DUBLIN, Ohio, Feb. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Cardinal Health today reported fiscal year 2013 second-quarter revenue of $25.2 billion and a 15 percent increase in non-GAAP diluted earnings per share (EPS) from continuing operations to $0.93.

In addition, the company tightened its fiscal 2013 outlook for non-GAAP diluted EPS from continuing operations to $3.42 to $3.50, which represents the top half of the prior guidance range.

"We've now completed a strong first half to our fiscal 2013 with a good second-quarter performance. While continued brand-to-generic conversions and the previously announced movement of the Express Scripts contract drove a revenue decline in the Pharmaceutical segment, excellent performance from our generic programs and new customer wins fueled profit gains," said George Barrett, chairman and chief executive officer of Cardinal Health. "And, despite continued procedural softness in the industry, our Medical segment reported double-digit growth this quarter. With our performance in the first six months of fiscal 2013, we are now guiding to the top half of our prior non-GAAP EPS range."

Texas Health Resources and Healthways Advance Physician-Directed Population Health Initiatives Supporting Commercial …

Posted: at 2:43 pm

ARLINGTON, Texas & NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Texas Health Resources (Texas Health) and Healthways (HWAY) today announced the launch of two initiatives in their ongoing strategic alignment to deploy an integrated physician-directed population health solution to drive health outcomes and cost savings.

The first initiative is implementation of a consistent system-wide approach to optimize the care of inpatients with diabetes and improve coordination of care after the patient is discharged. Texas Health launched the diabetes care coordination initiative in January at five Texas Health hospitals in Dallas, Plano, Arlington, Hurst-Euless-Bedford and Fort Worth.

The second initiative identifies inpatients who are most at-risk for readmissions, and aligns inpatient and post-hospital care teams around the patients needs. Effective coordination of care after the patient is discharged can improve quality and patient safety, lower cost, improve patient outcomes and help prevent costly readmissions. Coordination of care across the continuum of services is part of Texas Healths overall strategy to integrate health services and help patients navigate through the complex environment of care.

Both approaches involve the patients primary care provider to facilitate monitoring and timely interventions. These initiatives are critical elements supporting the construct of the accountable care agreement announcement made by Texas Health last week and the ACO agreement announced in mid-January between Texas Health and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.

Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources, said, "Texas Health is collaborating with physicians, commercial insurers and employers to develop an accountable care model that not only cares for people when they are ill, but also focuses on keeping people healthy and out of the hospital unless they are acutely sick or injured. Beginning with the physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants of Texas Health Physicians Group, we are leading the way in transforming from the fee-for-service model to a value-based model. We are creating a physician-directed care-team approach that we believe will foster more accountability across the continuum of care, from the individual patient to the physician to every other provider on the team. Our ultimate goal is to help physicians manage the health of their patient populations and improve their health and well-being.

Texas Health is one of the nations leaders in developing an integrated physician-directed population health solution, said Jon Scholl, chief strategy officer and executive vice president of Texas Health Resources. Working with our strategic partner, Healthways, we are building an integrated approach that includes comprehensive services, systems and tools to give physicians an enhanced ability to identify trends in their patient populations. This will facilitate data analysis and predictive modeling based on patient population data to help them identify individual patients who have health risks and could benefit from early interventions. Working with Healthways as we jointly pursue the aims of all of our current and future ACO agreements, the focus will include a new payment model that will reward physicians for meeting quality, efficiency and patient satisfaction measures. These include increasing the number of recommended preventive care and screenings, better management of patients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, reductions in avoidable hospital readmissions and reductions in Emergency Room visits by improving primary care access hours.

Healthways president and chief executive officer, Ben R. Leedle, Jr. said, Our alignment with Texas Health continues to allow expanded opportunities to work together to improve population health and well-being in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. Healthways has led the way in establishing proven tools and the advanced science to deliver a model that improves well-being, which results in significant reduction of health-related costs. We are now delivering to the market examples of how infusing our experience and proven capabilities to improve well-being into Texas Healths broad array of healthcare professionals, facilities and services, which includes Texas Health Physicians Group, can support the critical aims of a commercial ACO model. We are grateful for the opportunity to be working with such an outstanding partner.

Texas Health and Healthways expect to collaborate in designing and implementing additional commercial ACO models with other insurers in the North Texas market in the future.

Health Care Industry Access Initiative Summit 2013 Slated for Next Week

Posted: at 2:43 pm

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The issue of health care access has never been more important. To develop industry-focused, innovative solutions to the challenges of creating access, the Health Care Industry Access Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting collaborative action across the health care industry to improve health care access, will host Summit 2013: Beyond Health Reform to Health Care Access: Solving Access Challenges to Achieve Success in Health Reform. The Summit will be held Feb. 13-15, 2013, at the FHI 360 Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

Experts will address a range of topics, including fostering consumer engagement in health insurance exchanges (now re-dubbed "marketplaces"); how health care organizations are using social media to connect with consumers; the return of the house call; and the latest innovations in care transitions.

"Ensuring individuals have access to the coverage and care they need is a thornier problem than we could have imagined just a few years ago. If simply 'building it' were sufficient, millions more Americans would have coverage and access to primary care," said Carrie Valiant, founder and president of the Health Care Industry Access Initiative. She is a Member of the Firm in Epstein Becker Green's Health Care and Life Sciences practice, in Washington, D.C. "At this summit, we are bringing together some of the sharpest minds in the country to discuss this and other pressing challenges around access. I am confident we will all leave with a better understanding of what we must do to move the Triple Aim from aspiration to reality."

Paul Grundy, MD, MPH, IBM's global director of healthcare transformation and president of the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative (PCPCC), will deliver the keynote address Thursday morning: "How Patient-Centered Medical Homes Can Transform Patient Access to Healthcare." Grundy champions the notion that patient-centered medical homes (PCMH) can provide a foundation for a high-performing health care system. His work has been widely reported in leading magazines, journals, and broadcast outlets. In 2012, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine.

Wednesday's dinner speaker, Beth Ann Swan, PhD, CRNP, FAAN, dean, Jefferson School of Nursing, will share the challenges she faced as a health professional and caregiver, while navigating the health care system on behalf of her husband. The account was recently published in Health Affairs.

Access to care is the most basic step to achieving the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Triple Aimimprove the health of the population; enhance the patient experience of care; and reduce, or at least control, the per capita cost of care. Health care reform or more accurately, its transformation depends on reaching the consumer: People must sign up for coverage, and then access needed care. But offering or even mandating coverage is not enough. Many individuals fail to sign up for programs for which they are eligible, even when those programs are free. More troubling, most uninsured people lack relationships with primary care physicians the entry point for obtaining cost-effective health care services.

"Access a core PCMH tenet is a topic close to my heart. Improving patient access to primary care is central to improving the quality and efficiency of health care and we have substantial evidence to prove that,[1]" said Grundy. "Our success connecting with patients especially those without a primary care provider will determine the fate of our health care system. Health reform takes us part of the way there, but to make a lasting difference, we need more than reformation. We need transformation. I believe this Summit will help us accomplish the latter."

The Health Care Industry Access Initiative is a non-profit, tax exempt organization dedicated to promoting collaborative action by health care industry stakeholders to improve health care access both coverage and services in the United States. It is the only nonprofit organization dedicated to access that is industry-focused across all segments of health care.

Truven Health Launches Analytics for HIE Utilization Evaluation and Population Health Management

Posted: at 2:43 pm

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Truven Health Analytics, formerly the Healthcare business of Thomson Reuters, today announced the launch of HIE Advantage Analytics, a new data analytics suite designed to help public health officials access and analyze operational and clinical statistics housed within state-wide health information exchanges (HIE). The new analytics suite is currently being used in the new West Virginia Health Information Network (WVHIN) to help administrators evaluate HIE utilization. Truven Health Analytics and WVHIN successfully launched a statewide HIE in May 2012.

Mike Boswood, Truven Healths president and CEO said: We are helping HIEs and other forward looking organizations tap into the clinical and administrative data generated in the course of providing and paying for healthcare services. Using this data, our analytics identify insights and opportunities that enable more timely care, lower costs, and improved outcomes.

HIE Advantage Analytics uses near real-time clinical data from healthcare providers, healthcare claims from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and other sources of information that are stored within state-wide HIE repositories. Dashboard-style reports, specialized analytic reports, and ad hoc queries are available within the suite for analyzing and displaying the data.

With the widespread adoption of HIEs, public health officials nationwide will gain access to vast repositories of administrative and clinical data; now comes the opportunity to use that data to improve outcomes, said C. Douglas Shaw, senior vice president for Truven Health Analytics hospital business. WVHIN is one of a handful of HIEs to go live, and with the addition of our new analytics capabilities, has more insight into the exchange activity occurring across the state.

Among the key reporting features built into the analytics suite are the following:

By implementing HIE Advantage Analytics, participating health systems will be able to monitor and advance the health status of the community while improving clinical outcomes. Targeted reports allow users to analyze prevalence, process of care, and patient outcome metrics for specific diseases such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, and congestive heart failure. Rates of screening and preventive care for the population as a whole can be used to identify communities at higher risk for poor health status and inform efforts to improve care in those areas. Users also have the ability in HIE Advantage Analytics to custom define and track unique clinical patient populations, ultimately helping them spot emerging opportunities and risks throughout a community.

PETALUMA, CA--(Marketwire - Feb 6, 2013) - WellFX today announced that United Health Centers of the San Joaquin Valley, a federally qualified community health center serving a patient population of 50,000, will launch WellFX's online social platform for its patients and employees. In addition to the platform, United Health Centers will provide patients and employees with access to WellFX's Resolution, a video-based exercise program and innovative dietary plan.

"We see this as the next step in providing the highest level of care to our patients and employees," said Colleen Curtis, CEO of United Health Centers. "Over the past decade, research has shown that patient engagement models like WellFX's can influence patient behaviors and lead to significant improvements in their overall health and wellness."

Patients and employees enrolled in WellFX by their providers will have access to the standard features of the social platform as well as the unique Resolution content. Nestle Faces Conditions in South Africa for Pfizer Nutrition Bid

Posted: at 11:45 am

Nestle SA (NESN), the worlds largest food company, should rebrand products to get approval from South Africas antitrust authority for its planned takeover of Pfizer Inc. (PFE)s baby nutrition division, the regulator recommended.

Nestle should license existing Pfizer infant formula products to be sold by a third party for 20 years under a different brand to avoid an increase in infant formula prices resulting from the merger, the countrys Competition Commission said in a statement today. The Vevey, Switzerland-based company will make its arguments tomorrow in a hearing before the Competition Tribunal, which will rule on the matter.

Competitors have told the commission the proposed deal raises serious competition concerns, the regulator said. Nestle would be able to reintroduce the Pfizer products under their original brands after the 20-year period, according to the commissions recommendation.

Nestle is seeking international approval for the acquisition, which will give it access to more customers in developing nations such as China. Mexicos antitrust regulator blocked the deal in its domestic market in November, forcing a divestment of assets in that market. Chinese and Australian officials cleared the transaction in their countries that same month.

Nestle wont oppose the conditions set out by the commission, Ravi Pillay, a spokesman for Nestle South Africa, said by phone from Johannesburg.

Nutrition counseling offered to Tech students

Posted: at 11:45 am

The Department of Nutrition, Hospitality and Retailing is taking applications from students who want to receive free nutritional counseling after spring break.

Kelli Paschall, an instructor in the Department of Nutrition, Hospitality and Retailing and coordinator of the counseling, said seniors who are taking Nutritional Counseling will provide free counseling to students who fit the criteria for the study.

The seniors will use the counseling as a way to experience the actual field of nutritional counseling, Paschall said.

It is a way for them to get their feet wet, Paschall said.

This is part of the seniors final grade in the course and has been a requirement in the past, she said.

The course has required students to go off campus in past years, but this year, Paschall said she wants to get students involved with the program.

Students will receive four to five sessions, which will last from 45 to 60 minutes each.

The counseling is aimed at helping students gain knowledge of healthy eating choices and tackling weight issues. Not only are students that may want to lose weight candidates for the counseling, but underweight or average students also will be considered, according to TechAnnounce.

Paschall said many athletes have shown interest in the counseling because they want to gain better understanding about supplements and balancing their nutritional needs while managing their workout schedules and demands.

A nutrition counseling session could cost more than $50 per hour depending on insurance and the type of counselor chosen, Paschall said.
