Though it may be hard to believe in the year of Joker, The Irishman has quickly become one of the most divisive films of 2019. Whether its the use of anti-aging technology, director Martin Scorseses decision to release the movie via Netflix, or if its really a masterpiece, there are plenty of opinions floating around. Now that The Irishman is finally available to stream, the conversation has turned toward its epic runtime -- and some are arguing it would have worked better as a TV series. Martin Scorsese disagrees.

At three and a half hours long, The Irishman requires a better-than-average attention span. But in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the iconic director was quick to dismiss any idea that The Irishman should not have been a movie. He told the magazine:

Its hard to argue with the man -- especially since he and star Robert De Niro spent more than a decade trying to get The Irishman made. Martin Scorsese credits Netflix with producing the film, and believes they took a big risk in letting him have the final say in what ended up on screen. He told Entertainment Weekly that traditional studios are mostly concerned with profit, and hes sure they would have balked at the films ending.

Martin Scorseses defense of Netflix comes at a time when the studio has faced some serious backlash. Fans and industry insiders were frustrated with the decision to offer only a limited number of screenings in theaters around the country before it debuted on the streaming platform. And The Irishman is just the latest in a string of Netflix releases that have caused a huge debate about the rise in streaming and how it affects Hollywoods many traditions.

Even if The Irishman was a gamble for Netflix, it has already paid off. The movie is one of the most critically acclaimed of the year. Despite controversy over how Netflix distributed the film, it seems to be a sure bet for Oscar nominations. And for Martin Scorsese, its a win too. Not only did he finally get to work with Al Pacino, but he was able to fully realize his vision for a story hes wanted to tell for years.

A $40M, 3-story fitness club will open in Middletown – nj.com

The Middletown planning board has just approved a proposal from Life Time, the folks behind six other massive N.J. fitness clubs.

The Monmouth County location will consist of a 120,000-square-foot building with a ground-level beach club and is expected to open in late 2021.

Life Time operates 147 clubs around the country, including locations in Bridgewater, Montvale, Berkeley Heights, Florham Park, Mount Laurel and Princeton. The first location opened in Florham Park in 2008.

Life Time bills itself as a premier healthy lifestyle company that delivers a comprehensive healthy living, healthy aging and healthy entertainment experience that goes well beyond fitness to encompass the entire spectrum of daily life for individuals, couples and families of all ages.

And so, they shun the gym label.

One thing we are not is a gym, as I think youll notice in the images, says Life Time spokesperson Natalie Bushaw. What we hear often from members is were todays modern country club without the golf.

The new location will include:

Three floors with a ground-level outdoor beach club and bistro with leisure and lap pools, a whirlpool, resort-style seating and cafe

4-level parking garage

Dedicated space and studios for exclusive group fitness, cycle, yoga and Pilates programming; one-on-one personal training and small group GTX and Alpha Training

More than 400 pieces of cardiovascular and resistance training equipment

A full-size basketball court

A dedicated Kids Academy, for kids ages three months to 11

LifeCafe, a nutrition-focused, fast-casual restaurant featuring a full menu, Meals to Go and grab-and-go assortments, along with Peets coffee and proprietary nutritional supplements

LifeSpa, a full-service salon and spa for hair, body and nails

Luxurious dressing rooms with whirlpools, saunas, steam rooms and complimentary towels and lockers

The project is expected to total $40 million, and Life Time plans to create 250-plus new full and part-time jobs.

The Unexpected Psychological Benefits Of Aerobic Fitness – Forbes

Longstanding research has found that exercise that increases our cardiovascular activity brings a number of health benefits, including lowered blood pressure; improved cardiovascular health; strengthening of the immune system; regulation of weight; and moderation of blood sugar. Interestingly, it appears that vigorous aerobic activity (maintaining more than 60% of aerobic capacity) brings greater cardiovascular health benefit than moderate activity. Exercise therapy has been found to improve a measure called heart rate variability, which is associated with greater levels of psychological well-being and resilience in the face of stress. One strand of research finds that aerobic exercise conducted in a mindful state (i.e., with enhanced self-awareness, such as yoga and Feldenkrais) brings greater mood benefits than routine vigorous or moderate cardio workouts. Many of the activities we associate with self-development, from counseling and psychotherapy to meditation, are pursued in a state of reduced physical activity and enhanced self-awareness. Might it be the case that vigorous aerobic activity is an equally promising path toward emotional well-being and a positive psychology?

According to the National Institutes of Healths National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, yoga, a discipline of meditative movement is associated with such benefits as stress relief, pain reduction, and emotional well-being. There is also evidence that yoga also improves the aforementioned heart rate variability and lessens symptoms of depression. In an excellent review article, Julia Belluz notes the limitations of much of the research on the benefits of yoga, but cites fascinating evidence that yoga may be uniquely helpful in reducing inflammation in the body. Similar amounts of time spent in yoga and general physical activity yield greater inflammation benefit for the yoga participants, presumably because of the added components of mindfulness.

In a review of brief approaches to psychotherapy that I conducted with two colleagues at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, an important conclusion was that these methods are effective to the degree that they generate novel, constructive experiences for clients. Such corrective emotional experiences deal with maladaptive patterns of emotion and behavior by activating more constructive ones. Thus, for instance, when a client retreats from a therapist out of fear of rejection, the therapist may encourage engagement and provide an active experience of acceptance and understanding. Such emotional experiences are readily internalized, helping people build new modes of construing and doing. This is the basis for many behavioral and cognitive therapies, where we learn to face and challenge our patterns of anxiety, negative thinking, and depression in emotionally impactful ways.

The unexpected benefits of aerobic exercise, yoga, and similar disciplines may arise from their ability to provide similar corrective emotional experiences, albeit outside of a therapeutic relationship. Through vigorous exercise, we directly challenge our limits and experience ourselves as efficacious and achieving. Through mindful movement, we experience enhanced levels of self-control and mastery. A great example of this occurs among the money managers and traders I work with, who make active use of meditation to deal with the stresses of markets and their inherent risks and uncertainty. In the midst of threat, direct experiences of calm and focus promote a unique experience of the self as being in control, facilitating sound decision-making. Exercise, like coaching, counseling, and psychotherapy, is a vehicle for generating fresh experiences of the self, reinforcing and expanding our strengths.

In recent articles, Ive explored the psychological benefits of living a purposeful life and the importance of emotionally connecting with a positive vision of our future selves. All of these can be paths toward emotional resilience, increased mindfulness, and an enhanced capacity to pursue life goals. In a recent interview, Steven Goldstein and Mark Randall explore the mindfulness associated with special forces operations, highlighting the idea of mindfitness. A well-constructed program of exercise, expanding our abilities to extend our limits and sustain self-control and efficacy, provides a uniquely effective form of self-developmenta promising therapy for the mentally well and program for mindfitness.

These Boston-based fitness experts all unanimously agree: The theme for this year is slowing down. After all, we can only perform at our best when we feel our best.

1. Jaylee Oberg and Rachael Junard on: The wellness industry shift

The founders of You Good, Sis?, a collective for black and brown women looking for a mental, spiritual, and physical check-in by way of fitness events and community yoga classes, both agree: The wellness industry is shifting. As people struggle to keep up with the fast-paced and demanding approaches to fitness, I see more of an emphasis on overall wellbeing that fits into any lifestyle, Oberg says. I am so happy to see a wider range of fitness options at traditional gyms where walking clubs are being introduced by the same places that run bootcamps and high impact classes. She also anticipates dance classes will gain in popularity as a way for people to shake stress away and just be themselves. Junard adds that classes to stretch, roll, and realign the body are a great thing to see as people begin to understand the importance of cross training.

2. Cameron Ahouse on: Boston-based recovery services

It may not seem like it from his Instagram page, but EverybodyFights trainer Cameron Ahouse is all about rest and relaxation. I think people are realizing that you can train as hard as you want, but if youre not taking the time for proper recovery, then youre most likely not going to see the gains you want and you risk the chance of becoming injured, he says. This is something I have had to learn the hard way. He goes on to add that he utilizes the services offered by the stretch studio BdySqd, wearable technology Whoop, and CBD company Beam to support his active lifestyle.

3. Kenny Vertus on: Wearable technology

Boston-based personal trainer Kenny Vertus says wearable fitness devices have revolutionized the fitness industry, and he only expects them to continue to pop up. Fitness trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors, and many more devices offer a degree of transparency about our health/fitness, he says. Were starting to see fitness studios like BKBX and Orangetheory incorporate devices into their routine allowing visitors to measure their fitness level. These devices are also able to measure your recovery level as well as sleep, making users more aware of how hard they should push it on any given day.

4. Michael McKinney on: Mindful workouts

Certified personal trainer Michael McKinney is calling the biggest trend hes predicting for 2020 mindful workouts, and he doesnt just mean yoga. Exercise is many peoples go-to stress reliever, he says. In 2020, we will see an increase in emphasizing the stress-relieving component of workouts. The amount of time we spend recovering from exercise is just as important as the amount of time spent training, and this has a direct effect on our movement and performance. This includes productive sleep, proper warm-ups and cool downs, pliability, and mobility. He adds that Boston is already seeing a lot of these options for fitness consumers, which include compression therapy boots, percussive therapy guns, and standalone assisted stretch studios.

5. Christie Wang on: Convenient fitness options

Youve probably heard of Peloton and you might even have a few dumbbells at home for those days when you just dont want to go to the gym. Pilates instructor Christie Wang says at home fitness subscriptions are only going to become more popular. As people grow more and more strapped for time, at home products like Bostons own Hydrow make fitness even more convenient, she says. Hydrow, she explains, brings the feel of outdoor rowing to your living room and also offers a plethora of mat workouts like strength training, yoga, and pilates. Even she cant ignore the shift to recovery and mindfulness though, too. Boston sneaker giant New Balance is sprinting into the future, using 3D printing to make portions of the sneaker soles in some of its newest models. New Balance has partnered with Somerville-based 3D printing technology developer Formlabs to create the Rebound Resin which is being used to print components.Boston-headquartered Reebok is using shear-thickening fluid in its PureMove bra. The technology was studied at the University of Delaware to make bulletproof vests lighter and incorporated into NASA spacesuits to help protect astronauts from space shrapnel. With PureMove, the idea is the bra adjusts the amount of support provided based on impact offering improved comfort.

I can already smell the pies, the rolls and the pumpkin spice, which are not always very nice to my thighs. Oh, how the holidays can take over our lives and throw us off track from our goals.

I get it. Mamas cooking is too good to miss, and through all the laughter and walks down memory lane, you are three plates in before dinner even starts.

It happens. We become mindlessly consumed with all the stimulation from relatives visiting to the holiday cheer and the good old traditions. You are stuck on a holiday roller coaster. You have created habits over the years to justify not making time for your workouts, overeating and indulging more than usual.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a piece of pie every now and again, but do you really need the whole apple pie on Christmas Day?

Its time to wake up, Sleeping Beauty, and start to acknowledge what you are doing. You are stuck in an unconscious cycle and going through the same motions every year. The first step to breaking your holiday cycle and break free from your poison apple of holiday weight gain is to acknowledge the habits you want to change. Here are a few ways to get through the holidays fit and step into the new year with a new rear.

Create a Workout Schedule

No need to try and create an unrealistic plan of trying to hit the gym six days a week for two hours. Try picking one hour, two to three days a week, so you can be consistent. If possible, schedule the days for the same time, e.g., Mondays and Wednesdays at 5 p.m. or Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 a.m.

Once youve set your two to three days a week, make these days/times nonnegotiable. No canceling on yourself, no substitutes, no excuses. If you get in more days than what you schedule, those are bonus days.

Mindful, Not Mindless, Eating

Its OK to enjoy the holiday treats, but do your best not to eat mindlessly. Enjoy that cookie, piece of pie or pumpkin roll. Do not beat yourself up for living life. What you can do is learn to balance your meals for the day, so if you know your dinner is going to be high in carbs, start your morning with a high-protein breakfast. My go-to is salmon-and-egg-white tacos 4 ounces of salmon, four to six egg whites and some veggies scrambled in two to three corn tortillas topped with avocado (optional).

Stay true to yourself and your goals. Its not rude to say, No thank you, to the peer pressure from friends and co-workers to join in on the holiday treat fest. Your peers are not trying to sabotage you; they are just trying to be courteous. It is up to you to help them become aware of your changes through your consistent actions. Show them your results instead of talking about your goals.

Amy Bueme brings loads of energy to her workouts.

The co-owner of Catalyst Fitness brings an even greater level of enthusiasm to her fitness centers, as the seventh location in the regional chain will soon attest.

She and her husband, Joe, next month will open their largest Catalyst yet, this one at 281 Meyer Road in Amherst, in a former Dicks Sporting Goods store along Maple Road near the Boulevard Mall.

A swath of turf will sit smack dab in the center.

My vision for this club was having a football field in the middle of it, Bueme said. Its because when I started putting turf into the clubs, people of every age loved being on it. They were lifting weights, pushing sleds, flipping tires. Theres just something about it. It makes you feel like an athlete, it makes you feel like youre having fun.

I have light shining down on the turf, and blue light shining up into the sky to give it a really cool effect, like the Bills stadium.

Bueme said she and her husband expect to open the new center late the second week of December. It will join clubs on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo; French Road and Wehrle Drive in Cheektowaga; Broadway in Depew; Eggert Road in the Town of Tonawanda; and Seneca Street in West Seneca.

The fitness center on Broadway is a smaller Catalyst Express club and the Buemes may transition their Eggert Road location in similar fashion when the new club opens less than 2 miles to the northeast. Several new members also have asked for a women-only section in the smaller club, Bueme said.

The new club also will feature a Fit Lab with heart-rate monitors, Fit benches, Airdyne bikes, and treadmills that climb 23 levels in elevation and go ridiculously fast, she said, as well as a Cardio Cinema that will allow users to watch inspiring shows on a theater screen while they work out.

We have a very small Cardio Cinema and Broadway, and it really took off, Bueme said.

Amenities also will include a Kids Club; cycling, yoga, free weight and personal training rooms; a 4,000-square-foot group fitness studio; and executive-style locker rooms with glass saunas.

There's a lot of different areas for people to do a lot of different movements depending upon what they feel like doing, or where they're comfortable, Bueme said.

The new location will set yet another milestone for the Bueme family, which got into the fitness business in 1979 and owned 2001 Health Odyssey and Gold Gym clubs in the region before closing them and launching the Catalyst brand seven years ago.

The couple, who married 23 years ago, have about 250 employees. They own several of their sites, including the newest one.

The beautiful thing about my husband and I is that he loves the real estate end of it and I like the club planning, Amy Bueme said. I think we're doing very well as we grow.

The new location will have about 60 employees and 15 personal trainers. It also will feature Robbie Raugh and Ellen Coleman, two of the top group fitness instructors in the region.

Rates are as low as $9.99 a month to join a single club, $19.99 to visit all clubs and bring a friend and $29.99 with unlimited group classes. Catalyst waives its enrollment fee, allows people to join without a contract, and throws in a couple of other extras from Black Friday to Cyber Monday. Peloton Climbs to Record High in Black Friday Fitness Frenzy – Yahoo Finance

(Bloomberg) -- Peloton Interactive Inc. gained almost 10%, hitting a record of $35.23 per share after KeyBanc said the company was seeing strong traffic on Black Friday.

Since Pelotons initial public offering fell flat two months ago, investors have called for the company to reevaluate its expensive growth ambitions and focus on turning a profit. The companys basic connected fitness subscription costs $39 a month. Its bikes start at about $2,000 and treadmills start at about $4,000.

SunTrust said on Nov. 5 that an early reading into the companys marketing promotion of its home trial and its $58 per month bike plan this holiday season bodes very well for its second quarter results. Analyst Youssef Squali estimated at the time that Peloton will become profitabile sometime in 2022 before achieving full-year profitability the following fiscal year.

The companys app shares exercise programming with users who dont own its hardware but pay a monthly subscription fee for the classes, which include yoga, meditation and strength training.

The stock is up about 21% from its IPO price of $29.

Jadon Johnson has been participating in triathlons for about eight years.

You got to learn how to balance all your training because youre training 3 different disciplines, so you got to learn to balance swimming with cycling with running and not having it all mash together, Jadon said.

Thats where the endless pool comes into play.

He runs in there, he swims in there, he absolutely enjoys it. He trains, and it makes him a better performer all the way around, Jacque Johnson said.

Hot Springs Spas wellness expert Jacque Johnson says the fitness system includes various options for exercise while being light on the joints.You can even go for a jog on the underwater treadmill.

Its tough. It takes a lot of its a lot harder than you think it would be. I thought itd be pretty easy but water running actually takes a lot of knee drive, it takes a lot more force and you go a lot slower than you think you do, Jadon said.

He began using the pool to train about a year ago and says hes noticed improvements in his athletic ability with one of his favorite aspects being the recovery he can get after his exercise.

You can double it and get the water temp up a bit and use it for recovery which I do all the time. Its one of my go-tos, stretching, stretch and relax, let your body loosen up a little bit, Jadon said.

Experts say even simply walking against the current can give you a good workout while still being easy on your joints.

In addition to training purposes, Jadon says those hoping to recover from an injury might want to give it a try.

I mean the treadmill in there is great for it and the warm water can really help you loosen and then work back the mobility of the muscles, Jadon said.

Anytime youre in water youre much more buoyant, youre moving faster, youre recovering quicker, Jacque said.

Giving athletes, or those simply hoping for a low intensity workout, an option they can choose to have right at their own home.

The Thanks + Giving Turkey Throwdown, organized by CORE Cycle.Fitness.Lagree on Waterman Street, raises money for pediatric cancer patients at Hasbro Childrens Hospital, as well as activities planned for the Izzy Family Room, a home away from home for families dealing with pediatric cancer.

While many of us slept in, more than three dozen diehards joined in to cycle, sprint, and lift in 30-minute chunks, followed by a 5k run/walk on Blackstone Boulevard.

This is a huge time of giving thanks for things There are people that arent as fortunate as others, and we want to give a little piece of our heart [to them], said general manager Tiffany Costa.

Together, when we stand united, were stronger And thats what we want to put out into the community.

The business has been running the event for 13 years, and a different organization benefits each year.

Add a BURST of fitness to your holiday regimen – Buffalo News

The University at Buffalo Center for Successful Aging recommends considering a BURST approach to fitness for the holidays.

Avoid injury because it can reverse months of gains.

Listen to your body. When something doesnt feel right, stop.

Get help when lifting heavy objects.

Build in rest days.

Know risks of your fitness and have a plan if something goes wrong.

Push past your comfort zone. Rating of Perceived Exertion can help. This is a self-rating of intensity based on heart rate, breathing and muscle fatigue during exercise. On a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 representing the hardest effort possible, aim for an intensity of 7 interspersed with lower intensity recovery phases at about 3 or 4.

Aim for behavioral and performance goals instead of body composition goals. For example, I will exercise or meditate, or both, at least 20 minutes each day through the holidays, instead of I will lose weight during the holidays.

Seek small, attainable goals and grow from there. For example, exercise at least once during the first week, then twice the second week; or walk one block the first time out, twice the second and so on.

Combat all-or-nothing thinking. Small gains count and small setbacks are not failures. Stay encouraged.

Track progress. Count steps, keep an exercise journal.

Find a challenge each day. Take the stairs, if its safe for you. Park further from your destination. Pick up the pace during part of your walk.

Variety prevents boredom. Walk the block, or the mall, alternating your pace. Do 5 to 10 squats; if its too easy, hold weights. Try some pushups, even if you have to start by doing wall pushups.

Find a weight you can lift eight to 10 times before getting tired; move up in weight when it becomes easy to lift it 12-15 times.

Add intensity to your typical workout, even if for a few minutes.Get out of the gym. Try rock climbing, dancing, laser tag.

Build in short 3- to 5-minute exercise breaks.

Look for YMCAs, senior centers and other winter recreational pursuits.

Be active together. Social support can help you stay motivated and committed.

Team and group activity improves adherence.

Create an enjoyable environment that supports common goals.

The Carmel, California-based toque helms the kitchen at Aubergine, where he turns the central coasts gorgeous seaborne bounty into works of edible art.

The Chicago native worked under acclaimed late chef Charlie Trotter for four years before being tapped to helm Four-Star LAuberge Carmels signature restaurant, where he and his team have earned myriad accolades over the past few years.

To stay inspired, Cogley consistently introduces new culinary experiences, from a regular roster of cooking classes to his Rediscovering Coastal Cuisine collaborativedinners.

Forbes Travel Guide recently caught up with the decorated California chef to learn about his culinary inspiration, chat about his unique globetrotting adventures and understand why in the world hes training for a 100K ultra-marathon.

Chefs Take on Abalone

Prior to becoming a chef, you had an interesting career. Can you tell us about it?

Absolutely. It was interesting. It was a career that completely changed my life. I was a professional figure skater for Feld Entertainments Disney on Ice. I had the opportunity to travel the world, experience cultures, food, see the wonders of the world all while performing. Oh, and I even met my wife [while I was a skater].

I made sure I took every opportunity to learn about the city, the culture and the food of every place we toured to. I absolutely loved being overseas exploring markets, eating at Michelin Star restaurants and enjoying the recreation of the area, whether it was hiking a mountain [like] Mount Fuji or climbing the Great Wall of China.

What inspired you to turn to cooking?

I always enjoyed cooking from a young age. I knew that was the career path I eventually wanted, but traveling the world performing as a professional ice skater was just too good to turn down.

It is a way that I get to be creative. I love beautiful places and creating beautiful plates. I like a good challenge and I have found a career that certainly does that.

Aubergine's Avocado Dish

You recently became a triathlete and long-distance runner. What sparked that interest?

If I am being really honest with you, I had gained almost 50 pounds working in a very intense culinary environment. I won a lottery at The Treadmill [running store] that got me into the Big Sur Marathon, which I could have never done without a friend who encouraged and coached me every step of the way, from gear to positively believing in me.

Most of the people in my life tried to stop me from partaking, as I was so out of shape. However, I missed the athletic side of myself, and I had to do it. Then I was hooked! I moved on to triathlons, Ironman competitions and now I am really into endurance trail running.

Thanks to Suunto Multi Sport Team, which I am currently on, I am able to travel to find 100K races. This allows me to keep exploring my palate as well, finding new flavors and creating even better dishes!

Do food and fitness have a correlation for you?

Absolutely. I like to cook food that tastes amazing but isnt loaded with fat. It is possible to cook amazing, flavor-filled food that people can enjoy, and your body will feel good after eating it as well.

Most people enjoy enticing flavors that are not heavy.Some of my dishes take days to prepare, but the flavor is worth it.

I also find that fitness inspires me. When I feel healthy and I am running on trails, I get my best ideas. In order to be able to run a 100K, I need to fuel my body with good nutrients.

Aubergine has received plenty of praise in recent years. What is it like running a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star kitchen?

It has been great to have a small, dedicated team. We spend a lot of time together and our guests expect a thoughtful dining experience.

What inspired you to start Rediscovering Coastal Cuisine?

Prior to her diagnosis, she competed in fitness competitions and was known for being supremely strong and athletic.

Her fire for exercise is still there, even during chemotherapy. She visits her gym three or four times a week.

"I want to keep telling myself that I know that I can do this, she said. And that even when I'm not feeling my greatest that I can still do this."

Fosnough said she feels her body slowing down, and nausea and fatigue are a reality. While she got to ring the bell that marks the final round of chemotherapy, she knows the next step is surgery and months of recovery time.

But shell be surrounded by her friends and family.

Such anecdotal evidence is supported by evolving discoveries in the medical literature. A recent study was undertaken by the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine and the Home Base Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, in collaboration with the Naval Medical Center San Diego. Participants in the study were primarily active duty members of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp people battling significant perceived stress or chronic pain. Results of the study suggested that a mind-body program may improve physical and psychological functioning. This is in in accord with what Swet Studio has seen with its members.
