Health Dialog Makes Decision Aid Available for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Posted: at 7:12 pm

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Health Dialog today announced it is empowering women to become more informed about their treatment options for breast cancer by making its patient decision aid, Early Stage Breast Cancer: Choosing Your Surgery, available to the general public in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As a public service offering for the third consecutive October, this initiative expands access to Health Dialogs award-winning and nationally recognized tools, information, and resources on this condition.

According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 220,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 20121 and it is currently estimated that 1 out of 8 women will develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime2. This leaves hundreds of thousands of women searching for information as they make life-altering medical decisions.

Health Dialogs early stage breast cancer decision aid helps guide patients through all stages of the decision making process, from explaining how to read a pathology report to illustrating what a patient can expect from different types of surgeries. Patient-friendly explanations of medical terms, comparisons of treatment choices, photos, videos, diagrams, and a printable booklet enable patients to become active engaged and informed as they make the medical decisions that are best for them.

A breast cancer diagnosis can be emotional and unsettling for patients as well as their loved ones, said Peter Goldbach, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Health Dialog. The early stage breast cancer decision aid supports patients and families through the very personal decision-making process by providing them with tools and resources to help them understand their options and feel more confident when deciding what is best for them.

As an additional resource for women and their families who are facing a diagnosis, Health Dialogs HD Care Compass tool, which provides information and support after the decision to have a surgery or medical test has been made, contains information for surgical breast biopsy and needle breast biopsy procedures.

Health Net Federal Services Launches Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign Among Military Community

Posted: at 7:12 pm

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Health Net Federal Services, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Health Net, Inc. (HNT), today announced its month-long October breast cancer awareness campaign focused on the military community and the network of physicians who serve our military families in the TRICARE North Region.

According to the National Committee for Quality Assurance, approximately 70percent of women nationwide aged 40-69 are current on their breast cancer screenings. According to TRICARE North Region claims data, the percentage of these women who are TRICARE Prime beneficiaries and have been screened falls 7 percent below the national average.

Through our month-long awareness campaign, including the introduction of a special camouflage/pink ribbon pin, Health Net Federal Services plans to recognize women in the military community for their contributions and sacrifice to our country, their communities and their families, and to remind them to take time to care for themselves, said Thomas Carrato, president, Health Net Federal Services. We also plan to raise awareness of TRICAREs breast cancer screening benefit. TRICARE covers one screening mammogram for all women beginning at age 40 from a network provider annually at no cost. Women with a high risk, such as those with a family history of disease, may be eligible for screening at age 30.

Key to its breast cancer awareness campaign is a unique camouflage/pink ribbon pin designed by Health Net Federal Services to symbolize a united front in the fight against breast cancer within the military community. Breast cancer pins will be available at targeted provider practices and facilities in the TRICARE North Region. Additionally, camouflage/pink ribbon pins are being handed out at military symposiums and events, as well as health-related runs, such as the recent Navy 5 Miler and upcoming Army Ten-Miler in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 21, 2012.

According to the American Cancer Society:

Because early detection is the best defense against breast cancer and mammograms can detect breast cancer when it is most treatable, Health Net Federal Services is spreading the word: Screening saves lives. Learn more by visiting http://www.hnfs.com/go/camopinkpin.

Health Net Federal Services is the managed care contractor for the Department of Defenses health care program, TRICARE, in the North Region, which includes Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky (except Fort Campbell), Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Donvale centenarian reveals secret to longevity

Posted: at 7:11 pm

CENTENARIAN Mil Mears is quick to reveal his secret to longevity - keep away from wild women.

His answer was accompanied with much laughter and it appears that a sense of irony has also enabled Mr Mears to weather the many ups and downs that 100 years of living brings.

He lost his beloved wife, Lesley, to cancer in 1988 after more than 40 years of marriage.

The couple had three children: Margaret, who was killed in a car accident as a 19-year-old newlywed; Geoff, who succumbed to cancer, aged 50, in 1995; and Ray who lives near Bendigo. There are also four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will celebrate Mr Mears' October 9 milestone birthday with a private party, while Donvale Retirement Village, where he has been resident for the past 20 years, will hold a luncheon in his honour.

Mr Mears has also accepted an invitation to attend a Seniors Week function at Parliament House where he will continue celebrations "with other ancients''.

"I'm half worn out already,'' Mr Mears said.

"I just want a good feed and I'm happy.''

Mr Mears has always looked after his health. He smoked his first and last cigarette as a 14 year-old school boy in India, and he doesn't like wine or beer.

Horace Milsom Frederick Mears was the third of five children born to missionary parents working in India.

The Center for Productive Longevity Announces Winners of the Nationwide Later-Life Story Contest

Posted: at 7:11 pm

BOULDER, CO--(Marketwire - Oct 1, 2012) - The Center for Productive Longevity (CPL) is pleased to announce the winners of its Later-Life Story Contest, which was created to demonstrate that older people can continue to lead successful and inspirational lives. Barbara M. Traynor was chosen for the Inspirational Life Story category and Lynn Brooks for her Entrepreneurship Success Story. Both entries are available to read online at http://www.ctrpl.org/later-life-story-contest-winners. A panel of three independent judges selected the winners from many fascinating stories sent in by people 50 and older. Lynn and Barbara will each receive a prize of $1,000 and a specially designed display trophy.

In Lynn Brooks' winning essay, she wrote about beginning an organization in 1992 at age 59 called Big Apple Greeter in New York City. It is a non-profit that pairs visitors to NYC with volunteer greeters who explore the city together. This was the first "Welcome Visitor" program of its kind in the country. Today, the organization is extremely successful, but it was a challenging journey along the way. Lacking funding, support and computer skills, but holding onto a will to succeed, Lynn overcame many challenges.

Her story describes how far the organization has come. "Today we have more than 300 Greeters -- most are over 55, more than 50% work, many are multilingual, some are blind or use wheelchairs. They are ready, rain or shine, to spend two to four hours with visitors, showing them our people, culture and diversity."

Lynn also shared wonderful metrics. "In terms of success, our cup runneth over. We've had more than 120,000 visitors since we started. We've generated over two billion positive, world-wide media impressions about New York City. Ninety-five percent of our visitors give us 'extraordinary' evaluations. Our volunteer retention rate is incredibly high. We've been called the most cost-effective public relations arm in the city. We've been widely recognized, starting in our early years, with awards that run the gamut from corporations to city government, and in January we will receive the prestigious 2012 Hotel Excellence Lifetime Achievement Award." To read her story, visit: http://www.ctrpl.org/later-life-story-contest-winners.

Barbara M. Traynor's story begins with a situation that sounds familiar to many people. Yet she took some giant leaps of faith to change her life forever.

"Walking provides impetus to ponder. My 65th birthday was hovering. I was not feeling old, but sixty-five? That's major! Why I chose to walk the beach on a frigid winter afternoon is questionable, however with boots crunching on the frozen sand, gloved hands balled into my pockets, I reviewed my six-odd decades. Married at nineteen, three children by twenty-seven, moved eighteen times with a grass-is-greener spouse -- instant on-the-job-training in how to deal with transition -- and divorced after seventeen years.

"Working as an administrative assistant for over forty-five years, single mother raising three children, generated an abundant desire for freedom and travel but little savings and no pension. Life was crammed with drama and trauma. Income matched outgo. I would have to live on Social Security income alone. I screamed into the thundering surf, 'How can I afford to go anywhere? When is it my turn?' Surprise! Someone was listening.

"Arriving home, I checked my email. A message from Alaska cajoled: How about becoming a long-distance, long-term volunteer? Hmmmm -- it seemed that some organizations supplement their staff with volunteers, offering free room and board in exchange for workplace skills? WOW! That I could spend my over 65 'mystery' years this way inspired my imagination. My frozen fingers tingled. I began to rethink retirement."

At age 65, Barbara retired and drove to Alaska from Connecticut with a mission and copious notes about sites to visit along the way. The journey to be a volunteer exploded into becoming a journalist, author and speaker as well. Read her story, chock-full of adventure and inspiration at: http://www.ctrpl.org/later-life-story-contest-winners.

CPL will also select a variety of other inspirational and touching entries to post on its website.

Anti-aging pill being developed

Published: Sept. 29, 2012 at 3:48 PM

LONDON, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- A British doctor says anti-aging drugs that can lower the risk of diseases such as cancer and dementia, as well as wrinkles, will soon be available.

Linda Partridge, a geneticist at University College London, told The Daily Telegraph drugs tackle the cause of those diseases -- age itself.

"One obvious approach in trying to deal with the very rapidly increasing incidence of age-related diseases is to tackle the underlying aging process itself, because it is the major risk factor," Partridge said.

Because the treatments tackle aging of the body itself, they could also preserve other traits, such as muscle strength, hearing and the condition of the skin, Partridge said.

However, living forever is not the goal of the drug, Partridge said.

"We are not talking about immortality, we are trying to get rid of that period of ill health that people get toward the end of their lives, to hold off age-related disease for longer," she said. "I think it will come in gradually, I hope in my lifetime."
