annual corporate equality index that scores large companies, including the Fortune 1000 companies and the countrys 200 top-grossing law firms on how equitably they treat their LGBT employees.

In 2012, the requirements to receive top marks got tougher. Companies have to provide equal health care for transgender employees, without any exclusions for medically necessary care, and the survey for the first time required coverage of gender reassignment surgery. Even with that stringent standard, the number of companies getting a perfect score for transgender-inclusive benefits grew from 85 in 2011 to 207 in 2012.

Getting a perfect score is important not only for the benefits it provides transgender employees but also because it sends a message to job applicants about the workplace environment.
