Charter Fitness Raises Over $1,200 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Health officials drawing blood from Yosemite employees to better understand deadly mouse virus

FRESNO, Calif. - Health officials are set to draw blood from hundreds of Yosemite National Park employees as part of a research project that aims to help scientists better understand a potentially deadly virus carried by deer mice that killed three park visitors and sickened six others this summer.

More than 300 year-round employees will provide blood and answer an extensive questionnaire, as park epidemiologists and doctors with the California Department of Public Health try to determine how many workers might have been exposed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome over the years, and why some people get sick and others don't.

Despite living and working in the same environment as the tourists who fell ill, no park employees were among those sickened by the virus that kills one-third of those infected.

"This disease hasn't been around for a long time, and there's a lot we don't know about it," said Barbara Maternal, chief of the occupational health branch of the health department.

Meanwhile, federal epidemiologists are still amassing data as they try to decipher what caused the most concentrated outbreak of the disease recorded since its first detection nearly two decades ago.

All of the tourists who fell ill stayed in the "Signature" tent cabins in Yosemite's family friendly Curry Village lodging area. Investigators later determined that deer mice, the most common carrier of the illness, were nesting inside the insulated, double walls of the new tents and likely were drawn by food guests brought with them.

Deer mice that live in areas with natural predators rarely carry the virus, said Danielle Buttke, a veterinary epidemiologist with the National Park Service. The infection rate for mice trapped in and around Yosemite Valley, where most of the park's 4 million annual visitors spend time, has been about 14 per cent, which is the California average.

The virus is transmitted on airborne particles of mouse urine and feces, but researchers say little else is known about it.

The park has initiated an aggressive trapping program as researchers try to determine whether human intervention can mimic the results shown by natural predation.

"We need to do further research to see if we can influence that," Buttke said.

Sexual health clinic at uni shuts

A sexual health clinic at Aberystwyth University has closed until the end of the year due to a lack of staff.

The decision by Hywel Dda Health Board has angered students, who have started a petition demanding it is reopened immediately.

The weekly service was launched at a campus welfare centre in February 2010, but it shut in August.

The health board said town GP surgeries provided sexual health clinics.

A spokeswoman said every effort was being made to recruit new staff for the university.

Students have also complained that health officials closed the service without consulting them. The health board has been asked to respond to this accusation.

The clinic offered them advice about contraception, sexually-transmitted diseases and check-ups.

CHICAGO On a recent sunny fall afternoon, students from Lake View High School streamed out of a nearby convenience store munching after-school snacks.

Some bought cookies and snack cakes. Others got soft drinks and candy. But the majority walked out of Touchdown Food Mart with crinkly orange bags of Flamin Hot Cheetos sometimes with warm cheese sauce poured on top of the fiery red curls.

Once you start eating them, they are kind of addicting, and you cant help it, said sophomore Zian Garcia. Personally I have been eating them for years, and I cannot stop. I just have this urge to eat them.

In the 20 years since Frito-Lay launched Flamin Hot Cheetos as a snack aimed at urban convenience stores, the product has inspired dozens of spicy competitors, multiple Facebook fan pages, a viral rap video and legions of loyal young fans.

But for many school administrators and public health advocates, the wild popularity of Flamin Hots inspires concern. To many, theyve become shorthand for everything that is wrong with the diets of American children, whose obesity rates have tripled since 1980.

While its true that Flamin Hots, also known as Hot Cheetos, deliver high levels of salt, fat and artificial colors with little nutrition or fiber in return, the same can be said for similar snacks.

Yet there is something about Flamin Hot Cheetos that inflames critics in a way that other snacks including regular Cheetos never did. Some schools and districts, including Illinois Noble Street Charter School Network and the entire Rockford school district, have banned Flamin Hots by name, citing nutritional concerns.

We dont allow candy, and we dont allow Hot Cheetos, said Rita Exposito, principal of Jackson Elementary School in Pasadena, Calif. We dont encourage other chips, but if we see Hot Cheetos, we confiscate them sometimes after the child has already eaten most of them. Its mostly about the lack of nutrition.

Its not hard to find kids who say they eat Flamin Hots or similar products every day, sometimes even for breakfast. If that sounds like an addiction, some scientists say it may not be far from the truth.

Emerging research on food addiction suggests that processed salty, fatty or sweet foods of any kind also called hyperpalatable foods can trigger brain responses similar to those created by controlled substances in addicted individuals.

It takes money to make money. Most investors know that, but with business media so focused on the "how much," very few investors bother to ask, "How fast?"

When judging a company's prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it's booking in the accounting fantasy world we call "earnings." This is one of the first metrics I check when I'm hunting for the market's best stocks. Today, we'll see how it applies to Schiff Nutrition International (NYSE: SHF) .

Let's break this down In this series, we measure how swiftly a company turns cash into goods or services and back into cash. We'll use a quick, relatively foolproof tool known as the cash conversion cycle, or CCC for short.

Why does the CCC matter? The less time it takes a firm to convert outgoing cash into incoming cash, the more powerful and flexible its profit engine is. The less money tied up in inventory and accounts receivable, the more available to grow the company, pay investors, or both.

To calculate the cash conversion cycle, add days inventory outstanding to days sales outstanding, then subtract days payable outstanding. Like golf, the lower your score here, the better. The CCC figure for Schiff Nutrition International for the trailing 12 months is 90.2.

For younger, fast-growth companies, the CCC can give you valuable insight into the sustainability of that growth. A company that's taking longer to make cash may need to tap financing to keep its momentum. For older, mature companies, the CCC can tell you how well the company is managed. Firms that begin to lose control of the CCC may be losing their clout with their suppliers (who might be demanding stricter payment terms) and customers (who might be demanding more generous terms). This can sometimes be an important signal of future distress -- one most investors are likely to miss.

In this series, I'm most interested in comparing a company's CCC to its prior performance. Here's where I believe all investors need to become trend-watchers. Sure, there may be legitimate reasons for an increase in the CCC, but all things being equal, I want to see this number stay steady or move downward over time.

Because of the seasonality in some businesses, the CCC for the TTM period may not be strictly comparable to the fiscal-year periods shown in the chart. Avon school fitness grant about to expire

Students at the middle-high school flock to the fitness room after school for martial arts. But the school may need to put up a fight of its own to keep the fitness class going.

The grant that helped stock the high schools fitness room with equipment and paved the way for the after-school martial arts program is in its third and final year, leaving Principal Sharon Hansen to look for new ways to keep fitness classes going once that grant money runs out.

We had a room when I arrived but there was nothing in it, Hansen said Monday. Eight years later, we have equipment in it and we have a fitness room.

The room now boasts resistance weights, motorized equipment such as elliptical machines and stationary bikes, as well as space for after-school martial arts and weight training courses, offered for free Monday through Thursday to the 7-12 graders.

The funding for a lot of that came from a grant the school received in 2010 through the Rockland-based North River Collaborative program known as STRIDE (Students Taking Responsibility for Individual Diet and Exercise).

Grant money in the amount of $749,479 was split up among 22 schools throughout southeastern Massachusetts, made available for three years through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program, a federal grant offered annually to initiate, expand, or enhance physical education programs, including after-school programs, for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, according to the U.S. Department of Education website.

Part of that grant money, Hansen said, also goes toward hiring certified staff from the Old Colony YMCA to teach the after-school fitness programs.

But come June, that funding is up. And the classes offered for free to class sizes averaging about 15, may be dropped, or offered for a fee, just as athletics and clubs are now.

Were talking about ways to sustain the programs we have, but I dont know that well be able to extend the grant, Hansen said. So were looking at, this being the final year, ways that we can extend our programs, or go for other grants that give us the opportunity to do things in physical fitness.

The future of the Fitness Studio gym at the SBS Centre should be known within weeks.

Membership of the gym has halved in the last six months. About 200 people still have memberships but that number was "trending consistently downwards" according to district council community services manager Sharon Matson.

The actual number using the gym was accepted as being a lot less than 200 although no exact numbers were available. Mrs Matson said the swipe card system which members had previously used when entering the gym was no longer operating, and members had differing views of what regular usage was - with some using the gym once every couple of weeks and others making several visits a week.

It was also unclear how many of those 200 people were using both the Fitness Centre and CBay Fitness as membership covered both facilities.

Back in April, membership of the Fitness Studio was put at around 400, the same as 12 months earlier.

Many of the classes at the Fitness Centre were attracting only three or four participants with those classes also being offered at CBay Fitness.

There has also been a steady loss of staff from the Fitness Studio to positions at CBay Fitness and elsewhere.

There was now only one part time fitness instructor employed at the Fitness Studio.

When the council took over the running of the SBS Centre from the Aorangi Stadium Trust late last year, it undertook to retain the existing level of services, (including staffing and operating hours) at the Fitness Centre until January 31, 2013 subject to adequate patronage.

Yesterday's community development committee went into committee to discuss the future of the Fitness Centre, but chief executive Peter Nixon later said Mrs Matson would prepare a report on the future of the gym by mid November.

Health-care Stocks: J&J, UnitedHealth get a lift from earnings reports

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) Two health-care giants, Johnson & Johnson and UnitedHealth Group Inc., moved higher Tuesday after the companies reported third-quarter earnings that beat analyst estimates.

Shares of Johnson & Johnson /quotes/zigman/230812/quotes/nls/jnj JNJ +1.02% got the boost that many investors were looking for, climbing more than a buck at one point as the health-care conglomerate said adjusted third-quarter earnings were $1.25 a share. That was ahead of the FactSet consensus of analyst estimates, which came in at $1.19 a share.

Citigroup Chief Executive Vikram Pandit is stepping down, effective immediately, and will be succeeded by Michael Corbat.

J&J said net income for the quarter was $2.63 billion, or $1.05 per share including one-time charges, compared with $3.2 billion, or $1.15 a share, for the same period a year ago. Sales were $17.1 billion against last years $16 billion. The FactSet consensus called for sales of $17.5 billion, though analysts said the Street consensus was closer to $17 billion, meaning the company came in ahead of forecasts.

J&J also increased its own forecast for full-year results, saying that 2012 earnings should come in at $5.05 to $5.10 a share, up from its earlier prediction of $5.00 to $5.07 a share.

J&J shares should trade higher today in reaction to what we view as a strong, basically clean quarterly beat, Leerink Swann analyst Danielle Antalffy said in a note to clients.

J&J shares were up 78 cents, or 1.1%, to $69.38 in recent action.

UnitedHealth /quotes/zigman/258846/quotes/nls/unh UNH -1.11% , meanwhile, had a similar earnings report but it wasnt as surprising to investors, and so the share boost wasnt as great. UnitedHealth previewed its earnings recently. Shares were up marginally to $57.67 in recent action.

The company said net income was $1.56 billion, or $1.50 a share, compared with $1.27 billion, or $1.17 a share. Revenue for the health-insurance behemoth was $27.3 billion against last years $25.3 billion. Analysts said they had expected the company would earn $1.34 a share.

Health shift will affect 860,000 Calif. children

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) California Health and Human Services Secretary Diana Dooley said she is confident the state can eliminate a health insurance program serving more than 860,000 children from low-income families without disrupting the quality of care.

The state is eliminating its Healthy Families program and moving those children into the state's Medicaid program to save a projected $73 million a year. A state Senate committee has scheduled a hearing Tuesday to examine the transition.

Dooley said in an interview Monday that the shift will help streamline children's health care and reduce government complexities. But state lawmakers and children's advocates are concerned about the possibility of having children's medical services disrupted.

Assemblyman Richard Pan, D-Sacramento, said he is concerned about the number of doctors willing to accept more Medi-Cal clients. State officials estimate that health providers will receive about 15 percent less under Medi-Cal, which is California's version of the federal Medicaid program for the poor.

"My main concern is that those children continue to have access to the care they need," Pan, a pediatrician, said in an interview Monday. "Ultimately it's about the quality of care."

The Department of Health Care Services has issued a strategic plan that proposes to move all 863,000 children enrolled in Healthy Families into Medi-Cal by Sept. 1, 2013. Families are expected to be moved in four phases, depending on whether their doctors and health plans already accept Medi-Cal. The state plans to start notifying parents next month.

According to the state, eliminating Healthy Families is projected to save the state $13 million this fiscal year and $73 million annually once the transition is completed.

"We recognize these are austere times. The state employees who took a 5 percent pay cut took the pay cut as loyal dedicated public servants," Dooley said. "I believe (health providers) will continue to serve even though there will be a reduction. It does require some sacrifice, not from the children, but will require sacrifice from the people who provide care."

Sen. Ed Hernandez, the Baldwin Park Democrat who is the chairman of the Senate Health Committee, said he questions whether the administration can ensure enough health providers and whether the state will receive the federal waiver it needs to make the change.

"What happens if the health plans don't meet network adequacy, but the notification letters go out? Then what?" Hernandez said.
