Streamline Health® Announces Release of Collabra™ Software Suite by Its Meta Division

Posted: at 11:20 am

CHICAGO, Oct. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Streamline Health Solutions, Inc. (STRM), announced at the 84th AHIMA Convention in Chicago, Illinois, on Sunday, September 30, 2012, the introduction of Collabra, a new solution from its Meta Health Technology division. Collabra is an integrated web-based software suite that enhances the productivity of hospital clinical documentation improvement (CDI) and coding staff and enables them to seamlessly share patient data.

Integrates Four Powerful ApplicationsCollabra combines the industry's leading CDI and coding applications into a single, integrated solution suite:

Facilitates Sharing of Critical Data The Collabra solution suite was developed to address a critical communication challenge in healthcare facilities: the inability of CDI and coding staff to share data. Coders are often unaware of the work their CDI colleagues have already completed on a chart. If a facility does not include physician queries as part of the permanent patient record, coders may find themselves duplicating CDI queries. At the same time, CDI specialists typically have no way to know the final outcome on their cases, and are therefore unable to assess the impact of their documentation improvement efforts.

Collabra resolves these issues by enabling CDI specialists and coders to work together, utilizing a shared database. Now, coders can easily access concurrent query information while CDI specialists can see the final coding on a case and compare it to the concurrent documentation improvement efforts.

Enhances Productivity and ICD-10-ReadinessWith the approaching transition to ICD-10, the Collabra suite enters the market at a particularly opportune time. "At its most basic, the transition to ICD-10 presents a staggering increase in billing codes," said Bob Watson, President and CEO of Streamline Health. "With the addition of Collabra to our robust line of health information technology solutions, we are well-positioned to assist our provider clients with this challenge."

According to Barbara Hinkle-Azzara, RHIA, Vice President and General Manager of Streamline Health's Meta division, "Collabra is a significant new resource for healthcare facilities facing an ever-increasing array of challenges. With its shared database and powerful reporting capability, Collabra enables hospitals to easily coordinate CDI initiatives with the HIM function. In addition, the integrated computer-assisted coding solution provides an immediate boost to CDI and coding staff productivity, and enables facilities to prepare for the 2014 implementation of ICD-10."

OPKO Health Announces Launch of 4Kscore™ in Europe

Posted: at 11:20 am

OPKO Health, Inc. (NYSE:OPK) today announced strategic partner, International Health Technology (IHT) headquartered in Cambridge, UK, launched the OPKO 4Kscore in Europe as part of IHTs ProstateCheck program being offered as an early detection service.

Earlier this year, OPKO executed a sublicensing deal with IHT to commercialize OPKOs novel panel of kallikrein biomarkers and associated algorithm (4Kscore) for the early detection of prostate cancer in a laboratory setting in the UK, Ireland, Sweden and Denmark. The OPKO panel represents the culmination of a decade of research by scientists in Europe and the U.S. and has been demonstrated in over 10,000 patients to predict the probability of cancer-positive biopsies in men suspected of having prostate cancer. Extensive studies have shown that the use of the panel could eliminate a significant number of unnecessary prostate biopsies, a possible reduction of over 50%, along with a high frequency of associated pain, bleeding and infection, sometimes requiring hospitalization. With this significant reduction in biopsy rate, the probability of delaying diagnosis of a high grade cancer is only 0.6% (and this small population of men would be followed with active surveillance).

IHT, through close cooperation with some of the largest private hospitals chains in the UK and abroad, has access to world class private facilities and specialists to provide testing services for corporate clients in the private sector.

ProstateCheck has been very well received amongst our corporate customers and we have already signed up the first customers, said Troels Jordansen, Chairman of International Health Technology. The opportunity to identify high grade prostate cancers and focus clinical interventions on these is of great value to men but also to the health care sectors in general. We have very high expectations for this unique service.

The collaborative efforts with IHT have progressed at an impressive rate, said Phillip Frost, M.D., Chairman and CEO of OPKO Health. As part of IHTs ProstateCheck initiative, the 4Kscore will provide clinicians with a differentiated critical component in their overall diagnosis of prostate cancer, while providing patients with better and more efficient healthcare.

About International Health Technology, Ltd.

IHT specializes in launching new diagnostic technology in the private sector as part of a clinical service and as a distribution partner. IHT mainly focuses on the UK market, but is expanding within the European Union and U.S.

New study highlights the role of testosterone in longevity

Posted: at 11:18 am

In the industrialized world, women live at least five years longer, on average, than men. Scientists have attributed that difference to everything from healthier habits to hardier cells. Now, a study that analyzes the longevity of eunuchs, or castrated men, suggests that testosterone may play a part in shortening mens lives.

The idea that testosterone, the male sex hormone, affects life span isnt new. Neutered dogs and other animals that have had their sources of testosterone removed often live longer than their intact counterparts. But studies on the connection between castration and longevity in humans are harder to come by, and the results have been inconclusive. A 1969 study of institutionalized patients in Kansas found that castrated men lived an average of 14 years longer than other men in the same facility, but a 1993 study of Italian castrati (singers castrated as boys to preserve their high voices) found nothing unusual about their longevity.

Almost five years ago, biologist Kyung-Jin Min of Inha University in Inchon, South Korea, found himself considering this lack of data while watching a TV drama about eunuchs. Min began to wonder if Koreas rich historical records could shed light on the link between castration and longevity in humans.

Until the late 19th century, Korean rulers employed eunuchs to serve the royal court. These eunuchs were allowed to marry and adopt castrated boys as their sons. The Yang-Se-Gye-Bo, a genealogical record of the eunuch families, has survived, and it documents the birth and death dates and other personal details of 385 eunuchs who lived between the mid-16th century and the mid-19th century.

Min and colleagues from the National Institute of Korean History and Korea University began to pore over the Yang-Se-Gye-Bo. After painstakingly comparing it with other historical records, the team was able to identify and verify life spans for 81 of the listed eunuchs. To rule out the effects of cushy conditions on longevity, they compared the eunuchs life spans to those of uncastrated men of similar social status living at the same time. The eunuchs outlived their uncastrated contemporaries by 14 to 19 years, the researchers report online in the journal Current Biology.

The eunuch group also boasted three centenarians among the 81 verified life spans, an unusual number considering that the current incidence of centenarians is just one in 3,500 in Japan and one in 4,400 in the United States.

I thought there were errors in our data and checked everything again, Min says. I was quite surprised by the big difference in longevity and the number of centenarians.

The study doesnt directly explain why the eunuchs lived so much longer, but it provides the strongest evidence yet that testosterone the key difference between the eunuchs and their peers in this study and a proxy for the difference between women and men plays a role, says Steven Austad, a biogerontologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, who was not involved in Mins study.

This is the most thorough, well-controlled study of its kind, Austad says. The sex difference in aging and longevity is an almost unexplored area, and this study highlights that testosterone is part of the issue.

Identifying all the factors that contribute to the difference in longevity between men and women may help researchers find ways to temper their effects, Austad says. That, in turn, could help men live longer without losing any body parts in the process.

Marine D3 Review Publishes Its Newest Product Review, Recommending the Anti-aging Supplement, Marine D3

Posted: at 11:18 am

Marine D3 Review is dedicated to providing professional product reviews and guidance, as well as offers insight into anti-aging and how to reduce it effects on the body.

Houston, TX. (PRWEB) October 02, 2012

According to Marine D3 Review, the supplement slows the breakdown of cells in the body thats a normal part of the aging process. Taken long enough, Marine D3 actually can help repair cells and reduce the affects of aging.

In addition, the supplement has been known to help control other problems associated with aging including achy joints, vision problems, cholesterol elevation, weight gain and lack of energy. By beginning the Marine D3, much of this can be reversed if you continue taking the product.

The bottom line of what we found in our extensive research of Marine D3 is that it is a superior anti-aging product that is capable of doing several different jobs to slow down and repair natural aging processes, Marine D3 Review stated. The ingredients are solid and it appears the company adheres to high-quality standards so that each batch and bottle sold has the same potency.

We also liked the fact that the product goes over and beyond what most anti-aging products do since it also helps with energy levels, lowers cholesterol and even can help reduce fat if you are trying to lose weight.

In addition, Marine D3 contains Omega-3, which reduces inflammation in the body. Omega-3 is a powerful tool that can be used to combat osteoarthritis and others forms of inflammation.

Marine D3 is superior to synthetic D3 because it contains two main substances not found in the vitamin, states Marine D3 Review. The first is that the seaweed contained is extracted from ecklonia cava, which is a super powerful antioxidant that is unlike any land type of antioxidant and is reported to be 100 times more potent than anything currently found in the market. Ecklonia cava is also FDA approved.

The second ingredient is an Omega-3 fatty acid that contains up to 85 percent more DHA than other forms of fish oils. This type of DHA and its effectiveness is the key in making the Marine D3 actually work.

As such, according to Marine D3 Review, Marine D3 is a powerful combination of ingredients that work together to appear to make it the powerful anti-aging supplement that it is, which goes beyond creams or other such products.

Nutrition North program in full effect

Posted: October 1, 2012 at 7:13 pm

The Nutrition North Canada program comes into full effect today.

The program was rolled out slowly to make for a smooth transition from the old food mail program.

As of today, many non-perishable items like canned soups, canned vegetables and dry rice and pasta are no longer subsidized.

Retailers have been preparing for today's deadline for months, so prices won't jump instantly.

The North West Company owns and operates many grocery stores in Nunavut and the N.W.T. It has already secured an extra two months' supply of those non-perishables by sealift to Nunavut.

Michael McMullen, the companys vice president of northern retail, said the company has also cut down on the number of brands it carries to make room for the larger sealift order instead of building a new warehouse.

We would rather be more efficient with the resources we have available than invest money needlessly and be in a position of having to pass on those costs of construction to the customer, said McMullen.

McMullen said if prices do increase, it wouldn't be until late spring or early summer.

"It's not October 1 so much that we worry about. It's more as the sealift supply dwindles, it's more did we gauge the customer demand correctly."

Shoppers will have to wait until mid-2013 to see any potential impact on prices.

Joey Gloor will be visiting campus from Tuesday, Oct. 2 through Thursday, Oct. 4, to host a series of events ranging from lunch and dinners in residence halls to interactive lifting sessions, lectures and classes.

I Used to Be Fat is a reality series that follows the journey of overweight teens who are given a personal trainer and strive to meet their fitness goals through diet and exercise.

On I Used to Be Fat, Gloor worked with college-aged clients in order to transform their lives before starting school, said Gloors assistant Jessica Mueller, who is organizing the events. She also noted that Western is the first institution to have him on a college-type tour. His goal is to motivate and inform students about the different aspects of a healthy lifestyle including exercise and healthy eating.

There will be something for everyone, on every level of fitness, Mueller added.

Several departments, including Inter-Hall Council, Sodexo, Chi Omega, the University Union Board and the Council on Student Activities have been working with Gloor and his assistants for six months to put these

programs together.

The committee wanted to coordinate a program that brought in different departments, Mueller said. We think the programs will benefit any type of student.

"We're filling a gap because we have some of our clients who are travelling to southern California where a similar facility is. It costs a lot of money," said Toby Redfern, a program manager.

The training is aimed at reactivating muscles and nerves affected by spinal cord injuries and to improve people's breathing and keep them healthier.

Fitness coordinator Kelly Nitchie said the changes he's seen in the first eight weeks of the program are remarkable. "It's exciting to watch it."

Participant Stewart Midwinter broke his neck in a paragliding accident last August. His government funded therapy ran out in December.

"It's hard not to take it personally and feel that the system has just decided you're not going to get any better and that you're basically trapped in the body in this situation forever."

For two hours, three times a week, Midwinter works out in a specially designed gym doing aggressive repetitive exercises. Six weeks ago, Midwinter couldn't sit on a mat unsupported, but now he can.

"Having this program has been a reason to get up in the morning," he said. "My goal is just to be able to sit on the grass in the park, park my chair out of the way and not have anybody be able to see I'm different than everybody else."

All Northern Colorado Hospitals Now Connected To CORHIO Health Information Exchange

Posted: at 7:12 pm

DENVER, Oct. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --CORHIO, the Colorado Regional Health Information Organization, announced today that all six northern Colorado hospitals are connected to the health information exchange (HIE). By connecting to CORHIO's secure network, hospitals in the region operated by University of Colorado Health (UCHealth) and Banner Health are electronically sharing vital patient information with community-based providers across the region and the state.

Health care providers that connect to the HIE help their patients obtain higher quality patient care with less hassle by communicating clinical information and test results faster and more accurately between offices and appointments. Better communication between providers improves care coordination, reduces delays in patient care, and minimizes costly duplicative medical tests.

UCHealth is the new health system formed from a partnership between Poudre Valley Health System and the University of Colorado Hospital. Memorial Health in Colorado Springs officially joins UCHealth today, October 1. In northern Colorado, UCHealth operates Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins and Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland which are connected to the HIE.

Banner Health, based in Phoenix, owns and operates 23 hospitals. Its four Colorado hospitals connected to the HIE include East Morgan County Hospital in Brush, McKee Medical Center in Loveland, North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, and Sterling Regional MedCenter in Sterling.

"Banner Health is proud to have its Colorado hospitals participate with CORHIO," said Jim Ferando, Banner Health's Western Region president. "This will benefit patients by allowing hospitals and physicians across the state to access the information they need to provide the most appropriate care."

The CORHIO HIE gives physicians and other authorized medical care providers access to important health information about their patients including hospital discharge notifications, lab test results, X-ray, MRI and other imaging reports, physician transcription reports and referral information. Later, the network will be upgraded to include patient medication lists, allergies and immunizations.

"Banner Health and University of Colorado Health are great examples of hospital systems with strong leadership that are willing to make investments in information technology that improve the care of the communities they serve," said Dr. Larry Wolk, CORHIO's chief executive officer. "Every time a hospital or medical clinic connects to the HIE, they are making a positive impact on the quality of health care in their community. And with each provider we add to the network, we're one step closer to achieving our goal of providing safer, more efficient and effective health care for Coloradans."

On a state level, there are currently 27 hospitals, over 290 office-based providers, 29 long-term and post-acute care facilities and two behavioral health centers connected to the CORHIO HIE. CORHIO is also in the process of expanding its network of health care providers and is actively working to connect two additional hospitals, more than 800 additional office-based providers, 21 additional long-term and post-acute care providers and three behavioral health centers.

About CORHIOCORHIO is dedicated to improving health care quality for all Coloradans through health information exchange (HIE). As the state designated entity for HIE, CORHIO collaborates with health care stakeholders including physicians, hospitals, clinics, public health, long-term care, laboratories, health plans and patients to improve care collaboration through secure systems and processes for sharing clinical information. CO-REC, a CORHIO initiative, assists primary care providers in adopting, implementing and becoming meaningful users of electronic health record (EHR) systems. CORHIO is a not-for-profit supported in large part by grants, including awards from the Colorado Health Foundation and from federal ARRA HITECH funds. CORHIO's technical infrastructure is built on industry-leading HIE technology developed and maintained by Medicity. For more information about CORHIO, please visit http://www.corhio.org.
