SEXUAL TRANSMISSION OF AIDS ON RISE IN GAY MALE POPULATION
AIDS strikes the hardest among teenagers and elderly people in China. And, rates of AIDS in the gay male population are on the rise. This is from a national report on the infectious disease released by the Ministry of Health. Between January and October this year, there have been almost 70000 newly-registered HIV and AIDS cases. The report points to sexual transmission as the primary ways of spreading the disease. Xinhua #39;s official microblog said it accounts for almost 85% of transmissions. Infections among China #39;s MSM population -- males who have sex with males -- is on the rise and it accounts for almost 20% of sexual transmissions. The transmission rates are also on the rise for teenagers aged 15 to 24 and elderly people over 50. Xinhua said infection rates among these 2 groups have seen an increase of 12.8% and 20.2% compared to last year. And as the disease progresses in many sufferers, China will be seeing a growing number of AIDS-related deaths.From:WorldWideNewssViews:0 0ratingsTime:01:16More inNews Politics

Health Insurance Stock Outlook – Nov. 2012

Posted: at 3:48 pm

The health insurance industry has confronted many external challenges in the recent past, such as an uncertain regulatory environment, a challenge to meet the demand of more price- and service-conscious consumers, a fiercely competitive market, shifts in customer mix and a slowly recovering economy, just to name a few.

Notwithstanding the headwinds, the industry continued to remain profitable with the top six players -- UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH), CIGNA Corp. (CI), WellPoint Inc. (WLP), Aetna Inc. (AET), Humana Inc. (HUM) and Coventry Health Care Inc. (CVH) -- reporting earnings growth and delivering positive earnings surprises in the third quarter of 2012.

The earnings performance at each of these players were primarily driven by industry-wide factors like higher enrollment, increasing premium, lower-than-expected medical care utilization and improving commercial insurance pricing. Most of the carriers even raised their 2012 earnings estimates, which reflect optimism for the fourth quarter results as well.

About the Industry

The health and medical Insurance industry is an integral part of the U.S. economy. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, U.S. health expenditures account for about 18% of the country's annual GDP. According to the World Health Organization, health care expenditure per person in the United States is the highest in the world.

Despite huge sums of money spent on health care, millions of Americans lack health insurance coverage or are underinsured. This was largely attributed to a dysfunctional health care system. To rein in the waste and make health care more accessible effective and affordable, President Obama pushed health care reform in an attempt to overhaul the nations ailing health care system.

Health Care Overhaul

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (:PPACA) was passed in 2010 and marked the beginning of a multiyear implementation process. It is the most substantial overhaul in the history of the nation's health care sector.

The reform was intended to provide coverage to the 32 million uninsured Americans, to make health care facilities more affordable, expand coverage for customers with pre-existing health conditions and keep a check on health insurers.

Certain significant provisions of the legislation were: mandated coverage requirements, rebates to policyholders based on minimum benefit ratios, adjustments to Medicare Advantage premiums, the establishment of state-based exchanges, greater investment in health IT, annual insurance industry premium-based assessment, reduction in Federal assistance on Medicare Advantage, restriction on rescission of policies and elimination of annual as well as life time maximum limits.

WellStar Health System Unveils New Tool from Xenex to Enhance Patient Safety

Posted: at 3:47 pm

MARIETTA, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

WellStar Health System was the first to implement and is the only health system in metro-Atlanta using Xenex Healthcare Services room disinfection system in its patient and operating rooms. A green, mercury-free technology, the Xenex system is the fastest, safest and most effective method for the advanced cleaning of hospital rooms, scientifically proven to destroy all major classes of microorganisms that cause hospital acquired infections (HAIs), such as MRSA and Clostridium difficile (C. diff).

HAIs (also referred to as healthcare association infections), caused by deadly pathogens such as MRSA, C. diff, pneumonia and Acinetobacter, are the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Xenexs room disinfection system uses pulsed xenon technology to deliver high-intensity, broad spectrum ultraviolet light to quickly kill microorganisms on surfaces and in the air without contact or chemicals. The UV light penetrates the cell walls of microorganisms, essentially fusing their DNA, leading to instant damage, the inability to reproduce or mutate, and killing the organism. Uniquely designed for ease of use and portability, WellStars environmental services staff operates the Xenex device without disrupting hospital operations. The system is capable of disinfecting a room in as little as five minutes and can disinfect over 30 rooms per day, so hospitals use the device continuously to reduce contamination levels throughout their facilities.

Hospitals are constantly exposed to viruses and bacteria, said Marcia Delk, M.D., senior vice president, safety, quality and credentialing & chief quality officer for WellStar. We want to ensure patient rooms are free from microorganisms that cause infections, and this new technology will provide the safest rooms for our patients and save lives.

Numerous hospitals that have implemented the Xenex room disinfection system have documented reductions in the presence of drug-resistant microorganisms and observed a return on investment through operational cost savings. In hospital trials, Xenex has consistently shown to be more than 20 times more effective than standard cleaning practices and a recent study performed at MD Anderson Cancer Center demonstrated that the Xenex system was more effective than bleach in reducing C. diff. in patient rooms.

Innovative health care systems like WellStar are investing in Xenexs disinfection technology to make their patients safer, said Mark Stibich, Chief Scientific Officer of Xenex. We have proven repeatedly that the science of our pulsed xenon light makes it incredibly effective against the most challenging bacteria, viruses and even C. diff spores. WellStar is taking patient protection to the next level while leading the healthcare industry toward a new and better standard of cleanliness and care.

Our recent partnership with Xenex is another example of how our innovation program is providing real world benefits, said Delk. We believe this new technology holds great promise for healthcare organizations as they address the problem of hospital acquired infections.

The vision of WellStar Health System is to deliver world-class healthcare. WellStar, a not-for-profit health system, includes Cobb, Douglas, Kennestone, Paulding and Windy Hill hospitals; WellStar Medical Group; WellStar Acworth Health Park, Urgent Care Centers; Health Place; Homecare; Hospice; Atherton Place; Paulding Nursing Center; and WellStar Foundation. The Democratic claim that Obama’s health-care cuts top Simpson-Bowles

Posted: at 3:47 pm

(Evan Vucci/Associated Press)

The president's budget actually contains more health-care savings than the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles Commission does.

Rep. Chris van Hollen (D-Md.), on CNN, Nov. 27, 2012

He's got more health-care cuts than Simpson-Bowles proposed.

Van Hollen, on Fox News, Nov. 27

As lawmakers continue to tussle over solutions to the looming fiscal cliff, Democrats have tried to make the case that the Obama administration has been serious about a balanced approach that includes not just tax increases on the wealthy but also spending cuts.

A typical example is Rep. Chris van Hollen, who served on the deficit reduction super committee and is the senior Democrat on the House Budget Committee. In consecutive interviews on morning television shows this week, he claimed that the Obama 2013 budget actually had more health-care cuts than the Simpson-Bowles Commission,

Simpson-Bowles, or more accurately the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, is of course considered by many in Washington as the model for a bipartisan approach even though the commission actually failed to endorse the final report. Former Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wy.) and former White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles, a Democrat, were the co-chairs of the 18-member commission.

We take no position on whether implementing Simpson-Bowles would be good or bad, but clearly van Hollen is suggesting that Obama has been even bolder than the Simpson-Bowles approach. Does this claim pass the math test?

Kansas Health Information Network (KHIN) and ICA Begin Sharing Data with CDC to Monitor Population Health

Posted: at 3:47 pm

TOPEKA, Kan. & NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Kansas Health Information Network (KHIN) and ICA, a leading provider of interoperability technology that enables care coordination and health information exchange (HIE), announced today that they have begun sharing anonymous patient data with BioSense, a public health system that tracks hospital emergency department visits, enabling public health professionals to monitor a broad array of potential public health threats. The BioSense system is coordinated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and was recently re-designed to greatly improve the information provided by the system and to promote standardization and collaboration across states.

KHIN provides de-identified health information from Kansas patients to BioSense in real time, said Laura McCrary, Executive Direct of KHIN. This data allows public health partners to rapidly assess potential health threats in Kansas more quickly than in the past when it was necessary to rely on phone calls or fax. This exchange also helps Kansas providers meet a Stage 2 Meaningful Use requirement to electronically share syndromic surveillance data with public health agencies.

KHIN aggregates health information from healthcare providers across the state of Kansas in an area that covers 85,000 square miles and includes a population of approximately three million.

BioSense has a lot of potential to provide data in a more efficient manner as well as additional information we have not been able to attain previously, said Charles Hunt, State Epidemiologist and Director of the Bureau of Epidemiology and Public Health Informatics at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The utilization of the HIE to submit data to BioSense in Kansas has brought us more quickly to the point where we can begin monitoring patient health in the aggregate to further improve outcomes in our state, Hunt said. Working in conjunction with the CDC will provide a timely and cohesive picture at the state level to detect and characterize public health problems early and coordinate appropriate responses.

KHIN put our CareAlign solution to work quickly and effectively in the development of its statewide HIE, said ICA Chief Executive Officer, Gary Zegiestowsky. The enthusiastic uptake by numerous integrated delivery systems, hospitals and large clinics, and literally thousands of providers, enabled the CareAlign interoperability platform to perform one of its more advanced and complex functions: monitoring and managing the health of a large population. KHINs effort with CDCs BioSense program will become a case study in how health technology can truly improve the health of large and broad populations from which the rest of the country can learn.

About The Kansas Health Information Network (KHIN)

KHINs mission is to improve health care quality, coordination and efficiency through the exchange of health information at the point of care utilizing a secure electronic network provided by a collaboration of health care organizations. KHIN is a provider led 501(c)3. It draws users from a broad geographical area and aligns with state data sources to support cost effective delivery of services. It supports and integrates with community and medical trading area efforts to drive care coordination and workflow changes creating a climate to encourage innovation. Its goals are to ensure providers, patients and communities have long-term access to cost effective, sustainable health information exchange aligned with costs distributed across a broad user base. It also encourages and removes barriers so communities and regions can focus on quality improvement, patient centered medical home and entrepreneurial strategies that effect local health outcomes.

The exterior of your home or business property is exposed at all times to a wide-range of weather, pollution, and other variables. Nintendo Land Wii U Family Review (FGTV 2.65) – Video

Posted: at 3:47 pm

Nintendo Land Wii U Family Review (FGTV 2.65)
In much the same way as with Wii Sports it #39;s easy to overlook the importance and longevity of Nintendo Land for the Wii U. Most reviews I have read talk about it more as a tech demo than a game you would play for any length of time. They reflect the fact that for core gamers this sort of packed-in fun is simply an exercise to show off the system #39;s features before moving on to more serious challenges. However, for me and my family, Nintendo Land is already outlasting and outshining many "fully fledged" experiences. If you are still with me, let me divulge a little more context here. Although many complained about the lack of games on the Wii my family have been more than happy playing just a handful of titles. Wii-Sports Resort (and Table Tennis in particular) has literally had 1000 #39;s of hours of game-play. Add to that Mario Charged Soccer and Go Vacation and that has been enough for six happy years with the Wii. It #39;s not until you get through the first fifty hours or so with those games, like Nintendo Land, that the depth really starts to show. By focusing on a simple scenarios well executed Nintendo creates challenges that stay with families for years -- particularly where multi-player is a factor.
