(courtesy City of Sunnyvale/2013) Elevations for a new City Sports Club planned in Sunnyvale on E. Arques Avenue.

The Sunnyvale City Planning Commission is exploring a new fitness center for the city that would be located on E. Arques Avenue.

Eunice Byun and Kenneth Rodrigues & Partners are proposing a 45,000-square-foot City Sports Club at 1165 E. Arques Ave., off Lawrence Expressway.

The first of nine Bay Area locations for City Sports Club had its grand opening in October 2012 at 1045 E. Brokaw Road in San Jose, a model for all the clubs.

The second club opened Feb. 16 at 610 Newhall Drive, also in San Jose.

Those are the only two in the state so far, with one set to come to Fremont in the near future.

The fitness center would offer its visitors a diversity of options at a location that is currently an empty lot.

At the operating City Sports Clubs in San Jose, there is plenty of cardio equipment with individual viewing screens, free weights and resistance machines, a three-lane lap pool, indoor cycling with stadium seating, and full basketball courts. Members also have access to an indoor spa, a dry sauna and a locker room.

For an extra charge, the club offers racquetball, leagues, personal training, a juice bar and on-site child care.

Firefighters, workers save heart attack victim at 24 Hour Fitness

Posted: at 11:46 pm

Firefighters and two 24 Hour Fitness employees worked to revive a 67-year-old man who went into cardiac arrest at a Costa Mesa gym, officials said Friday.

About 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Costa Mesa firefighters received a call that a man had gone into cardiac arrest while working out at the 24 Hour Fitness at the Triangle, according to Costa Mesa Fire Department Battalion Chief Fred Seguin.

Another gym member initially notified employees at the 24 Hour Fitness that the man was down in the cardio area, said Josh Graves, a fitness manager at the club who saw what happened.

When firefighters arrived, two employees at the gym had already started CPR and readied an automatic external defibrillator, also known as an AED machine, giving the man one shock, Seguin said.

"It was cool to work as a team to save that man's life," Graves said.

CPR was again performed while firefighters prepared their machine. After another shock, the man started breathing again and had a pulse, according to Seguin.

"I can't tell you how grateful I am that the member pulled through," Graves said.

Firefighters took the man to a hospital.

"Everything was textbook as it should go," Seguin said. "What these gentlemen did was the saving grace of this 67-year-old gentleman."

Health and Wellness Continue to Take Center Stage in Market for Food Formulation and Ingredients

Posted: at 11:46 pm

ROCKVILLE, MD--(Marketwire - Feb 22, 2013) - Health and wellness are twin pillars driving developments across the U.S. food industry in 2013, according to "Food Formulation and Ingredient Trends: Health & Wellness," a just-released study from market research firm Packaged Facts.

Beyond efforts to help curb record high obesity rates and chronic illnesses, Packaged Facts predicts that both processed food manufacturers and foodservice operators will continue to try to win over consumers with other offerings that deliver nutritional benefits consistent with the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010.Perhaps most of all, growing consumer interest in more healthful food will propel additional development of food and beverage products that deliver health-related benefits derived from individual ingredients or combinations of ingredients in desirable product designs and formats in terms of taste, meal or day-part occasion, affordability, convenience, portability, portion control, and related attributes, particularly those associated with broader and more all-encompassing health and wellness goals such as hunger and weight management.

"Offering products that deliver in accord with the goals set forth in the Dietary Guidelines provides processed food manufacturers with clout to stand their ground on the nutritional value of many of the processed foods and beverages they sell, and to do so in the context of concepts, verbiage and graphics that consumers have been exposed to and about which they already possess a level of awareness," says Packaged Facts' research director David Sprinkle.

In the report, Packaged Facts examines formulation and ingredient trends through five health and wellness topics that are broken down as follows:

UnitedHealthcare Opens New Comprehensive Health Benefits Store in New York's Chinatown

Posted: at 11:46 pm

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

UnitedHealthcare today opened its newest health benefits store at 168 Centre St. in Chinatown, New York, continuing the companys nearly 20-year commitment to serving local residents with comprehensive and personalized customer service. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held today with elected officials, community leaders and UnitedHealthcare executives.

The new UnitedHealthcare Asian Plaza in Chinatown replaces the companys first-ever retail-like customer support center that opened in 1994. This latest storefront is the 23rd to open in the United States and was modeled after the successful design used at the companys Queens store. On average, more than 3,000 people a month have visited the Queens store since it opened in 2011.

With a focus on serving the Asian-American community, the new UnitedHealthcare Asian Plaza in Chinatown will provide residents with information and customer service on all UnitedHealthcare benefits plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, small business and individual, while also offering health and wellness services, and free public health education programs.

UnitedHealthcare is opening this newest storefront in Chinatown in order to provide individuals and businesses with simple, personalized information about both their benefits coverage and health and well-being, said Chris Law, national vice president, UnitedHealthcares Asian Initiatives. We are honored to join with local elected officials, community leaders and residents to open our new store to the community.

At the new 11,000-square-foot consumer-support center in Chinatown, visitors can sit down with customer service professionals and discuss their health benefits in their native language, ask questions about claims or billing issues, and seek assistance on other health insurance-related matters.

Specially trained staff are also available to help local residents, including those who are not UnitedHealthcare customers, identify and apply for more than 15 types of state and federal social service programs, including the Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) program, Medicare Savings Program (MSP), the New York State Food Stamps program, and heat and electric subsidies.

Combining high touch with hi-tech, computers and iPads are available for visitors to access and print health-related information, and a health screening kiosk measures blood pressure, pulse and body mass index (BMI) all important indicators that help people better understand their health status. UnitedHealthcare also will host an ongoing series of education seminars that are free to the public. Topics will include nutrition and exercise, disease management and financial planning.

Health care is a local resource, and as consumers are increasingly being asked to play a greater role in their personal health, many people may need extra support. Neighborhood centers like the UnitedHealthcare Asian Plaza in Chinatown will become more critical to ensure consumers have easier access to local resources so they can learn more about their health and the options available to them, said Tom Paul, chief consumer officer, UnitedHealthcare. We look forward to serving New York residents and expanding this model to serve additional communities around the country.

UnitedHealthcare serves more than 3.8 million New York residents with a care provider network of 230 hospitals and more than 46,000 physicians and other health care professionals statewide, including more than 1,000 Asian-American physicians who provide culturally and linguistically appropriate care and support to Asian-American plan participants in New York City.

Los Angeles health officials concerned about TB outbreak on skid row

Posted: at 11:46 pm

(Reuters) - Los Angeles County health officials have asked for federal assistance to analyze and contain an outbreak of tuberculosis within the city's homeless population, a spokeswoman for the county agency said on Friday.

Los Angeles County Health Department spokeswoman Mabel Aragon said the agency is still in the process of confirming the number and type of TB cases in the county.

"The CDC is helping us with surveillance and statistic gathering," she said.

CDC spokesman Scott Bryan confirmed that the federal health agency has been asked by local and state TB officials to assist with the outbreak investigation. Bryan said the CDC plans to dispatch staff to the state in the next two weeks.

The Los Angeles Times reported that health workers have identified about 4,650 people who were probably exposed to a persistent outbreak of the contagious disease on downtown Los Angeles' skid row.

The newspaper said that over the past five years, county officials have identified 78 cases of a unique strain of the contagious disease, including 11 deaths. Sixty of those cases were homeless individuals leaving in the skid row area.

In an interview posted on the Los Angeles health department's website, Kiren Mitruka of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said: "Although progress has been made toward eliminating TB in the U.S., TB outbreaks continue to occur and remain a challenging issue."

The United States had about 10,528 cases of tuberculosis in 2011 and there were 529 deaths from the disease in 2009, according to the latest full year CDC statistics.

The CDC responds to TB outbreaks only when state and public health departments exceed their surge capacity to control it, Mitruka said.

"We don't go in unless we're asked," she said in the online interview.

10 Things Your Health Insurance Plan Will Soon Have to Cover

Posted: at 11:46 pm

If youve ever had health insurance youre probably all too familiar with what your planwont cover; the list of expenses denied when you try to file a claim can seem endless. It's easy to wonder what is covered.

But this week Americans got a lot more clarity about what health insurance plans must cover starting in January 2014, thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) just published its list of what it calls essential health benefits.

These 10 new categories apply to both individual and small employer plans, as well as new plans under Medicaid that will cover, for the first time, low-income adults even if they dont have kids. And some large employers who provide health insurance may add in some benefits from the new list as well.

The Affordable Care Act Won't End Disparities

Its a strong list, and includes, importantly, coverage for mental health and substance abuse treatment not always part of many health insurance plans currently. But the specifics of what you get such as how many days of in-patient treatment for drug abuse will be left up to each insurance plan. Those specifics will also be determined by how much you pay for coverage.

When signing up this fall for insurance, New York City resident Kim L. is hoping for an affordable insurance plan with outpatient coverage. His bill for a $40,000-plus stay at an inpatient facility for seven weeks over the summer of 2012 to treat alcohol and antidepressant abuse was waived by the facility because he knew one of the doctors. But his business failed while he was away, and he let his health insurance lapse. Hes hoping a new, affordable plan will come with outpatient counseling to help him stay clean.

What Kim, or anyone else, pays depends on the type of plan they choose. The new rules allow insurers to have metal levels platinum, gold, silver, and bronze that charge different rates for premiums, deductibles, and co-pays. As you might guess, the specific benefits you get for each depend on what level you pay for.

Simply put, the broad categories of treatment and care that each plan must provide thanks to this weeks rules include:

outpatient medical care

emergency care

Bryan County to celebrate National Nutrition Month

Posted: at 10:46 pm

DURANT March is National Nutrition Month, making it an opportune time for communities, families and individuals to eat better for improved health.

The first step toward creating a healthier Bryan County is having families right here our friends, neighbors and ourselves choosing to eat better and become more active, said Renee Wyrick Nutrition & Fitness Coordinator of Bryan County.

Created 40 years ago by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, National Nutrition Month is a worthwhile celebration because healthier eating can help Oklahomans lead stronger, more active lives.

Families and individuals can use the month as a springboard to start or build upon healthier eating habits, such as filling half of ones plate with fruits and vegetables, and cutting back on salt and sugar.

Simple yet effective nutrition tips can be found at ShapeYourFutureOK.com, a free resource presented by the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust and Oklahoma State Department of Health that encourages Oklahomans to eat better, move more and be tobacco free.

The website also features links to other nutrition, fitness and tobacco control resources, including one to SuperTracker, a new online tool created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help people keep track of their own diet, calories and physical activity.

A balanced, nutritious diet can help reduce the risk of chronic and potentially fatal illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer.

One-third of Oklahomans are obese, which makes us one of the most obese states in the country, said Keith Reed, director of the Oklahoma State Department of Healths Center for the Advancement of Wellness. Its critical that every person, business, school and community group do their part to promote better health for Oklahoma. Planning or participating in National Nutrition Month activities is a great place to start.

Citizens also can ask local leaders to adopt policies that encourage healthier food and beverage choices in communities, schools and workplaces.

The Bryan County Turning Point Coalition is ready to help cities, businesses, schools and afterschool programs put policies in place that will improve the health of our local residents, said Jerry Speck. A healthier workforce and healthier families will make our communities stronger and more attractive to new and expanding businesses.

More Nutrition Professionals Needed To Monitor Athlete's Dietary Needs

Posted: at 10:46 pm

By Karina Imran

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- More food and nutrition professionals are needed to monitor the athlete's optimal dietary intake pattern, said Special Adviser to the Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz.

He said this was important for the focus was no longer confine to elite athletes, instead all levels of athletes.

"Although we already have nutrition officers, they cater only for elite athletes.

"We need to instil a healthy dietary pattern to athletes at a young age as early between 10 and 12 years because we need to prepare the second echelon to take over from senior athletes in future," he told Bernama.

Dr Ramlan, who was former National Sports Institute (NSI) chief executive officer, said when he started work as a medical officer at the institute in 1990, there was only one nutrition officer to keep watch on the athlete's dietary needs.

"Nutrition officers can help athletes maintain a well-balanced diet in order to compete at the high levels.

"They are equipped with knowledge and expertise on nutritional needs and diet, but in the areas of specialisation in certain sports, they must have in-depth knowledge to gain the athletes' trust," he said.

Asked whether national athletes consume balanced diet, Dr Ramlan said he doubted it due to lack of exposure that could enlighten them on the importance of adopting a healthy eating pattern.

"However, it is too late to enlighten them now. That is why I encourage young athletes to be given the exposure," he said, adding that young athletes should know what, how much and when to eat so that it would become second nature to them.
