Holistic Treatment | Dual Diagnosis

Posted: January 27, 2017 at 11:47 am

Holistic medicine focuses on treating the entire person and not just a disorder or affliction. Holistic health care providers believe that an individual is made up of different parts including physical, emotional, environmental and spiritual aspects. All pieces must be addressed and balanced to solve any issues, sickness or disorder, and to make a person whole.

Holistic providers do not discount traditional medicine; rather, most use it in tandem with alternative methods. Holistic treatment focuses on the idea that each person can take charge of their own well-being, and unconditional love and support are the best healers. Holistic principles include:

There are many methods of holistic medicine out there today for just about every disorder. Most of the time holistic methods are combined with traditional therapy and/or pharmacology ranging from meditation to medication. As many as 40 percent of Americans look for something other than traditional, conventional or Western methods of health care, as published by the National Institute of Health. This includes holistic medicine.

There are several other terms that are sometimes used when referring to holistic medicine, including alternative, integrative and complementary medicine as well as natural healing. It is important to recognize the difference between these terms. Alternative medicine typically refers to anything outside of what is considered conventional, although these lines are blurred and the definition of conventional seems to be widening.

Complementary medicine usually means that conventional medicine is used as the primary healing tool and other non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical means are used to complement it. Integrative medicine is a combination of conventional medicine and complementary medicine. Natural healing typically focuses primarily on the physical healing without using medications or invasive procedures. Holistic medicine is most often the preferred term in that it encapsulates all forms in healing the whole person.

Here are some examples of tools used in holistic medicine:

The Academy of Integrative Health & Medicinestates that the main person in charge of the healing process is the patient. You are responsible for your own well-being. The medical practitioner serves as a guide or mentor along the path, but patients must learn to love themselves first and the rest will flow from there. These methods may include lifestyle changes as well as drastic changes in mindset and behavior. Breaking old habits can often facilitate healing across the physical, spiritual and emotional levels.

One of the main benefits of holistic medicine is that it does serve to treat the whole person and not just the current symptoms. By working to find the root cause of an addiction, for example, a person could be more likely to avoid relapse.

Holistic medicine serves to be helpful and not harmful and looks first to the most non-invasive methods available. While holistic providers do prescribe medication when necessary, they may also seek natural remedies and non-pharmaceutical answers. Holistic providers may also be more cost-effective at times as they seek to use therapies and mindfulness techniques over other more expensive methods that may not be as effective long-term. By giving each individual control over their body and the healing process, providers are taking a step back.

Holistic treatments may encompass many different methods of both conventional and alternative medicine, but the overarching theme is that the person will ultimately build a better, more balanced sense of self while coming to love who they are in the process. The four main elements of self are often explored and brought into balance, which can greatly aid the recovery process. The four elements are:

In order to heal, one must first explore the cause or mindset that triggered the disorder. Toxic and negative thoughts should be eradicated and replaced with positive ones. Holistic medicine encourages group and individual therapy to help with redirecting thoughts and changing behaviors.

Keeping your body healthy through exercise, proper nutrition and balance of hormones is another facet of holistic medicine. Holistic providers may encourage herbal remedies or mood-enhancing foods to help the healing and recovery process.

Spiritual healing can be more difficult and often holistic medicine encourages meditation and methods to help each person learn to accept and love who they are. Managing your environment is also an important step in the recovery process. Surrounding yourself with positive influences can help. Holistic medicine seeks to balance all four of these elements of life and believes that in so doing, recovery is possible.

Sometimes one method or a linear path just isnt enough for long-term healing. Those suffering from addiction and depression, for example, can benefit from a holistic approach that serves the entire self. Dual diagnosis treatment offers the best in all care and serves to discover which treatment plan is right for each individual, addressing not just addiction but other co-occurring mental health issues.

If you or someone you know would like more information on how dual diagnosis care can include facets of holistic treatment, call us for more information. Wed be happy to discuss how you can get started on your journey to a healthier, happier lifestyle.

It Can Help Your Heart continued...

Make sure you have salmon and other fish like trout and herring. Theyre high in omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce the risk of heart disease and slightly lower blood pressure, among other benefits. Shoot for two servings a week.

You should also know thatthe fiber in veggies -- also found in whole grains -- helps lower your odds of cardiovascular disease. It also helps digestion and regularity, which often are a problem for older adults.

Remember that no one food is going to help your heart, any more than just one would help your brain or your bones or your muscles or any other part of your anatomy.

You need a complete, healthy diet.

If youre eating a lot of fish but, in addition to that, youre living on ice cream and candy and stuff like that, Rock says, its not going to save you.

A loss of memory, a big worry among some older adults, has been linked to, among other things, a lack of vitamin B12. You can get that in:

Alzheimers disease has been linked to chronic inflammation, which can be caused by foods like white bread, french fries, red meat, sugary beverages, and margarine.

The science is still emergingon the relationship between some foods and brain health. Check with your doctor or dietitian.

There was some issue with the Food and Drug Administration disallowing food claims for memory loss, says Adam Drewnowski, the director of the Nutritional Sciences Program at the University of Washington.

I would not want to identify a specific food that prevents memory loss. I probably would tell someone that if you want to be functioning well, then some fruits and antioxidants will do better for you than another slice of cake.

Antioxidants, found in many vegetables and in fruits like blueberries, help reduce inflammation. They also help you get rid of damaging stuff created when you convert food into energy.

Again, though, its important to realize that good brain function may be as much about what you dont eat as what you do.

Alzheimer’s Disease | AD | MedlinePlus

Posted: January 12, 2017 at 3:49 pm

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia among older people. Dementia is a brain disorder that seriously affects a person's ability to carry out daily activities.

AD begins slowly. It first involves the parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language. People with AD may have trouble remembering things that happened recently or names of people they know. A related problem, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), causes more memory problems than normal for people of the same age. Many, but not all, people with MCI will develop AD.

In AD, over time, symptoms get worse. People may not recognize family members. They may have trouble speaking, reading or writing. They may forget how to brush their teeth or comb their hair. Later on, they may become anxious or aggressive, or wander away from home. Eventually, they need total care. This can cause great stress for family members who must care for them.

AD usually begins after age 60. The risk goes up as you get older. Your risk is also higher if a family member has had the disease.

No treatment can stop the disease. However, some drugs may help keep symptoms from getting worse for a limited time.

Alternative Medicine Career Information and Education …

Posted: at 3:43 am

A student seeking to begin an alternative medicine career may attend a college, university or specialty school that offers certificate and degree programs in this field. There are a number of certificate programs available in alternative medicine specialties, such as holistic health, massage therapy, herbal medicine, yoga instruction and oriental body therapy. Anatomy and physiology courses are common to many types of alternative medicine programs; other coursework varies.

Students can prepare for an alternative medicine career as an herbalist, for example, in a Bachelor of Science program that provides courses in science and herbal science. Some Master of Science programs combine studies of traditional Western medicine and non-traditional Eastern medicine in preparing one for a career in holistic medicine. Areas of study in an alternative medicine doctoral program include acupuncture, oriental medicine and homeopathy. Students in a doctoral program, such as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (N.D. or NMD) program, gain the opportunity to improve their holistic skills and assist patients in private practices.

Depending on an individual's area of practice, state licensure in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) may be necessary. As of August 2016, the Doctor of Naturopathy (N.D.) and the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (NMD) were recognized in 16 states and four U.S. territories; naturopathic doctors in these regions must pass the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examination Board exam (NPLEX) after completing their education. Most states require acupuncturists to earn a license by passing the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine exam. Other areas, like reflexology and iridology, are not approved, recognized or regulated by any state.

Alternative medicine is still emerging in the medical field. Depending on the state, a doctorate in naturopathy may be recognized as a valid doctoral degree, while in others, a doctorate in a different medical field can help the aspiring alternative medicine practitioner. Specialized training is needed no matter what field one is entering into. Licenses, certifications, or associate's degrees are examples of the kinds of programs available.

Anti – Aging Formulas from Rejuvenation Science

Posted: January 7, 2017 at 2:44 pm

The goal of our Anti-Aging program is simple: maintain health and youthfulness throughout your life. This means be in the best of health mentally and physically. Obtain good medical care and maintain a strong immune system to avoid disease. Exude energy like someone who is much younger. Be happy. Enjoy life.

There are four major theories of aging described in the book The Anti-Aging Revolution by Dr. Ronald Klatz, O.D. and Dr. Robert Goldman M.D., founders of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. These four major theories are:

Wear and Tear Theory of Aging

Neuroendocrine Theory of Aging

Genetic Control Theory of Aging

Free-Radical Theory of Aging

Jean Carper in Stop Aging Now! demonstrates that aging is actually a monumental, progressive deficiency disease. It begins to appear in adulthood, picks up in middle age and takes a giant leap after age fifty. You can prevent and correct aging to an amazing extent by taking antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other supplements.

Ms Carper asks "if there was a magic potion to preserve youth, who wouldn't take it?" She answers her rhetorical question by saying "the prospect of youth potions is no longer remote. In fact, such awesome agents are here now. The staggering truth is that scientists have already identified scores of substances that strike at the very heart of aging by slowing down and even reversing the deterioration that we now view as normal aging. And although you may not realize it, you have wide access to virtually all these youth potions."

Read Jean Carper's lively and compelling, well-researched book, published in 1995. Then you will further understand the basis for the Rejuvenation-ScienceAnti-Aging Supplement Series, reflecting updated research through 2007.

We have acquired the finest quality formulations to create the Rejuvenation ScienceAnti-Aging Supplement Series. These supplements are chosen to address aging as it is presented in these theories of aging, and the clinical, every-day signs of aging that we all experience.

Rejuvenation ScienceGreen C enhances the basic level of antioxidants in our Maximum Vitality multivitamin. This synergistic antioxidant formulation includes Vitamin C, Green Tea, Grape Seed Extract, N-acetylcysteine, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Turmeric (curcuminoids), Lycopene, and Blueberry. It addresses the Wear and Tear, Genetic Control, and Free Radical theories of aging.

Rejuvenation ScienceCoenzyme Q10 Ubiquinol is the most absorbable form of Coenzyme Q10. It is also an antioxidant. Ubiquinol assists the mitochondria to provide cellular energy to minimize cellular and organ wear and tear from a sometimes toxic and stressful environment. Studies have shown Coenzyme Q10 to be beneficial especially for normal heart function, to protect DNA from free radical induced oxidative damage, and to maintain healthy energy levels.*

Rejuvenation ScienceBiom3ga Supercritical Fish Oil provides Omega-3 fatty acids -- DHA and EPA -- to balance the excess omega-6 fatty acids in a typical modern-day diet. "Long-chain omega 3 fatty acids, the beneficial component ingested by eating fish or taking a fish oil supplement, reduce heart attack and other problems related to heart and blood vessel disease in people who already have these conditions, as well as their overall risk of death" according to the AHRQ.

Rejuvenation ScienceBiom3ga Krill Oil provides significant health benefits from three important nutritional categories: omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids and antioxidants. These nutrients work together to support healthy cell membranes, joints, the heart and many other body systems. Biom3ga Krill Oil helps maintain healthy cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels that are already in the normal range.

Rejuvenation ScienceHigh Energy Chai Green Tea contains powerful antioxidants called polyphenols and flavonols. Research shows that components of green tea may help manage cholesterol & triglycerides levels already in the normal range; support healthy blood clotting; enhance immune function; and enhance weight loss. The Chai flavor blend gives it great flavor.

The wear and tear theory of aging says that the body and its cells are damaged over time by use and abuse. The organs liver, stomach, kidneys, skin, etc. are worn down by toxins in the diet and the environment, by the excess consumption of fat, sugar, caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, by the ultraviolet rays of the sun, and by the many physical and emotional stresses to which our bodies are subject. Wear and tear is not confined to the organs, but exhibits at the cellular level also.

This theory holds that moderate exercise, good diet, nutritional supplements, and other treatments can help reverse the aging process by stimulating the bodys own ability to repair and maintain its organs and cells.

Hormones are vital for repairing and regulating body functions. When aging causes a drop in hormone production, it causes a decline in your bodys ability to repair and regulate itself efficiently. The neuroendocrine system is made up of these hormones which regulate many body functions. Hormones are regulated by the hypothalamus gland which is located within the brain.

Hormone replacement therapy helps to affect more efficient body functioning.

DNA (dioxyriboneuclaic acid) controls the functioning of the cells and organs of the body. The genetic control theory postulates that DNA is programmed with a certain lifespan. As the DNA ages, it directs the cells to age and then to begin to die.

Antioxidants and anti-aging treatments act to support and extend the life of DNA. Coenzyme Q10 has been shown to protect DNA from free-radical induced oxidative damage.

A free radical is a molecule with an extra electron. It is inherently unstable, attempting to bond with another molecule to steal a matching electron and attain electrical equilibrium. In doing this the free radicals create new free radicals and extensive bodily damage. That damage can be in the form of RNA and DNA damage, interfere with the synthesis of proteins and destroy cellular enzymes which are needed for vital chemical processes. As people age, this free radical damage can create mutant cells, leading ultimately to cancer and death.

Free radical damage is also known as oxidation. Substances that prevent the harmful effects of oxidation are known as antioxidants. Common antioxidants include Vitamins C, E, and beta carotene, the precursor to Vitamin A. Many other substances have antioxidant properties including Coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid (sometimes called the universal antioxidant), N-acetylcysteine, flavonoids from plants which include green tea, grape seed, turmeric, lycopene (from tomatoes), and bilberry. The antioxidant value of nutrients is measured on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale.
