Improve nutrition for brighter future

Posted: at 6:44 pm

AS JAMAICA celebrates its 50th year of Independence, it remains a well-established fact that young children in poor communities are at risk from under-nutrition and malnutrition due to lack of resources, neglect, abuse and inappropriate care by parents and caregivers.

Approximately one in every four children under the age of four live in poverty, amounting to approximately 70,000.

With 2030 Vision goals articulated, the quality of health care must be improved for the mental, physical and emotional well-being of children.

The need for home-based early-childhood and day-care programmes for poor children from birth to three offers hope of breaking the cycle of poverty, especially when mothers are unemployed.

Increasing the Malnourished Children's Programme is another vital ingredient.

Other recommendations include:

Implement and monitor strategies to meet the number-one goal of reducing poverty and eradicating hunger.

Provide access to basic education as there are now more school-age children in developing countries than ever before.

Improve school-feeding programmes to provide one hot meal for every school-age child.

Provide nutritional supplementation, psychosocial stimulation and improvements in the mental development of stunted children.

Kevin Hunt: Is Berlin Turnpike Fitness Club Closing? Member Wants Billing Stopped

Posted: at 6:43 pm

So maybe you're staying home for the holidays. Great. That leaves plenty of time to prepare for the guilt trip you're going on next month after a December of overeating, drinking and merriment.

Fitness clubs love it when people carry holiday plumpness and big-time remorse into the New Year. New members sign up for a short trial membership or, feeling ambitious, maybe a one-year contract. When the resolve fades, quickly, they leave. When enough newbie members bail out, the clubs sometimes fold so quickly that hardcore members lose both their local gym and their investment in it.

Nandi Colon of Wethersfield contacted The Bottom Line in late November after she says workers at the nearby Retro Fitness on the Berlin Turnpike told her the club would close within days.

"I was told by a manager," she says, "that it was only by chance that he and the other staff found out about the closing [after] a client inquired as to why the normal monthly rate for the use of the gym was not deducted from her account for the current month."

The same thing happened, says Colon, with the previous fitness-club tenant at the site, Friendly Fitness. Colon says, because of a foot injury, she already had canceled personal training sessions costing $160 a month. For now, she was paying $10.64 a month ($9.99 plus tax) automatically deducted from her debit-card account.

But Colon says her bank would not stop the monthly payments because they were part of her contract with the club.

"They wouldn't do it until the doors were actually closed," she says.

So is Retro Fitness closing or not? A Facebook posting on Nov. 29 said no: " We are open and will not be closing. No matter what you've heard. Come to Retro."

The club's general manager, Chris Taylor, said earlier this month there are no plans to close.

"No, we're open," he says. "Everything is good to go."

Altman Fitness, a Minnesota fitness company, is announcing its top three fitness tips for people looking to lose weight in 2013.

Minnesota (PRWEB) December 28, 2012

Losing weight doesnt have to be hard. People just need to know the following three key components to get off on the right foot, continued Altman. According to the companys website, http://altmanfitness.com/ , drinking more water is the first key component. Next, Altman Fitness suggests cleaning out ones kitchen. Lastly, find a workout buddy and get a proper assessment.

If you clean out the diet sodas and replace them with water in your kitchen then half of the battle is ready to be fought, continued Altman. Of course, these three tips alone wont help anyone have dramatic weight loss, but they are steps in the right direction! Jay Altman encourages people nationwide to find a workout partner and then meet with a personal trainer to assess weight loss goals, lifestyle, health concerns and develop a personalized workout plan.

Fitness trends for 2013

Posted: at 6:43 pm

Bodyweight exercises such as handstands are becoming increasingly popular. Photo: Heath Missen

A Google report of the top search terms of 2012 offers insight into the uncensored exercise interests of the Australian public. The top 10 "how-to" searches included how to kegel, handstand and twerk. Kegels are pelvic-floor exercises, while twerking is "a dance move that involves a person shaking their hips and bottom in a sexually provocative manner".

None of these manoeuvres, however, made the top 10 (or even 20) anticipated trends for 2013, according to an international survey of close to 4000 fitness professionals.

Published in the current issue of the American College of Sports Medicine Health and Fitness Journal, the top predicted trend was the need for "certified, educated fitness professionals".

Gold Coast-based Mireille Ryan, the 2010 exercise professional of the year and owner of Health Guru boot camps, says the trend is largely irrelevant to Australians. "In the US, certification is less regulated than it is here," she says. "Here it's a given and Fitness Australia is the main regulator."

Trend No. 2, on the other hand, which is strength training, is highly relevant to us.

"It's so important for everyday usage," Ryan says. "Squats aren't just for tight butts, they're for functional movements, like getting out of cars and sitting on the loo. They are also important for preventing injury."

Another type of strength training, body-weight training, made the No. 3 spot. It's the first time it has appeared in the survey, now in its seventh year. Along with functional fitness, which came in at eighth place on the list, body-weight exercises mark a return to an inexpensive yet equally effective approach to fitness, says Walkley Award-winning health writer Paula Goodyer.

"I personally love the new emphasis on body-weight exercises and functional exercises because once you have the technique right you can do them anywhere, any time, not necessarily in a gym," she says. "Strength training just goes from . . . strength to strength."

Former Senior Member of Denver Broncos Marketing Team Joins Fitness Together Holdings

Posted: at 6:43 pm

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo., Dec. 27, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fitness Together Holdings, Inc., one of the world's largest wellness organizations with more than 350 Fitness Together and Elements Therapeutic Massage franchises operating nationwide, announced today that it has hired Steve Harbula as Director of Digital Marketing & PR to strengthen online presence and overall awareness for both franchise brands.

Harbula will be responsible for implementation, oversight and results of the company's digital marketing and public relations strategies, including online organizational reputation management, social media strategies, web properties, mobile applications, industry information tracking and digital marketing to drive franchise business development. He will primarily be responsible for increasing online awareness for both franchises under the Fitness Together Holdings, Inc. umbrella: Fitness Together, a small group and personal training fitness franchise, and Elements Therapeutic Massage, a rapidly expanding massage therapy franchise.

Prior to joining Fitness Together Holdings, Harbula served multiple key roles with Examiner.com, where in less than four years he helped build the site into one of the top 100 web properties in the country, managed a team responsible for more than 25,000 freelance writers and forged relationships with entities such as the NBA, NCAA, U.S. Olympic Committee, General Motors and Active.com. Before that, Harbula spent 10 years with the Denver Broncos, most recently as Senior Director of Marketing Communications, where he oversaw online marketing, team publications, branding, advertising and promotion for the club and helped the Denver Broncos rank sixth in total revenues out of 32 NFL clubs while competing in the 18th largest and second most competitive market in the league.

"My primary objective is to help Fitness Together and Elements Therapeutic Massage connect with their key constituents through strategic digital strategies that will engage people around their message, mission and brands. I see tremendous potential for both brands to maximize their reach, efficiency and impact in the online space, as well as through broadcast, print and other offline media. I look forward to working with the world-class team here to make that happen," Harbula said.

Last month, following a record-setting year for franchise development and sales gains, the company announced that it had hired Jaime A. Vasquez as EVP/Chief Marketing Officer. Vasquez holds a 20+ year track record of implementing needle-moving marketing campaigns with brands such as Pepsi, Doritos, Sierra Mist, Lays, LG Electronics and Cricket Wireless.

Harbula also joins the company shortly after it reached the 100th Elements studio milestone. Franchise agreements have been signed for that brand for an additional 150 studios to open in the next two years. Meanwhile, Fitness Together, with more than 240 studios around the country, is experiencing significant success after repositioning itself for growth with an enhanced business model that offers both small-group personal training in addition to its staple one-on-one personal training options.

Fitness Together Holdings, Inc.

Fitness Together Holdings, Inc., headquartered in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, is one of the largest wellness franchise organizations in the United States. Fitness Together Holdings owns Fitness Together Franchise Corporation (Fitness Together), which franchises one-on-one and small group personal physical fitness training studios, and Elements Therapeutic Massage, Inc. (Elements), which franchises Elements Therapeutic Massage studios, providing custom therapeutic massage to meet clients' individual needs.

Fitness Together began franchising in 1996 and currently has 240 locations across the United States, Brazil, and Canada. It's a fight over fitness in Santa Monica's parks

Posted: at 6:43 pm

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) Physical fitness is a way of life on the beautiful beachfront oasis of Santa Monica. From sunrise to sunset, there's huffing and puffing in the city's parks as trainers put their students through the paces of every form of exercise imaginable.

All along the 420 acres of greenery paralleling the Pacific Ocean are groups of a dozen or more people furiously pumping iron, doing sit-ups, stepping on and off little benches and stretching on mats. Some flex their muscles with weight machines tied by big rubber bands to pretty much anything that's anchored to the ground.

"It's starting to look like a 24-Hour Fitness gym out there," complained Johnny Gray, an assistant track coach at UCLA and former Olympic runner who says he's often forced to navigate around weight machines, barbells and other exercise impediments as he runs.

In recent years, fitness classes have become as ubiquitous in Santa Monica's signature Palisades Park as dog walkers and senior citizens playing shuffleboard.

Karen Ginsberg, the city's director of community and cultural services, said other park users are complaining about fitness enthusiasts not only blocking pedestrian walkways but also making too much noise, killing the park's grass with their weights and damaging its trees and benches with all the exercise gadgets they connect to them.

"Some people have also expressed concerns about people operating a business on city land and putting the city at risk of liability because they aren't carrying insurance," she said.

So now the City Council is considering requiring that fitness trainers who conduct workouts in Santa Monica's parks and on its beaches pay an annual $100 fee and turn over 15 percent of their gross revenues to the city.

The council was to take up the issue of regulating fitness trainers this month, but that's now been pushed back to at least March. Meantime, Ginsberg said city officials are looking at what restrictions they might put on the use of weights, bands and other equipment.

Although classes offering everything from fitness training to yoga to meditation can be found at several city parks and all over Santa Monica's beaches, Palisades Park, with its stunning ocean views, is by far the most popular place.

As a result, city officials are considering limiting exercise class sizes there to no more than two students per trainer. Under the proposal being considered, other venues could still accommodate the larger groups as long as trainers pay the fees and provide proof of insurance.
