It's getting sweeter in the Southand at one university in particular.

In recent years the rising cost of student debt has given birth to an odd phenomenon: a population of ostensibly generous older men who appear poised to solve the higher-education crisis, one student at a time. Once a relatively underground subculture, this benevolent group of men is coming to the rescue across the country, essentially volunteering to subsidize the students tuition costs. But that description could be, shall I say, sugarcoating it.

Yes, these men are ponying up their moneyplus morefor financially struggling students. However, its not free money, and its not all students. In other words, these benefactors typically expect some compensation from their beneficiariesstudents who generally tend to be women willing to accept the help from the men in exchange for providing some tender loving care. And, at least, flaunting their good looks.

"Sugar daddies"the official moniker granted to these wealthy menand the microcosm they occupy arent anything new, but theyve become more mainstream in recent years. That theyve emerged as a noteworthy group during America's student-debt crisis is indicative of their growing prevalenceas well as that of "sugar babies," the ones entrenched in that crisis. And the subculture"daddies" and "babies" alikeappears to be expanding rapidly. 2014 saw a huge spike in sugar babies nationwide, especially in the southern states, according to new data from SeekingArrangement, a site where "babies" and "daddies" sign up and connect. The trend itself, let alone writing about it, might seem frivolous or demeaning. But the data could clarify what's going wrong with the system and where those problems lie.

The latest figures on student-loan debtnow an average of $28,400 per personare frightening. This number has steadily risen over the past few years, and, worse yet, its likely much higher than estimated considering only 57 percent of public and private nonprofit colleges volunteered to report their statistics this past year. Moreover, these debt figures exclude for-profit colleges, which are notorious for their especially high student debt-default rates.

What might have been little more than a nuisance in the past has turned into an outright hindrance to many students financial security: It takes about 14 years on average to pay off the debt. As a result, young women across the country are turning to sugar daddies in droves. Many of them use SeekingArrangement, which describes itself as "the worlds largest Sugar Daddy dating site." More than 1.4 million students have signed up as members, including nearly 1 million in the U.S., according to the company. The website claims that 42 percent of its members are students, many of whom are incentivized by SeekingArrangement to join; people who sign up with a .edu email address or show proof of enrollment, for example, receive "premium memberships" for free.

The whole thing may seem shady, but in its defense SeekingArrangement has strict rules prohibiting the exchange of money on its site. It also apparently has an in-house team that does background checks on members. Understandably, the company is mired in controversy. One New York Post contributor even accused the sugar-baby industry of trying to justify prostitution, one of the many claims to which SeekingArrangement eventually responded with a disclaimer. Last year, the company set up a FAQ-esque page, "a refresher course in the definitions of Sugar" that aimed to delineate the so-called differences between sugar baby-ing and prostitution.

But for many, thats all old news. Now, the latest data reveals not only that the phenomenon is spreading, but also that its gaining traction in certain areas much more than in others.

The University of Texas at Austin, in particular, saw a massive growth in sign-ups between 2013 and 2014. With a 227 percent increase the growth far outpaced all other schools in the country when it came to the sugar phenomenon, according to SeekingArrangement. In fact, according to the company, last year was the first time several Texas schools even appeared on the list. (Four schools in the Lone Star State made the most recent top-50 list). So while sheer sugar-baby numbers are important, growth rates are telling, too. Here are the top-five schools in terms of growth in sign-ups between 2013 and 2014:

What is Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimers disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. In most people with Alzheimers, symptoms first appear in their mid-60s. Alzheimers disease is the most common cause of dementia among older adults.

The disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer. In 1906, Dr. Alzheimer noticed changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness. Her symptoms included memory loss, language problems, and unpredictable behavior. After she died, he examined her brain and found many abnormal clumps (now called amyloid plaques) and tangled bundles of fibers (now called neurofibrillary, or tau, tangles).

These plaques and tangles in the brain are still considered some of the main features of Alzheimers disease. Another feature is the loss of connections between nerve cells (neurons) in the brain. Neurons transmit messages between different parts of the brain, and from the brain to muscles and organs in the body.

Although treatment can help manage symptoms in some people, currently there is no cure for this devastating disease.

Scientists continue to unravel the complex brain changes involved in the onset and progression of Alzheimers disease. It seems likely that damage to the brain starts a decade or more before memory and other cognitive problems become evident. During this preclinical stage of Alzheimers disease, people seem to be symptom-free, but toxic changes are taking place in the brain. Abnormal deposits of proteins form amyloid plaques and tau tangles throughout the brain, and once-healthy neurons stop functioning, lose connections with other neurons, and die.

The damage initially appears to take place in the hippocampus, the part of the brain essential in forming memories. As more neurons die, additional parts of the brain are affected. Estimates vary, but experts suggest that more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimers disease. Unless the disease can be effectively treated or prevented, the number of people with it will increase significantly if current population trends continue. Thats because the risk of Alzheimers increases with age, and the U.S. population is aging.

Alzheimers is a slow disease that progresses in three stagesan early, preclinical stage with no symptoms, a middle stage of mild cognitive impairment, and a final stage of Alzheimers dementia. The time from diagnosis to death variesas little as 3 or 4 years if the person is older than 80 when diagnosed to as long as 10 or more years if the person is younger.

Everybody would like to buy a light bulb which lasts at least as long as the box you bought it in claims it will. However, as I mentioned in the definite guide for declaration found on light bulb packages, the longevity of light bulbs is usually much shorter than it is declared on their package. Before jumping to the section you are interested in, you should also be advised to buy light bulbs from companies with stricter quality control and brands you trust in. In long term, the difference in price between alight bulb of quality and a cheap light bulb pays off when it comes to frequency of their replacement.

General Electric Company was the first to patent a method of making tungsten filaments for use in incandescent light bulbs back in 1906, and the method hasnt changed a great deal during that time. Although they do have the lowest initial cost, compared to CFLs and LED light bulbs, incandescent light bulbs have the shortest longevity and highest energy consumption for the same amount of lumens (light) they are able to emit. So, how to make them last longer?

As mentioned in article about declaration found on light bulb packages, most household bulbs which operate on higher voltage than declared lose around 60 percent of the declared life. That is why buying light bulbs with more volts (V) than it is proposed by standard in your country can prolong their operation. Another two factors which influence the longevity of incandescent light bulbs are temperature and vibrations.

The best way to counter this effect, and stick to usage of tungsten incandescent light bulbs, is to install a continuous (dial type) dimmer switch. By slowly turning on a cool light bulb, you prevent surges of electricity from rushing through the filament. Unlike some of the old dimmer switches, modern dimmers do lower energy consumption as well. Therefore, turning down the maximum amount of light to the amount you actually need makes your electricity bill lower, and your light bulb lifespan longer.

Incandescent light bulbs are also sensitive to vibrations that may come from slamming doors, machines, shocks or even noise. The solution to this problem is usage of vibration resistant fan bulbs or rough service light bulbs. These bulbs have an extra filament that reduces the vibrations. Unlike most standard incandescent bulbs which last anywhere between 700 and 1,000 hours, rough service light bulbs can withstand vibrations and can generally last 2 to 10 times longer.

Holistic medicine means consideration of the complete person, physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually, in the management and prevention of disease. It is underpinned by the concept that there is a link between our physical health and our more general 'well-being'. In an holistic approach to medicine, there is the belief that our well-being relies not just on what is going on in our body physically in terms of illness or disease, but also on the close inter-relation of this with our psychological, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental state. These different states can be equally important. They should be managed together so that a person is treated as a whole. In fact some feel that the word holistic should really be spelt 'wholistic'.[1] An holistic approach means that the doctor is informed about a patient's whole life situation.[2]

Holistic medicine treats symptoms but it also looks for underlying causes of these symptoms. One way of explaining this is by looking for 'the story behind the story'. An example of this has been described in an Accident and Emergency setting where patients may present with one problem and then, having had relief from pain, diagnosis, and care, may explain what led to their problems and attendance. This may reveal, for example, domestic violence, exploitation, or danger.[3] The same can be applied in a General Practice, or any other medical consultation, setting.

Holistic medicine is something that alternative medicine practitioners traditionally use as a basis for their treatments. However, it is a common misconception that holistic medicine is just 'alternative' or 'complementary' medicine. It is true that holistic medicine allows for a wider range of treatment approaches to be used together and encourages open-mindedness for these different approaches. Some of these approaches may include the use of complementary and alternative medicine but holistic medicine does not dismiss conventional medicine. It uses conventional medicine as part of the treatment approach. Nutrition, exercise, homeopathy, prayer, acupuncture and meditation are just a few other treatments that may be used together with conventional medicine as part of an holistic approach. Holistic nursing is also recognised as being an important concept.[4][5]

Clinical holistic medicine actually dates as far back as Hippocrates.[6] An holistic approach to patient care was also suggested by Percival in his book - the first textbook of medical ethics - first published in 1803. Percival stated: "The feeling and emotions of the patients require to be known and to be attended to, no less than the symptoms of their diseases."[7]

More recently, John Macleod in his book 'Clinical Examination', first published in 1964, also commented that "we should aim to be holistic in our care".[8] Also, the seminal work by Michael Balint, 'The Doctor, the Patient and his Illness', first published in 1957, represents an important landmark in seeing the patient as a whole rather than as isolated pathology.[9] Illness is not just an isolated physical disorder or random event. Perhaps bad habits start in medical school, referring to a patient as "the mitral stenosis in bed 7" or "the lobar pneumonia in bed 13".

An holistic approach is good practice and has been strongly advocated by the Royal College of General Practitioners for many years.

The consultation can be used as a tool in holistic healthcare. There is a separate article called Consultation Analysis but it seems that doctors no longer see patients as walking pathology as mentioned above.

Techniques can be used within the consultation to help find 'the story behind the story'. In 1984, both 'Doctors talking to patients' by Byrne and Long and 'The Consultation: An Approach to Learning and Teaching' by the Pendleton group were published.[10] These approaches, and also the work of Balint, sought to ask questions such as:

The Science of Free Radical Testing

Free radicals are bad. They cause cell mutations, damage immune function, cause wrinkles and aging and are a contributing cause behind many diseases including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and many other diseases.

Free radical damage is a factor behind almost every known disease according to some researchers. The very processes by which our bodies derive energy are impaired when excessive free radicals mutate our body's cells.

Dr. Gero, at the Holistic Naturopathic Center, is now measuring free radical levels with a device called the Revelar, which provides a new way to give patients a very specific and inexpensive way to analyze one's increased risk for premature aging and degenerative diseases.

Elevated levels of free radical damage - also known as oxidative stress - can contribute to a host of health problems. Free radical activity has been blamed for early aging, as well as tissue damage that can lead to chronic conditions such as heart disease, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer's disease and other ailments. By being aware of free radical levels, one can better determine which foods and supplements would be appropriate for reducing the risks of premature aging and degeneration and can easily be retested to assess whether their nutritional protocol is working effectively for them.

Revelar measures the concentration of a set of aldehydes in a patient's breath. These aldehydes are by-products of, and are directly correlated with, oxidative stress. The aldehydes measured are critical biomarkers of lipid peroxidation, the process by which excess free radicals attack lipids in cell membranes, causing tissue damage.

Reagent compounds in the breath tube react rapidly and completely with most of the saturated aldehydes associated with oxidative stress including hexanal, heptanal, decanal and MDA. This colorimetric reaction to cumulative aldehydes is then measured by the Revelar reflectance spectrophotometer, which generates a score based on the intensity of the reaction. Revelar's technology is capable of detecting parts per billion of aldehydes.

Because Revelar measures the most important aldehydes produced by free radical damage, test results are more specific and accurate than any other available test.

David Chernoff, M.D., former medical director of Chiron Corporation, a leading developer of immuno-assays, has stated, "Revelar has been extensively shown to be an accurate and precise measurement of free radical damage in human breath condensate."

Lowering the level of aldehydes by reducing oxidative stress may improve health and slow the aging process. One way to do so is through the introduction of nutritional supplements and antioxidants. Antioxidants stabilize free radicals and may protect cells from damage.
