Alfred U. improving fitness center

Alfred University will acquire several new pieces of exercise equipment for its fitness center, including a lease of 10 treadmills, four elliptical machines and four adaptive motion trainers, to be installed at the Gibbs Fitness Center, located at the McLane Center. The equipment is being leased from Advantage Sports and Fitness Inc., of Ithaca, for three years and will be delivered and installed this week. The equipment will cost $30,000 per year to lease, and replaces items that are as old as 15 years. Last year, Alfred University spent $14,000 to repair and maintain equipment in the fitness center; maintenance and repair costs for the new equipment are covered under the lease terms. Advantage Sports and Fitness will take most of the old equipment as part of the lease agreement. When the new equipment is installed, the fitness center will have six elliptical machines, 10 treadmills and four adaptive motion trainers. The adaptive motion trainers will have flat screen television monitors mounted on the equipment; wireless receivers controlling a bank of televisions will be included with the new treadmills. The fitness center is available for use by students, faculty and staff of the University as well as members of the surrounding community. Each month, while school is in session, thousands make use of the equipment at the fitness center. For the 13-month period from September 2011 to September 2012, there were 23,271 visitors to the fitness center. Despite usage typically dropping during the summer months, the fitness center still had averaged nearly 1,800 visitors per month since the beginning of the 2011-12 academic year. Kathy Woughter, vice president of Student Affairs at Alfred University, pointed to those numbers in discussing the need for acquiring the new equipment. Every year, thousands of students, faculty, staff and community members use the fitness center, said Woughter. The machines have been put to hard use and have served us well, but theyre showing their age. New and updated equipment will mean fewer breakdowns, quicker repairs, less wait time, and assurance that state-of-the-art equipment will arrive each year to take the place of older machines. Alfred University has made it a priority to pursue initiatives aimed at promoting physical fitness and wellness. Ground was broken this summer on the McLane Center Annex, a 33,000 square foot facility that, when completed in September 2014, will include an indoor track, an all-purpose court, two locker rooms with restroom facilities. A support wing located on the west end of the annex will house a multi-purpose room for community-oriented activities like yoga, Zoomba and martial arts, along with an office and some room for storage. Our wellness philosophy is multidimensional one that incorporates a holistic and education-based vision of mental and physical wellbeing, Woughter said. Studies show over and over that if students are physically fit and well, they will perform better in the classroom. Any initiative that supports that fits in with AUs efforts to graduate not just academically qualified, but also holistically healthy and well students. Because the equipment is being acquired on a three-year lease, there will be a guarantee that every student, during his or her time at AU, will be able to use brand new fitness center equipment. Thats a solid selling point to offer to prospective students, and not just prospective student-athletes. The fitness center is a stop on the tours not just for varsity athletes but for all students, Woughter said. We all know that its not just varsity athletes who work out in the fitness center. In fact, Id even say that recreational athletes will be more positively impacted by this new program than our varsity athletes, since often the fitness center is their primary venue for working out.

Roy: No concerns on Carroll fitness

Posted: at 5:19 pm

England boss Roy Hodgson has no worries about the fitness of striker Andy Carroll.

The West Ham forward has only just returned from a hamstring injury but such is the high regard Hodgson has for the 23-year-old, he has named him in his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland on the back of that single substitutes' appearance at QPR on Monday.

"Andy played 23 minutes including injury-time on Monday and I am expecting him to play more minutes on Saturday against Arsenal, either from the start or coming on," said Hodgson. "He has another week after that so I don't think there is any reason for me to question his fitness."

Whereas Carroll is returning to the England fold, Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster is included for the first time.

The rare - in recent times - example of someone based in the Scottish Premier League being selected for the Three Lions is overshadowed by the introductions of Arsenal full-back Kieran Gibbs and Stoke's Ryan Shawcross and a recall for Aaron Lennon, plus a promise that Arsenal's Carl Jenkinson is being looked at very closely.

Gibbs already has two caps from Wembley friendlies against Hungary and France in 2010. Shawcross received his only previous call-up from Fabio Capello a couple of months before, but was never picked again by the Italian.

Hodgson said: "Jenkinson was a player we thought a lot about but decided we didn't have quite that many places. He is certainly a player we will think about for the future. Gibbs, Lennon and Shawcross are players we need to see at closer hand.

"There has to be some sort of rejuvenation process with the England team when a new coach comes in. I am very much aware that Brazil is two years down the road if we are good enough to get there. And in two years maybe these lads will be real stars in the Premier League."

Hodgson has retained a core of experience though. With Steven Gerrard suspended, Frank Lampard seems certain to skipper England against San Marino next Friday, and there are plenty of others Hodgson feels are capable of shouldering the burden of responsibility.

"We have enough leaders," he said. "Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are the captain and vice-captain. One can only hope there will be one or two who at the moment are in the early stages of their careers, who will emerge and show the same leadership qualities as John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard."

Regence and Healthways Partner to Offer SilverSneakers® Fitness Program to Regence Medicare Advantage PPO Plans …

Regence is partnering with well-being improvement leader Healthways (HWAY), to offer the SilverSneakers Fitness Program to its Regence Medicare Advantage PPO members. SilverSneakers is the nations leading exercise program designed to keep older adults active and healthy. The three-year partnership will provide the program to more than 100,000 members in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Utah through 2015. Regence Medicare Advantage PPO members can join the award-winning program at no additional cost.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, physical activity is essential to healthy aging. Further information from the CDC states that exercise not only helps strengthen muscles in older adults, but it can also prevent many of the health problems that seem to come with aging. Using proven methodologies based upon more than 16 years of science and outcomes, the SilverSneakers Fitness Program increases physical activity in older adults, resulting in higher well-being and lower health care costs.

While regular exercise is a crucial part of healthy living for people of all ages, it is particularly effective in preventing or managing chronic diseases for older adults, said Ben R. Leedle, Jr., Healthways president and chief executive officer. We look forward to partnering with Regence to provide this time-tested program to their Medicare Advantage PPO members in the Northwest and Intermountain states.

The SilverSneakers Fitness Program engages participants in active behavior change through access to a variety of physical activity venues and programming specifically for older adults that incorporates physical fitness and social experiences. The Healthways fitness center network offers convenient access to more than 15,000 participating fitness and wellness facilities nationwide. In addition to the national network, Regence members have access to more than 500 fitness and wellness facilities across their four-state service area.

Regence is committed to improving the health of our members at any age or fitness level. Our experience with wellness programs has shown that a more physically active lifestyle can make a measurable difference in our members overall health and well-being. We believe our Medicare Advantage members will enjoy the benefits of SilverSneakers friends and fun model and most importantly, they will reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle, said Lisa Brubaker, senior vice president of Government Programs for Regence.

Peak Health Solutions Acquires Health Data Essentials

Posted: at 5:19 pm

Peak Health Solutions, a leading provider of end-to-end health information management services to health plans and healthcare facilities, today announced its acquisition of the assets of Health Data Essentials (HDE).

The move enables Peak to offer advanced analytics and services built around risk adjustment, quality improvement, utilization measurement, STARS quality measurement and HEDIS. The combined entity allows customers to organize and access integrated quality and risk adjustment data to make it meaningful and actionable. Coupled with business process improvements and available consulting services, payers will be able to use the data to positively impact overall performance.

Founded in 2004, Peak offers full-service retrospective and prospective risk-adjustment coding services to healthcare providers and Medicare Advantage (MA) plans. Expertise contributed by HDE, along with their flagship product EssentialStars, will further assist MA plans in obtaining accurate payments from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) State Medicaid programs, and in meeting criteria for quality bonuses defined in the Affordable Care Act of 2010.

Peak, backed by Atlanta-based private equity firm EDG Partners, anticipates aggressive product development in upcoming months to extend their services to Medicaid managed care organizations, issuers operating in state-based Exchanges, and to commercial healthcare payer markets. Exchanges in particular will benefit greatly from the Peak consultants as they navigate new financial, quality reporting, and regulatory challenges.

The healthcare landscape is changing dramatically and these changes have a significant impact on the revenue stream, notes Steve Roberts, president and CEO of Peak Health Solutions. The risk adjustment and quality reporting services we offer health plans can help to strengthen both the bottom line and overall performance.

The Peak platform captures a wealth of information via medical record reviews and in-home patient assessments, enabling compliance with a wide range of quality ratings such as STARS and HEDIS measures. This information and the analytics that result from it, combined with advanced technology, will allow Peak to support both care coordination efforts and provider engagement activities.

Joining our analytic proficiencies and consulting capabilities with Peaks services creates a valuable resource for the healthcare community, says Richard Lieberman, CEO of HDE. The services and strengths of the two companies are complementary, and will allow us to extend the benefits each would be able to offer the market.

HDE is an exceptional strategic addition for Peak as both payers and providers recognize the need to deploy advanced data analytic tools to meet the increasing requirements to proficiently manage and report quality and care management initiatives. Both Peak and HDE are fortunate to have partnered with EDG which has proven itself as an insightful private equity firm with a rich history of guiding and building industry-leading healthcare companies, states Keith Devantier of Falcon Capital Partners, who represented both Peak (in its prior transaction with EDG) and HDE.

This acquisition represents an exciting opportunity, Roberts adds. Were bringing people, information and technology together in a way that will effectively meet existing and emerging demands of the market.

Health insurer Highmark asks court to block West Penn deal talks

Posted: at 5:19 pm

(Reuters) - Health insurer Highmark Inc wants a state court to block any possible deal talks with rivals involving Pennsylvania's West Penn Allegheny Health System, which last week ended a planned $475 million alliance with Highmark.

One of the 10 largest U.S. health insurers, with 4.9 million people on its rolls, Highmark said in a news release on Tuesday that it had asked a Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas for a temporary restraining order to keep West Penn from pursuing affiliation or acquisition talks with third parties.

Pittsburgh-based Highmark, which is readying for major shifts in healthcare funding under U.S. reforms by assembling an integrated health-delivery network, and West Penn struck an affiliation agreement last November.

In ending the planned alliance, non-profit West Penn said Highmark had not lived up to the terms of the affiliation agreement and had insisted that financially strapped West Penn restructure its debt through bankruptcy.

The lawsuit also asks that West Penn immediately repay $200 million in grants and loans provided by Highmark.

A spokesman for Highmark was not immediately available to comment. The company has denied violating the terms of its affiliation and described a possible financial restructuring as just one potential route for improving West Penn's finances.

Last Friday, after West Penn announced the termination of the alliance, Moody's Investors Service and Fitch Ratings warned they may cut credit ratings on West Penn, a regional operator of five hospitals and other healthcare and research facilities.

Moody's placed its Caa1 bond rating for West Penn on review for a downgrade. Fitch also put the system's B-plus rating on rating watch negative. About $737 million in outstanding revenue bond debt issued by the Allegheny County Hospital Development Authority in 2007 is affected by the actions.

Scholar on aging argues people can now live to 1,000

Posted: at 5:18 pm

Some people alive today will live to be at least 1,000 years old, according to Aubrey de Grey, a leading scholar in the study of anti-aging methods. In a lecture Wednesday, de Grey presented research-based support and an ethics-based argument for a near future in which aging no longer exists and people live forever.

The seminar, called The Science and Ethics of Eliminating Aging, was sponsored by the Universitys Center for Human Values and chaired by bioethics professor Peter Singer. De Grey presented his research on anti-aging therapy, promoted his vision for a world in which humans do not experience the negative effects of aging and evaluated the benefits of and objections to this future society.

De Grey is currently the chief science officer of the Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence Foundation, a non-profit devoted to anti-aging research that he founded, and editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed journal Rejuvenation Research.

In an interview before the seminar, de Grey said he hoped to use the lecture to educate people that the defeat of aging is both feasible and desirable.

De Grey began his presentation by defining aging. He said his foundation does research on ways to limit damages done to the human body by natural metabolic processes and that he hopes the research will allow them to identify a physical state in which one could perpetually look and feel and function like a young adult.

There are seven specific types of damage aging does to the body, de Grey noted. Although solutions to these have not been reached, he described a scientific breakthrough his group achieved several months ago; a study they had performed showed increased viability of cells in a culture, which he said could have implications for stopping the damage that causes cardiovascular disease.

De Grey then described the feasibility and societal benefits of successful development of anti-aging technology. He said his research suggests a 50-50 chance of developing these therapies within the next 25 years to a level of sophistication that will confer ... robust human rejuvenation.

On a slide comparing two pictures, de Grey simply summarized his views on the positives and negatives of anti-aging: one of young people at play labeled Fun and another of a sickly senior citizen labeled Not Fun. Therefore, he argued that everyone from biologists to journalists to ordinary citizens practicing advocacy should work to achieve successful anti-aging solutions.

Finally, de Grey suggested that a society in which people live indefinite life spans would have a higher quality of life. He noted that critics argue that indefinite life spans would lead to overpopulation and that living forever might not be desirable. However, those are not reasons to halt research into anti-aging solutions and those are ethical questions best decided by future generations, he said.

Even if we did have a problem [arising from anti-aging development] and humanity had a choice to make ... thats a choice humanity of the future is entitled to make for itself rather than having that choice imposed on it by our not choosing to develop these therapies, de Grey said.

Australian healthcare company Rapid Nutrition to invest $20 mn in India

Posted: at 6:15 pm

New Delhi, Oct 3 (IANS) Australia's Rapid Nutrition, one of the world's largest natural healthcare companies, is to invest $20 million in India for rolling out its globally successful scientific and holistic weight loss programme Leisa's Secret and also setting up a manufacturing facility in this country.

"Rapid Nutrition brings out India's only scientific weight loss programme built around 12 years of extensive research in Australia. It is Rapid Nutrition's serious objective to deliver sustainable results to consumers and demonstrate it by commitment," said Simon St Ledger, Rapid Nutrition's founder and chairman, at a news conference here.

"This is coupled with cutting-edge technology and endorsement from medical professionals."

Rapid Nutrition will initially invest $10.6 million by March 31. It plans to set up a manufacturing facility in Hyderabad and also acquire a healthcare marketing firm in India soon, St Ledger said.

The roll out of Leisa's Secret aims to cover south India first, followed by west, north and later east and central India.

"Leisa's Secret weight loss programme offers the combined benefit of four products which will be supplied directly to the customer. The individual is entitled to nutritional support by a team of qualified nutritionist and motivational support to be provided by trained para-medical team to improve compliance," a company statement said.

"We wish to grab 50 percent of our business through type 2 and smaller cities so that this programme reaches a larger base. We would do this by continuous empanelment of doctors and nutritionists in our programme across the country. We are starting with metro cities, but soon we will be there across the nation," said St Ledger.

In the pipeline are premium weight-loss snacks to address the between-meal snacking pattern among Indians.

India is reeling under a huge nutrition debt as nearly 570 million consume sufficient or excess calories but lack adequate intake of nutrients. In fact, 60 percent of this section consumes higher than normal calories, with a disproportionately high fat intake making hypertension and diabetes as the India's crowning glory.

"Middle-aged housewives and working women are the target for many debilitating lifestyle disorders. Current weight loss patterns are not sustainable, resulting into yo-yoing of weight. With growing awareness, people display a prophylactic intent rather than curative. Leisa's Secret caters to this growing need with scientifically proven holistic weight loss programme," said Amit Srivastava, CEO, India and APAC, Rapid Nutrition.

Best Fitness Trends to Try

Posted: at 6:14 pm

Trying something new keeps you motivated to exercise. But which current fitness craze is worth your time, money, and energy? Real Simple asked health experts to weigh in.

TRX Suspension TrainerThe trend, explained: This piece of workout equipment was developed by a Navy SEAL as a way to stay fit in the field. The TRX, made up of nylon straps and handles, anchors over a door or some other stationary object and adjusts to different heights so you can do head-to-toe movespush-ups, lunges, pull-upsusing your body weight. The equipment costs about $200 (trxtraining.com) and comes with how-to DVDs. Fans say that the TRX engages more muscles than the same moves performed on solid ground.

Expert opinion: The main benefit of using the TRX is that it forces you to use your core to stabilize yourself, says Scarsdale, N.Y.based exercise physiologist Brad Schoenfeld, the author of Women's Home Workout Bible. For example, to do a plank pose on the ground, you only have to keep your body straight and lifted, using your abdominals for support. For a plank pose with the TRX, in which your ankles are held up by the nylon straps, you need to engage your chest, back, shoulders, and abdominals to ensure that you dont fall over.

The TRX is also convenient, because you can rig it up at home and adjust your positioning to increase or decrease the difficulty level, says Schoenfeld.

The bottom line: The TRX is worth it for almost anyone, especially for people who want a challenging way to exercise different muscle groups but may not want to sign up for a gym membership. _______________________________________________

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)The trend, explained: HIIT turns a regular cardio workout into a super-efficient one: You alternate between 20- to 30-second bursts of all-out effort and easier recovery periods. HIIT works with any cardio activity, including walking, running outdoors, and using the elliptical or stair-climber. The approach is said to strengthen the heart, the lungs, and large muscles, and devotees love it because of its purported fat-burning abilities. Plus, HIIT workouts are short20 to 30 minutes on average. To try it: Start with a slow five-minute warm-up, then increase your pace (or resistance or incline) until youre breathing heavily. Keep going for 30 seconds, then drop your pace, resistance, or incline down for two to four minutes; repeat three to four times. Because of the intensity, most experts recommend HIIT a maximum of three times a week.

Evive Health COO Addresses HERO Annual Meeting on Ways to Increase Engagement in Health and Wellness Programs

Posted: at 6:14 pm

Prashant Srivastava, chief operating officer of Evive Health, was one of the featured speakers at this years Health Enhancement Research Organizations (HERO) annual meeting, October 2 4, in Minnesota. Evive Health is one of the nations leading innovators of technology solutions that provides individuals with personalized health and wellness tools that improve their health decision making.

Joining Srivastava in the presentation was Lisa Shu, visiting assistant professor of management and organization at The Kellogg School of Management. Shus teaching and research focuses primarily on ethical decision making over the long term in order to identify moral nudges that can be effective across cultural settings. Together, Srivastava and Shu discussed how personalized messaging can be the key to increasing employee engagement in preventative health and wellness programs.

More and more employers across the country are recognizing that offering employee health and wellness programs isnt enough if their employees dont participate due to real or perceived barriers, said Srivastava. Through our presentation we shared with attendees some insights into the newest engagement tools that make it easier for individuals to take action and which have been proven to greatly enhance participation and results.

Unhealthy workers are collectively costing corporate America more than $153 billion in lost productivity annually. Attendees at the Evive presentation learned the secrets to dramatically increasing member/employee participation in health and wellness programs, including understanding the barriers to participation and how to effectively overcome them.

They also discovered the road-tested techniques that diverse industries have successfully used to increase direct response to their communications and how those same practices can be applied to enhance engagement in health and wellness programs.

The key is personalized messaging, Srivastava told the attendees. By getting away from simply sending generic messages and by smartly nudging people in the right way and through the right interactive tools we have seen response rates 3-5 times that of traditional healthcare communications. In fact, in the first year alone, our communications techniques have raised member adherence an average of 21 percent.

Evive Health has been part of the HERO think tank, which brings together a select group of executives from around the country to exchange ideas, expertise and recommendations in order to solve problems and react to opportunities concerning employee health management national policy and strategy.

Founded in 2007, Evive Health is the leading innovator in designing personalized communication tools that motivate individuals to engage in health and wellness enhancement activities that improve their health, lower healthcare costs, and lead to a happier and healthier lifestyle. Earlier this year Evive was recognized with an award of excellence at the 11thAnnual Patient Adherence Forum in Philadelphia. Evive was also presented with a Gold Aster Award for the direct mail program it created on behalf of the state of Nebraska to educate its employees on their cost-savings Wellness Health Plan options and other health and wellness decisions.

Kenya: Doctors strike over poor health care

Posted: at 6:14 pm

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) Doctors in Kenya's public hospitals on Wednesday spent their 17th day on strike to protest the dilapidated state of public health care. Emergency rooms in some of Kenya's public hospitals frequently don't have gloves or medicine, and power outages sometimes force doctors to use the light from their phones to complete a procedure.

Kenya's government fired 1,000 of the 2,000 striking doctors last week despite a shortfall of skilled medical practitioners. The government had promised to implement reforms in health care last year after doctors walked off the job and held protests.

At least two patients have died due to lack of treatment since the strike started, union officials say, but the government claims health facilities are coping well without the striking workers.

Attempts to hold talks this week with officials from the Ministry for Medical Services failed, prompting the doctors to flood social media with tell-all stories about deplorable conditions in public hospitals.

"Tuberculosis patients meant to be isolated yet they are sharing beds in the corridors meant for walking which have been converted to wards," Dr. Stanely Aruyaru said in a Twitter posting.

"It is a pity for someone to survive an accident but die in hospital because there is no blood, no Intensive Care Unit, no cervical collar, no splints and now no doctor," said Dr. Allan Kochi from the Nyeri provincial hospital in the Central Kenya. Dr. Nelly Bosire, the union representative, confirmed that the postings were authentic.

Dr. Fredrick Oluga, told The Associated Press how in mid-August he was called in to help remove the placenta from a woman that was stuck after she had just given birth. Oluga said that that when he arrived there was no electricity at the Vihiga district hospital in western Kenya and the standby generator did not have fuel. And the hospital did not have gynecological gloves for the procedure, he said.

"The patient was bleeding profusely and I had to act quickly so the nurse pointed light from her phone for me to conduct the procedure," Oluga said. He said twice this year he had to use light from a mobile phone and that such incidents are fairly common across the country.

Health care has been in a deplorable state in Kenya for a long time, but the country's poor and many in Kenya think the state of health care is the norm, said Bosire, the Nairobi branch chairwoman of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacist and Dentist Union.

Bosire said middle class and rich Kenyans do not realize the problems in public health facilities until they are forced to seek treatment there when treatment in private hospitals becomes too expensive. Public hospitals charge far less than private hospitals, where politicians and top government officials seek treatment, Bosire said.
