What’s new with the Nutrition Facts label? – Harvard Health Blog – Harvard Health

Posted: at 2:49 pm

The Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 (NLEA) mandated nutrition labeling on most packaged foods. These include canned and frozen foods, breads, cereals, desserts, snacks, beverages, and a variety of other foods that line the aisles of grocery stores. Food labels officially called Nutrition Facts labels are intended to help consumers choose healthy foods. It is the FDAs responsibility to make sure that foods are properly labeled.

Over the years there have been many changes to the initial law, and to the label. The newest version of the food label rolled out on January 1, 2020 for larger food manufacturers; smaller manufacturers have until January 1, 2021 to introduce the new labels.

Heres a rundown of features youll encounter on the new food labels.

The new food label shows servings per container and serving size in a larger font size and a bolder type. Per the NLEA, serving sizes must be based on the Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed (RACCs) that is, the amounts that people are actually eating, not what recommendations suggest they should be eating. The amounts that people eat and drink have changed since 1993, when the previous serving size requirements were published. For example, in 1993 the reference amount used for a serving of soda was 8 ounces; it will now be 12 ounces. A serving of ice cream has also increased, from 1/2 cup to 2/3 cup.

For packages that are between one and two servings, such as a 15-ounce can of soup, the label will now treat the package as a single serving, since people usually consume it at one time.

Certain foods and beverages that are larger than a single serving but could be eaten in one sitting will now display two columns: one showing calories and other nutrients per serving, the other showing the same information for the entire package.

Calories will now be displayed much more prominently on the label. But youll no longer see calories from fat on the food label, since research has shown that the type of fat in a food is more important than the amount of fat.

One of the biggest changes is that the new food labels will specify the amount of added sugar sugars that are added during food processing. Added sugars are a bigger concern than natural sugars, which occur naturally in all foods that contain carbohydrates, including fruits and vegetables, grains, and dairy products.

Research shows that it is difficult to meet nutritional needs while staying within calorie limits if you consume more than 10% of your total daily calories from added sugar (added sugars will appear on the label in both grams and percent daily value). Too much added sugar can also lead to weight gain and other health problems, including diabetes and heart disease.

The FDA definition of fiber, which is used as a guideline for what appears on food labels, includes both naturally occurring fibers and fibers added to foods that show a physiological health benefit. Fiber is naturally present in vegetables, whole grains, fruits, cereal bran, flaked cereal, and flours. In addition, some nondigestible carbohydrates that are added to food also meet the FDAs definition of dietary fiber, and are accounted for in the dietary fiber value on the new food label.

The list of nutrients that appear on the food label has been updated. Vitamin D and potassium will now be required; vitamins A and C will no longer be required, since deficiencies of these vitamins are rare today. Calcium and iron will continue to be required. Manufacturers must declare the actual amount, in addition to percent daily value, of vitamin D, calcium, iron, and potassium. In the old food label, manufacturers only needed to include percent daily value of these nutrients.

Daily values are reference amount of nutrients to consume or not to exceed, and are used to calculate the daily value percentages on the label. This can help the consumer use the nutrition information in the context of a total daily diet. They are based on 2,000 calories, which is a reference number of calories for general advice. Individuals may need less or more than 2,000 calories per day depending upon their specific needs.

The daily values for nutrients like fiber, sodium, vitamin D, and potassium have all been updated based on the most recent research from the Institute of Medicine, and the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Report used in the development of the 20152020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

With its more realistic measure of serving size and emphasis on calories and added sugars, the new food label has the potential to help consumers make healthier food choices.

LUMBERTON A new piece of equipment at Southeastern Regional Medical Center will significantly shorten wait times for a variety of tests.

The BioFire Film Array Torch System will help clinicians make vital decisions regarding admission, isolation, antiviral or antibiotic therapy, and additional diagnostic testing. In a revolutionary change for laboratory testing process, tests that previously took multiple hours, or even days, to complete, can now be performed in a little more than an hour in the analyzer.

The BioFire can run five different panels: blood culture identification, gastrointestinal, meningitis/encephalitis, pneumonia and respiratory. Each panel focuses on separate types of symptoms to narrow down the specific pathogen, whether virus, bacteria or parasite, causing the symptoms, as well as several antibiotic-resistant strains. The machine allows physicians to quickly target the correct pathogen with the correct treatment, which also improves the hospitals antimicrobial stewardship.

Pathologist Dr. Ricky Johnson, the medical director for SRMC Laboratory Services, said that while the analyzer will initially be used for hospital patients only, when all the panels are rolled out, certain outpatient specimens also will be accepted. Patients at other clinics or labs can simply request that their test be sent to the SRMC lab.

The first panel that will be implemented at SRMC will be the blood culture identification panel, which is expected to go live by the end of February. The BCID panel includes 27 of the most common causes of bloodstream infections, such as different strains of streptococcus, different strains of the bacteria family that includes E.coli and salmonella, and yeast. The BCID also will be able to determine the presence of the antimicrobial resistance genes methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant Enterococci, and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. This is important because it will allow clinicians and pharmacists to isolate and treat patients faster than previous methods have allowed.

The BioFire will rapidly reduce the time to identification, allowing for timely and optimal patient treatment and satisfaction, said Erin Hunt, SRMC Microbiology supervisor. The BioFire will also allow us to reduce turnaround time for bacteria identification. Traditional culture methods can take up to 48 hours or longer to identify a pathogen. The BioFire will be able to identify pathogens directly from a patients specimen. This analyzer uses polymerase chain reaction technology to detect the DNA of a virus, bacteria or parasite. Its more versatile, faster, easy to use, and highly specific and sensitive. Antibiotic stewardship, together with the BCID panel, will allow for shortened time to optimal therapy, decreased unnecessary antibiotic use, and decreased time to antimicrobial de-escalation.

From a patients perspective, the time saved with this equipment might be the difference between staying at the hospital overnight for observation or being sent home the same day with the most effective prescription. It also cuts down on the amount of blanket antibiotics that patients will receive while doctors wait for test results, which is an important part of the global effort to slowing the growth of drug-resistant microbes.

The BioFire also decreases the number of send-out tests and allows the lab to do more tests in-house. Several tests, such as norovirus, whooping cough, and walking pneumonia, are currently sent off-site and may take days or weeks for results to return.

Southeastern Regional Medical Cente Microbiology Supervisor Erin Hunt demonstrates how to insert a panel into the BioFire Film Array Torch System.

Nutrition: Clearing up baby carrot confusion – Duluth News Tribune

A column I wrote about carrots brought these letters. And they piqued my curiosity to get more information.

Q: I always wondered about baby carrots. Now that you have confirmed that they are cut regular carrots, I am wondering how the cut and packaging with a fair bit of moisture impacts the nutritional value. Also, do carrots lose nutritional value over time? Thank you.

Q: I must disagree with you on the topic of baby carrots being regular carrots cut to small sizes. If you cut one of the baby carrots in half or bite into it, you will find a very small core inside, which indicates to me that it is not a larger carrot cut into a smaller size. At least that is what I have discovered in the carrots here in central Idaho where I live.

A: There are really two kinds of baby carrots. True baby carrots are those that are harvested early before they reach full maturity. Or they may be a certain breed of miniature carrot. These baby carrots are around 3 to 4 inches long, say growers.

The most common baby carrots that we roll out for vegetable trays and pack in lunches are really baby cut carrots. That is, they are regular size carrots that have been peeled and cut into approximately 2-inch lengths. (I was able to observe this process in a California vegetable plant a few years back.)

Besides being a great way to get kiddos to eat more veggies, growers say this process results in less waste of the carrot since smaller pieces can still be used. Interesting too, that the diameter of these carrots has been made smaller by planting them closer together in the field than traditional carrots.

Nutritionally, baby carrots are similar in nutrients to their larger counterparts. Yet, like other produce, they lose some nutrients and protective phytochemical when they are peeled. There is still plenty of nutritional value in a peeled carrot, however.

Baby carrots are also prone to dry out without their protective skin. Thats why they are packaged in bags that help retain moisture. I mentioned in my previous column that one sign of a dehydrated carrot is the white blush that forms on its surface.

All produce, including carrots, will lose their nutritional value over time. Store your baby carrots in the fridge, keep them moist and use by the Use by date on the package. Thanks for writing.

On Nutrition: Weight loss worrisome for grieving friend that can’t eat – Tulsa World

Dear Dr. Blonz: This may seem like an odd question for someone who writes about nutrition, but how long can a body go without food? A close friend recently experienced a loss, which has caused her to suffer a hard emotional blow. She says that she has no appetite. She hasnt been able to eat anything; when she tries, it results in nausea and her bodys rejection of the food.

As would be expected, she has lost a lot of weight lately and doesnt look healthy to me. F.S. San Jose, California

Dear F.S.: My sincere sympathy to your friend and any affected by the loss. Grief can affect the body in many ways, and while a loss of appetite can be one of them, overeating, ironically, can be another. For more on the bodys reaction to grief, visit b.link/ncbi58.

Addressing your question: Our body is designed to avoid waste, so we shift gears to handle food whenever its consumed. But if nutrients are not provided for an extended period, a sophisticated series of adaptations takes place to pare down the unnecessary use of energy and loss of essential resources. While we may be conscious of why we are no longer eating, the systems in our body are not in that loop.

One adaptation is a scaling-back of the metabolic efforts involved with digestion, which might explain that queasiness or nausea your friend experiences when food is reintroduced. The discomfort tends to pass, but reintroducing food in this scenario should be done gradually, relying on plant foods such as juices, soups, fruits and cooked vegetables.

A lack of food also causes a slowing of the metabolic rate, which brings about a lowering of body temperature. There will be less circulation near the skin surface, which is one of the reasons why people who go without food are easily chilled and may have a sallow look about them.

Friends and family serve as an invaluable source of support, but an inability to eat lasting for days suggests some professional assistance may be needed. In the meantime, given that the body requires more water than any other nutrient, encourage your friend to consume fluids even something like a sports drink, which provides not only fluids, but also electrolytes and calories. To emphasize this important point: We can last only a few days without water.

The human body can survive for many weeks without food, but much depends on ones state of health and the amount of excess energy (i.e., body fat) at the start. I hope that your friend finds the strength to work through her grief and is spared any testing of the limits of her endurance.

Nutritional therapist discusses heart health with Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce members

While it may not be a cure-all solution for physical or mental health problems, nutritional therapist Kate Dodson believes nutritional therapy can create or repair the foundation of the body.

I prefer to work with people who are 40 and over who are just starting to slow down and think that their life is kind of going downhill because they are getting older, she said. Thats a bunch of crap and thats what I show to people, how to take charge of their health and find ways to actually get back on track.

For American Heart Month the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce Community Health Committee invited Dodson, owner of nutritional therapy provider Houston Nutritional Therapy, to speak about heart health and overall nutritional education and advice. Nutritional therapy is an evidence-based approach to health and wellness with an individualized approach including modifying diets and implementing supplements.

Its transformative because it allows the body to heal itself, she said. I dont heal anybody. I help you to help your own body to do the healing. It has been perfectly designed to do. It works well in conjunction with other healthcare modalities.

Dodson said she discovered nutritional therapy after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a chronic auto-immune disease affecting the brain and spine, since the age of 25 and finding no solutions outside of clinical medicine. After finding the Wahls Protocol, a diet created by Terry Wahls, who also had MS, Dodson said her MS has been in remission, verified by her neurologist, for four years after adjusting her diet and nutrition habits.

My eyes, my optic nerves, have healed, Dodson said. Im in complete remission. I cant say its cured, because its (a chronic) auto immune disease My neurologist said we have to agree to disagree.

Dodson said she has not taken medicine for her MS in four years since she has stopped feeling the symptoms of MS, but is not technically cured of her MS according to her doctor.

According to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, individualized nutrition and methods like the Wahls Protocol can aid patients with going into remission, which can last weeks, months or years. A study on MS and nutrition from 2015 found that nutritional intervention could alleviate inflammatory effects of MS.

Dodson discussed the importance of hydration, fatty acids, blood sugar and minerals. Dodson said a high sugar diet, even if fruit comprises the majority of it, can be damaging to blood vessels due to how coarse fructose is, which can lead to blood sugar imbalance and can cause inflammation.

It was described as taking a Brillo pad to the inside of your blood vessels when you have a high sugar diet, she said. Blood sugar imbalances lead to insulin resistance; weve all heard of that. That compromises mineral intake.

Hydration is key as well, Dodson said. Dodson challenged attendees to drink half of their body weight in water daily to promote better hydration of the body.

Your body cant heal without good hydration, she said. Dehydration causes the vascular system to actually close some of the vessels. This, I think, is part of what leads to some of the diabetic myopathy. First, youve got the high sugar diet causing glycation, causing the cells to clump together and block things off.

Amino acids and fatty acids are needed for proper heart health in order to manage digestion and inflammation, respectively, Dodson said, which some medications can affect negatively.

There are an awful lot of people who are taking medications that stop their stomach acid, she said. That is stopping a symptom of imbalance. Its not actually treating the imbalance. The good thing is that it stops pain, everybody wants that. But we want to make sure that while were doing that, were also looking at what is the root cause.

Houston Nutritional Therapy, located at 13302 Grant Rd Building B, Ste. 7, Cypress, serves the Greater Houston area with nutritional therapy and the Restart Program, meant to regulate and balance diets through individualized plans, and corporate services. Dodson said the process is different for every patient, including those with food allergies and other restrictions.

Nutritional therapy is science-based, it is measurable, its a sustainable lifestyle, she said. There is no one perfect diet. There are a lot of good diets that can help you and every one of us is different.

If he sees it with his own eyes, he will understand: how gender informed the content and delivery of a maternal nutrition intervention in Burkina…

Posted: at 2:49 pm

A growing body of literature urges policymakers, practitioners and scientists to consider gender in the design and evaluation of health interventions. We report findings from formative research to develop and refine an mHealth maternal nutrition intervention in Nouna, Burkina Faso, one of the worlds most resource-poor settings. Gender was not an initial research focus, but emerged as highly salient during data collection, and thus guided lines of inquiry as the study progressed. We collected data in two stages, first using focus group discussions (FGD; n=8) and later using FGDs (n=2), interviews (n=30) and observations of intervention delivery (n=30). Respondents included pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and Close-to-Community (CTC) providers, who execute preventative and curative tasks at the community level. We applied Morgan et al.s gender framework to examine intervention content (what a gender-sensitive nutrition programme should entail) and delivery (how a gender-sensitive programme should be administered). Mothers emphasized that although they are often the focus of nutrition interventions, they are not empowered to make nutrition-based decisions that incur costs. They do, however, wield some control over nutrition-related tasks such as farming and cooking. Mothers described how difficult it is to consider only ones own children during meal preparation (which is communal), and all respondents described how nutrition-related requests can spark marital strife. Many respondents agreed that involving men in nutrition interventions is vital, despite mens perceived disinterest. CTC providers and others described how social norms and gender roles underpin perceptions of CTC providers and dictate with whom they can speak within homes. Mothers often prefer female CTC providers, but these health workers require spousal permission to work and need to balance professional and domestic demands. We recommend involving male partners in maternal nutrition interventions and engaging and supporting a broader cadre of female CTC providers in Burkina Faso. The Author(s) 2020. Confusion Over Trump’s Public Charge Rule Means More Immigrant Families Are Going Without Food – Mother Jones

Posted: at 2:49 pm

This story was originally published by the Food and Environment Reporting Network.

Across the country, fear and confusion about the Trump administrations public charge rule has prompted immigrants and their families to drop out or stay out of public nutrition programs, even when they are eligible, according to immigrant and anti-hunger groups. Enrollment in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and school food programs has been affected, although they are not covered by the new rule, say the advocates.

The rules and its previous leaked drafts have created chilling effects for populations not technically targeted by it, said a report by the National Immigration Law Center. The report was based on interviews of service providers, such as lawyers, physicians and outreach workers, in 11 states from California to Texas and Florida. It estimated that as many as 26 million people would be chilled from health, nutrition and housing programs because of misinformation about the rule.

Officials in New York City said a city-wide decline in WIC applications accelerated last year in neighborhoods with the highest number of non-citizens, reported news site AMNY. This is a harmful rule because it is sowing in confusion, it is creating fear, said city Social Services Commissioner Steven Banks. In June 2019, the city said many more eligible non-citizen New Yorkers are either withdrawing from or not enrolling in SNAP. The rate of decline for eligible non-citizens is double that of eligible citizens.

The rule is directed toward a relatively small number of people: non-citizens in the United States who seek a green card, who want to extend their stay in the country, or who apply for a change of status. Their applications for residency or entry can be rejected if authorities decide they are likely to rely on federal support. In the past, that meant welfare or long-term institutional care. The Department of Homeland Security said the public charge test now includes use of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, most forms of Medicaid, and some housing assistance programs as well as cash welfare and Supplemental Security Income for more than 12 months in total in a 36-month period.

Nonetheless, the rule has affected a much larger group of people. The chilling effect goes beyond SNAP, said the anti-hunger Food Research and Action Center. The rule has contributed to immigrant families forgoing nutrition assistance for which they are eligible. Families are reluctant or refuse to seek benefits for children or relatives who are US citizens out of concern that more restrictive immigration rules will be issued or that legal use of nutrition programs will be viewed adversely by DHS.

The vast majority of non-citizen enrolled in SNAP are refugees, asylees and legal permanent residents, all of which are excluded from the public charge rule. Likewise, US citizen children are not subject to DHS public charge determinations and the use of public benefits by a child or other family member cannot be considered against the applicant, said FRAC.

The White House said the rule will protect hardworking American taxpayers, safeguard welfare programs for truly needy Americans, reduce the federal deficit, and re-establish the fundamental legal principle that newcomers to our society should be financially self-reliant.

What Is the DASH Diet? – Here’s What You Can and Can’t Eat on the Dash Diet – GoodHousekeeping.com

Posted: at 2:49 pm

While it didn't enjoy the same spotlight this January, the DASH diet was crowned as one of the best diets in the United States in 2019 by U.S. News and World Report, putting it on the fast-track to cause buzz on Instagram feeds all year long. In fact, the DASH diet had earned this distinction for most of the 2010s, but unlike many of the other diets we've seen percolating in our social media feeds for the last few years, the DASH diet actually has overwhelming support from the medical community largely in part because it was developed in the 1990s by a team of researchers funded by the National Institute of Health.

Believe it or not, scientists first created this diet plan in response to the rise of cardiovascular disease in the United States, and many doctors only speak about the specifics of the DASH diet with their patients if high blood pressure is a factor for them. The DASH diet targets high sources of sodium and artery-clogging sources of fat to empower dieters to better their own heart health, but in the process, it targets some ingredients that some experts may find controversial.

Stefani Sassos, MS, RDN, CSO, CDN, a registered dietitian within the Good Housekeeping Institute, says that while the Mediterranean diet is worthy of it's "best" title this year, the DASH diet remains one of her favorite picks of all time. If you're dealing with elevated blood pressure or other cardiovascular risks, there's no question about it; but even if you're looking to lose weight before hitting the beach this summer, the DASH diet may be safer for you compared to the keto diet or Whole30.

Here's everything you need to know about the DASH diet, including what you can (and can't eat), how it could help you eat healthier and lose weight, and how to get started.

Sassos has a clinical background in treating cancer patients in the New York area, but also has found herself thrust into understanding the ins-and-outs of the DASH diet as heart disease is actually the number one killer in the U.S., she says. "I had quite a few patients who passed away from heart disease rather than their actual cancer," she explains. "There's a huge sodium issue in America, and the DASH diet is specifically known to fight this trend."

Ginger Meyer, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD, a registered dietitian specializing in sports dietetics within the University of Missouri Health Care system, says the DASH diet successfully lowers blood pressure in patients with hypertension by targeting dietary sources of fat and largely scaling back or eliminating red meat and sugar altogether. In studies since its inception, the DASH program can further lower blood pressure if sodium is also targeted, she says.

"Some may experience lowering of blood pressure in a few weeks," Meyer explains. "Other important lifestyle factors include achieving or maintaining a healthy body weight, participating in two hours and 30 minutes of moderately intense physical activity each week, and limiting alcohol consumption."

This diet, unlike others, isn't truly designed to be used for the short term. Results vary on a case by case basis, Meyer says, but this approach to eating is often recommended for many years before true results are seen and doctors relax on restricting certain items.

Those following the program aren't given a particular meal plan, but follow general guidelines. Here's everything you'll be able to enjoy on the DASH diet:

Sassos says this diet plan is most in-line with what a regular, healthy lifestyle should look for most a dietary routine that consists of 2,000 calories each day (or a higher or lower caloric intake recommended by your healthcare provider) consisting of wholesome ingredients. She says the diet recommends an adequate intake of non-fat and low-fat dairy products, two to three servings a day, as well as the appropriate servings of whole grains each day.

She believes that the best DASH diets are those that restrict sodium, as high-sodium diets can cause issues for otherwise-healthy patients. "When you go out to a restaurant, so many of us are drowning in salt, but this approach fixes that," she says.

Here's what you should avoid and limit as much as possible:

These items shouldn't come as too much of a shock: they're all high in fat, sodium, and calories. Not to mention, they're often highly calorically dense, but not in actual nutrients. "The DASH plan is rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, fiber, and limits saturated fat, total fat, and cholesterol," Meyer explains.

Here's the catch the DASH diet wasn't actually created to promote weight loss. Some health experts believe that asking those that don't suffer with elevated blood pressure levels to restrict their sodium intake could promote unwarranted restrictions elsewhere (why restrict something if you're consuming normal levels, right?).

But pro-DASH-diet supporters like Meyer and Sassos acknowledge that the average meal plan based on this diet inevitably promotes weight loss for most people. "Although the DASH diet was not designed to promote weight reduction, this eating plan can be followed at a lower calorie level for weight loss, and as you replace high-calorie, high-fat foods with low-calorie vegetables and fruits, weight will likely trend down," Meyer explains.

For the best weight loss results, both experts agree: you'll need to incorporate exercise into your routine. Plus, a 2010 clinical study found that, in a trial, people who exercise while enjoying the DASH diet were more likely to lower their blood pressure compared to those who didn't.

You'll need to consult your doctor or a registered dietitian before you make any radical changes to your diet. If you've determined that you should work on your blood pressure levels, don't jump to change everything just yet. "Keep a food diary for several days and identify ways you could gradually increase servings of vegetables, fruits and whole grains," Meyer says.

If you're looking for particular meal plans or more tips for crafting DASH-friendly meals, both Sassos and Meyer recommend resources provided by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), which include an illustrated guide of the recommended number of servings on each food group by calorie level and serving size.

The UNLTD Wellness Center provides clients with easy state-of-the-art technology and non medical machines intended to help the mind, body, and soul to perform at its optimum. Eli added, Through bio-hacking we are also able to help address those who suffer from depression, anxiety, addiction, trauma, PTSD, stress and many more. Overall wellness and anti aging are immediate benefits of this healing modality.

UNLTD Red Light Therapy, also known as the REDJuvenator, helps to relieve pain, reduce appearance of ... [+] fine lines, wrinkles as well as hyper pigmentation. It also speeds up the healing process.

An initial walk through of various healing modalities and machines felt like visiting the NASA satellite office. At the back of what seemed like an activity hall for events or seminars were private rooms for counseling. My advocacy is to help those who suffer from traumas or other conditions such as ADHD, PTSD or even Autism, said Eli. I am especially dedicated to helping children. As the first certified practitioner of Anat Baniel Method in the Philippines, Eli is committed to helping kids with special needs to tap into the unlimited potential of the brain to heal, recover and develop.

Eli Abela facilitates the Anat Baneil Method the help remap signals that brain and body use to ... [+] communicate.

On one end of spacious and airy center were cubicles dedicated to NeurOptimal Feedback Training. This is an amazing bio-hacking tool that we use to train the brain. There are even patients who suffer from Alzheimer's or stroke whose conditions have improved dramatically explained Eli.

Neuroptimal Neurofeedback or brain train to help teach the brain to become resilient and flexible.

Probes are attached to various parts of the head which transmit or train the central nervous system to so that it can better respond to stress, anxiety, trauma and even feelings of panic or depression. During treatment patients will be asked to wear headphones to listen in and view a short film showing. At this time, they are encouraged to relax. Be yourself and do what you would usually do. You can even text or go on social media, instructed Eli.

Brain Train happens while a patient watches a short film. Probes attached to the head send out ... [+] signals that teach the brain how to best respond to stress, trauma, depression, addiction, anxiety, sleeplessness and many more.

One need not suffer from a severe condition to benefit from this modality. Brain training, as it is also referred to, is also used by peak performing athletes, artists, and business people to achieve and maintain their edge. Post session, the mind felt invigoratingly awoke. Fog or any semblance of fuzziness had cleared out. Focus was, to say the least, razor sharp.

Exercise with Oxygen therapy significantly increases energy and helps to boost cellular recovery.

An (EWOT) Exercise with Oxygen Therapy area nearby the lounge space seemed particularly interesting. It featured a stationary bike and a massive oxygen reservoir attached to a face mask. This is like your hyperbaric chamber but more intense. Imagine getting that endorphin rush from a workout plus a direct dose of pure oxygen at every inhale. described Eli. After your ride, I will give you hydrogen water for an added boost. Upon mounting the bike, you wear the mask would open air ways to pure oxygen. Intervals are set for seconds of pure oxygen and sprints with a deficit in oxygen.

EWOT is ideal for significantly increasing energy as oxygen is essential for creating making cells work at its optimum. This in turn boosts immunity, ability to recover and cellular health. What this means is apart from feeling like you had just woken up from your best slumber ever, you also get the anti aging benefits of infusing your body pure oxygen. We have a lot of athletes who come in for these treatments because it helps them to perform better and also recover faster, disclosed Eli.

Near Infrared Sauna Therapy is phenomenal at detoxifying at the cellular level, going up to 9 inches ... [+] beneath skin's surface.

Infrared Sauna Therapy for 25 minutes was suggested for detoxifying at the cellular level. Near infrared saunas is most efficient at inducing cellular detoxification as it penetrates up to nine inches beneath skin surface. Thats basically the entire body. This treatment is also ideal for muscle and tissue recovery as well as overall healing. Its the best after a workout especially or for days when you are feeling sore, commented Eli.

Red Light Therapy at the UNLTD Biohacking Recovery Wellness Center to help with anti-aging, pain ... [+] relief, skin and muscle recovery as well as reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The Red Light Treatment room was like walking into a spaceship built in Mars. Conceived by Leanne Venier, this treatment utilizes red light wavelengths which affect bodily cells on a biochemical level by increasing Mitochrondian functions. This, in turn, increases cellular energy which basically allows the body to heal and rejuvenate faster. Benefits of Red Light Therapy that make it an immediate favorite in the center include: anti-aging, pain relief, reduced appearance of wrinkles and hyper pigmentation as well as skin and muscle recovery. Inside what I call the red room, you basically lied down, doze off for about half an hour and emerge feeling brand new! I love to get my dose of red light every time I lack sleep, have soreness from workouts or simply need a quick skin boost.

UNLTD Biohacking Recovery Wellness Center is the first and only healing center in the Philippines ... [+] focused in bio-hacking healing modalities.

A day at UNLTD was like scratching the surface to discovering the power of the mind and body to heal itself. Eli, who herself makes it a point to be around to explain and share her expertise, was a refreshing energy to be around. She also offered a wealth of information that told me to make more time for days of relaxation, restoration, and most importantly, reversing the aging process. We want to harness what you already have inside of youinside your bodyso you can detox, energize, repair and live your best life. That means no medications, no side effects, no chemicals. The enthusiasm and energy she brings to her advocacy and the center is example of the miracles that bio-hacking can bring to a life. Asked where she finds the energy to run the center and remain eternally youthful and radiant, she responded: Bio-hacking, of course. That, good energy, pure intentions, and a mindset for sharing in this knowledge with anyone who shares in the same quest for living the best life.

The CEO of Deciem Believes Beauty Is About Being Human – The Cut

Nicola Kilner is the epitome of composure. The CEO of Deciems confident air and gentle lilting voice both exude an affable positivity.

Its likely what drew Deciems creator Brandon Truaxe to her. Well, that and her brains, and her infinite energy. The two met when she was a beauty buyer at Boots and he was a co-founder of Toronto skin-care brand Indeed Labs.

My role was to look at all the new things happening, and thats how I met Brandon, she explains. It was like falling in love, because he was such an inspiration.

The two soon left their respective jobs to create what would ultimately become Deciem. Brandon was so bold and brave with what he was doing, says the Sheffield, England, native. When we started showing our concept around, a few people said to us, Itll never work, customers will never understand it. They said we needed to organize the lines by category (anti-aging, brightening) and Brandon said, No. Were doing what were doing. He was always happy to challenge the status quo.

Deciem launched in 2013 with three brands under its umbrella and the tagline the abnormal beauty company. Consumers gravitated toward the advanced science of NIOD and appreciated the surprisingly low prices of The Ordinary. In 2017, Este Lauder made an undisclosed investment in the company. As the company grew, so did Truaxes erratic behavior, eventually threatening to close the company down. In 2018, Lauder filed a lawsuit, and an Ontario judge ruled that Truaxe be removed from his post. Three months later, he fell (or, quite possibly, jumped) to his death from his Toronto apartment.

What we went through last year was hell, and it shouldnt be in vain, says Kilner. Mental health is still a taboo, and we actually dont understand what the early signs are. We need to understand what causes addiction and mental health. We want to start the conversation that its okay to not be okay.

In the meantime, her steady hand currently oversees five brands, with three on deck and many more in the pipeline.

Our brands are about so much more than formulations, says Kilner. People want to see the world in a more human way, which is why were transparent, and why well never use models in our ads. Beauty shouldnt be sold on fear.

Kilner spoke with the Cut about her frustration with marketing scare tactics, the importance of comfort, and why shell never go without mascara.

Whats your definition of beauty? Its hard to give a definition of what I thinkbeauty is, but I can tell you what I find beautiful. I find beauty in the vulnerable, human aspects of life and people. The nights when Ive wrapped up an intense day at work and get to go home and enjoy my baby daughter, when theres a funny typo in an email, or learning more about everyone at Deciem beyond just what they bring to the table work-wise. What inspires them?Who are they when they leave work? I love the small, intimate human moments that are so often hidden or disguised. You will find this slogan in our stores because I really believe its true: Beauty Is Being Human.

What do you think when you hear the term clean beauty? Frustration. These words dont have any sort of substantial, enforceable backing behind them. Its even more upsetting because labels such as clean typically target consumers fears and worries, and inauthentically so, in order to take advantage of their concerns for profit. The way the industry has taken the legitimate concerns of our audiences, and created these deceptive marketing practices to prey on their fears, just leaves me with a lot of frustration. It further muddies an already confusing industry.

Where, if anywhere, in your beauty (or life) routine are you not quite that clean, green, or sustainable? My role involves a lot of travel, and Im always conscious of the environmental impact. We do invest in carbon offsets as a company, but its always on my mind.

Please fill in the blank as it pertains to something about your beauty or wellness routine: I think about_______ a lot. Deciems people and legacy.

What is the opposite of beautiful? Being mean. I think it goes against our true human nature, and is one of the ugliest human qualities.

What is your morning skin-care routine? I dont tend to cleanse in the morning, so will use the opportunity to use a mask or treatment such as our Flavanone Mud or Sanskrit Saponins. I will always use our Copper Amino Isolate Serum, but the rest tends to change a lot as my role involves trialling many of our new concepts from the lab.

Whats the last beauty product you use every night? NIOD Hydration Vaccine.

What aspect of your beauty routine tends to be neglected? My nails! Having a 1-year-old means short and tidy is the only option.

What, if anything, is usually on your lips? If Im going out or know I will be on camera for any reason, I always use our Lip Bio-Lipid Concentrate from NIOD. It plumps and smooths out my lips for the entire day, and I find makes a noticeable difference in how healthy they look, too. On a typical day, though, I will use The Ordinary Squalane to keep them hydrated.

What shade, if any, is usually on your toes and/or hands?Fingers are always natural a clear color, if any. On my toes in the summer I like a bright pink from Zoya.

What makeup item would you never skip? Because Im fair, it would have to be mascara. Benefits Theyre Real is my go-to.

Facial cleanser of choice: The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser. I love the end-of-day feeling as the balm melts into my skin.

Fragrance of choice: Avestan. It has a very personal connection to Brandon.

Bath or shower?Preferred bath/shower product: Shower to get clean, bath to relax. My preferred bath product is from our upcoming Loopha, a line of bath and body with experiential fragrances. But its not out yet.

Most relied on hair product or tool? T3 Volumizing Hot Rollers. My hair is quite fine so I find it an easy way to add volume.

What beauty product is always in your travel bag? Hand Chemistry!

What beauty item do you usually forget to pack? Hair styling products.

What discontinued product do you mourn? Stemm Shampoo.

What beauty product still needs to be invented? Its currently being worked on in our lab

What was your first beauty product obsession? Blusher, which I applied far too heavily in the totally wrong shade. I was probably 15.

Daily carry-all: Burberry backpack with my initials on. I received it as a wedding gift.

How do you like your bed? Made, with Rivolta Carmignani linens. I once stripped our bed at the Rosewood Hotel in London to find out what sheets they use, and have kept my own set ever since

How do you like your living room? Homey, with lots of photos of family both by blood and chosen.

What do you splurge on? Comfort. During an Elle shoot last spring, the incredibly talented Schanel Bakkouche pulled a few Bonpoint pieces for my daughter Mila. Since then, I find myself splurging on the sweetest cashmere baby jumpers. I need a matching mum size!

What do you scrimp on? Water. In countries where tap water is drinkable, I believe packaged water is an unnecessary driver of waste.

What is your classic uniform? Mum uniform: baggy jeans, slouchy sweats, and trainers. CEO uniform: usually a floaty dress. We recently did a partnership in North America with The Ordinary x Club Monaco and I lived in their knit dresses this winter. I start pulling out my Realisation Par, Reformation, and Yoli and Otis when spring hits. At home I love the Re/Done jeans as theyre made from vintage Levis and given a new life that happens to come with a great fit. Trainers are Everlane or Gucci.

What shoe are you usually wearing? Grenson Nanette boots.

Current favorite fashion item in your closet: My favourite things to invest in are jewelry, which I hope one day Ill pass onto my daughter.

What color is your usual fashion pop of color? My wardrobe is very muted in tones something I would like to change!

If you were a makeup shade, what shade would that be? A coral blush. Its a happy color that imitates the innate human action of smiling.

When you check into a hotel room, whats the first thing you do? Look to see if there is a view. Then read the food service menu. I rarely eat in the room, but I love reading menus.

What is your personal definition of misery? Living in a state of fear or worry. That is why it is vital for me to make Deciem the best company in the world to work for. I want everyone at the company to feel like they are a part of our family secure and in the best care possible.

What is your personal definition of glee? Being in a state of creativity and inspiration.

What would the name of your autobiography be? Kind Is the New Cool.

Who would you like to star as you in the film adaptation? Blake Lively.

Favorite smell? Gurneys Montauk in the off-season. The smell at the beach is so briny and crisp, I wish I could bottle it.

What do you think Pantones color of 2020 should be, and please explain why? I believe Classic Blue is a perfect choice, as it was one of Brandons favorite colors.

What do you most often disagree with others about? How to run a business. We do everything very abnormally at Deciem, and it works for us. Our model doesnt make sense to everyone, but it does for us. We operate with kindness, common sense, integrity, and transparency.

What must you adjust when you see it done incorrectly? The way our products face in store!

Comfort food: Fries with ketchup and mayo.

Vice: Diet Coke.

Most impressive dish you make: Lasagna.

What do you foresee as the top beauty trends for 2020? Transparency. I think the shift in the industry has gotten so great that no brand will be able to continue, let alone grow, without becoming hyper transparent about their formulations and business practices especially when it comes to the environment. I think well see a lot of new recycling programs, overhauled and innovative new sustainable packaging from many brands, and a new focus on ingredients and percentages being at the forefront of skin-care marketing.

What product in your brands product domain is misunderstood and should be a best-seller? NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Serum 2:1. This product features freshly assembled Copper Peptides, which in my opinion will be one of the next great skincare ingredients that everyone wants to get their hands on expect to see more products hit the market with them. Copper Peptides essentially put your skin into a rapid state of repair and help it carry out all of its natural functions better, so this product improves many skin conditions.

What product in your brands product domain is currently your favorite (understanding that this could change all the time)? The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser. Its one of our newest launches from The Ordinary and currently the only cleanser in the line, so Ive been giving it a lot of attention lately. I just love how extremely simple, gentle, and affective it is.

Not to get too philosophical, but what do you want? To make the world a better place. I know that seems cheesy, but it is true. I think about my daughter Mila, and what the world will be like when she is grown. Ive been given an incredible opportunity to make an impact through Deciem, and I take that very seriously. While we cant change the whole word, we can change the beauty industry, how our company operates, and impact the nearly one thousand people that work with us. When all is said and done, I want to look back and have had Deciem change the industry for the better to be kinder and more real.

The best beauty treatments trending now By Laurel Sutherland | Feb. 29, 2020

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and lets face it theres no beholder as critical as the one scrutinizing herself in the mirror every morning. If youve got something standing in the way of greeting that gal with an approving smile, dont beat yourself up; do something about it. Northern Express scoured the region to find the latest and greatest cosmetic treatments trending now, and what we found is this: From fine hair to fine lines, theres a new fix available and the pros and people trying it swear its better than whats come before.

Brow Lamination Alchemy Esthetics, Traverse City $70, 45 minutes Expertly styled and tinted no-maintenance eyebrows for 1 month+Cosmetic leaders on the East and West coasts are loving brow lamination, and its finally hit the northern Michigan beauty scene at Alchemy Esthetics. This game-changing technique delivers more defined, lifted, fuller eyebrows without the pain or permanence of micro-blading, or tattooing, or the frequent upkeep pens and brushes require. Think of it as an eyebrow perm. Heres how it works: Eyebrow hairs are given a fuller look through repositioning, tinting, and lamination. Within a 45 minute session, eyebrows are transformed to appear slick, fuller, and shiny. Laminated brows remain perfectly defined, lifted, and tinted for six to 8 weeks.

Natural Beaded Hair Extensions Radiance Salon and Spa, Petoskey $1,200$1,300 for initial application, 2+ hours Luxurious, seamless hair extensions for fuller, natural-looking hairIf youve ever dreamt of having more voluminous hair, natural beaded hair extensions could be your magic beauty elixir and Radiance is the only salon north of Fenton licensed and certified to provide them. These 100 percent human hair extensionsrequire no glue, so they are non-damaging to natural hair. Instead, the extensions are carefully woven into your natural hair. The beaded design and weaving technique distributes the weight of the extensions so that they work especially well with fine hair. Since the extensions can be dyed, thecost and treatment time depends on your custom coloring needs. Depending on care, you can expect them to last 9 months to a year with lifts every 6-8 weeks. (Maintenance lifts vary in cost, from less than $200 to more than $500, depending on the number of extensions you require.)

Mei Zen Beautiful Person Facial Rejuvenation (pictured above)| Kara Schaub L.Ac, MSTOM at Imagine Health, Traverse City $150 per one-hour treatment, twice a week for five weeks, A natural and effective alternative to Botox. Goodbye chemicals: hello needles. When you imagine acupuncture with 80 needles, you might think torture chamber. However, Schaub tells us that many of her patients fall asleep during this trademarked acupuncture protocol. During the treatment sessions, about 80 needles are placed in apex points across the face. Needles may also be placed elsewhere in the body to balance energy. The needles are situated carefully in the dermis to create micro traumas that stimulate skin to produce more collagen and elastin. This natural facelift delivers reduced inflammation and fine lines, as well as glowing, hydrated skin. Beyond those perks, Karas patients report a boost in mood and cosmetic results that last for two to six years. Ideal maintenance is one treatment per month.

Deluxe HydraFacial| Spa Grand Traverse, Acme Township $200$300, 2580 minutes Clinical-quality anti-aging and hydrating facial meets spa relaxation blissThe HydraFacial is like getting five facials in one session. Go for the facial renewal, stay for the amenities of Spa Grand Traverse (think sauna, hot tub, hot tea, and a soft robe and slippers). In addition to the facial, the spa staff will educate you on your before and after photos and counsel you on the best skin care regimen for your skin. When you leave, you will immediately see reduced inflammation and fine lines, smaller pores, and an undeniably dewy glow that lasts for six to eight weeks.

Plasma Pen Wrinkle Treatment | Great Lakes Plastic Surgery Center, Traverse City $350$4,000, 30 minutes to 3+ hours, depending on wrinkle treatment needs An incredibly effective, non-surgical, clinical wrinkle-reduction treatment This new, non-surgical approach to treating wrinkles is hyper-focused on your individual wrinkle treatment needs. Clinicians use a handheld Plasma Pen device that converts electrical energy into electrostatic energy to deliver targeted fibroblasts to your dermis. Those fibroblasts stimulate collagen and elastin production and promote skin strengthening and lifting. The results are an immediate and dramatically reduced appearance of wrinkles. Note: It is not uncommon to experience some swelling and scabs for 1 to 5 days following the procedure, so plan accordingly. The clinicians at GLPSC suggest a full consultation before the procedure to assess how your unique complexion might be impacted by the treatment (e.g. darker skin tones may hyper pigment). Treatment results are virtually immediate and last about three years.

Top 10 Strategic Technology Breakthroughs That Will Transform Our Lives – Analytics Insight

Posted: at 2:48 pm

The world is surrounded by technology technology that makes our jobs easy, the technology that makes our commute easy, the technology that makes out communication easy and so on. Hence, such advancements have turned into a boon to our lives while easing out numerous works that would conventionally take a long time to complete. Now that we look back we see so many new technologies have taken over the world that its nearly impossible to enlist them at once. And how further advancements will impact our lives in new ways we cannot even imagine.

MIT has drafted a list of top 10 strategic technology breakthroughs that will revolutionize our lives in the coming years.

An internet based on quantum physics will soon enable inherently secure communication. A team led by Stephanie Wehner, at Delft University of Technology, is building a network connecting four cities in the Netherlands entirely by means of quantum technology. Messages sent over this network will be unhackable.

The Delft network will be the first to transmit information between cities using quantum techniques from end to end.The technology relies on a quantum behavior of atomic particles called entanglement. Entangled photons cant be covertly read without disrupting their content.

Heres a definition of a hopeless case: a child with a fatal disease so exceedingly rare that not only is there no treatment, theres not even anyone in a lab coat studying it. Too rare to care, goes the saying.

Thats about to change, thanks to new classes of drugs that can be tailored to a persons genes. If an extremely rare disease is caused by a specific DNA mistakeas several thousand aretheres now at least a fighting chance for a genetic fix through hyper-personalized medicine. One such case is that of Mila Makovec, a little girl suffering from a devastating illness caused by a unique genetic mutation, who got a drug manufactured just for her. Her case made the New England Journal of Medicine in October after doctors moved from a readout of her genetic error to treatment in just a year. They called the drug milasen, after her. The treatment hasnt cured Mila. But it seems to have stabilized her condition: it has reduced her seizures, and she has begun to stand and walk with assistance.

Milas treatment was possible because creating a gene medicine has never been faster or had a better chance of working. The new medicines might take the form of gene replacement, gene editing, or antisense (the type Mila received), a sort of molecular eraser, which erases or fixes erroneous genetic messages. What the treatments have in common is that they can be programmed, in digital fashion and with digital speed, to correct or compensate for inherited diseases, letter for DNA letter.

Last June Facebook unveiled a global digital currency called Libra. The idea triggered a backlash and Libra may never launch, at least not in the way it was originally envisioned. But its still made a difference: just days after Facebooks announcement, an official from the Peoples Bank of China implied that it would speed the development of its own digital currency in response. Now China is poised to become the first major economy to issue a digital version of its money, which it intends as a replacement for physical cash.

The first wave of a new class of anti-aging drugs has begun human testing. These drugs wont let you live longer (yet) but aim to treat specific ailments by slowing or reversing a fundamental process of aging.

The drugs are called senolyticsthey work by removing certain cells that accumulate as we age. Known as senescent cells, they can create low-level inflammation that suppresses normal mechanisms of cellular repair and creates a toxic environment for neighboring cells.

The universe of molecules that could be turned into potentially life-saving drugs is mind-boggling in size: researchers estimate the number at around 1060. Thats more than all the atoms in the solar system, offering virtually unlimited chemical possibilitiesif only chemists could find the worthwhile ones.

Now machine-learning tools can explore large databases of existing molecules and their properties, using the information to generate new possibilities. This AI enabled technology could make it faster and cheaper to discover new drug candidates.

Satellites that can beam a broadband connection to internet terminals. As long as these terminals have a clear view of the sky, they can deliver the internet to any nearby devices. SpaceX alone wants to send more than 4.5 times more satellites into orbit this decade than humans have ever launched since Sputnik.

These mega-constellations are feasible because we have learned how to build smaller satellites and launch them more cheaply. During the space shuttle era, launching a satellite into space cost roughly US$24,800 per pound. A small communications satellite that weighed four tons cost nearly $200 million to fly up.

Quantum computers store and process data in a way completely different from the ones were all used to. In theory, they could tackle certain classes of problems that even the most powerful classical supercomputer imaginable would take millennia to solve, like breaking todays cryptographic codes or simulating the precise behavior of molecules to help discover new drugs and materials.

There have been working quantum computers for several years, but its only under certain conditions that they outperform classical ones, and in October Google claimed the first such demonstration of quantum supremacy. A computer with 53 qubitsthe basic unit of quantum computationdid a calculation in a little over three minutes that, by Googles reckoning, would have taken the worlds biggest supercomputer 10,000 years, or 1.5 billion times as long. IBM challenged Googles claim, saying the speedup would be a thousandfold at best; even so, it was a milestone, and each additional qubit will make the computer twice as fast.

AI has a problem: in the quest to build more powerful algorithms, researchers are using ever greater amounts of data and computing power and relying on centralized cloud services. This not only generates alarming amounts of carbon emissions but also limits the speed and privacy of AI applications.

But a countertrend of tiny AI is changing that. Tech giants and academic researchers are working on new algorithms to shrink existing deep-learning models without losing their capabilities. Meanwhile, an emerging generation of specialized AI chips promises to pack more computational power into tighter physical spaces, and train and run AI on far less energy.

In 2020, the US government has a big task: collect data on the countrys 330 million residents while keeping their identities private. The data is released in statistical tables that policymakers and academics analyze when writing legislation or conducting research. By law, the Census Bureau must make sure that it cant lead back to any individuals.

But there are tricks to de-anonymize individuals, especially if the census data is combined with other public statistics.

So the Census Bureau injects inaccuracies, or noise, into the data. It might make some people younger and others older, or label some white people as black and vice versa while keeping the totals of each age or ethnic group the same. The more noise you inject, the harder the de-anonymization becomes.

Differential privacy is a mathematical technique that makes this process rigorous by measuring how much privacy increases when noise is added. The method is already used by Apple and Facebook to collect aggregate data without identifying particular users.

Ten days after Tropical Storm Imelda began flooding neighborhoods across the Houston area last September, a rapid-response research team announced that climate change almost certainly played a role.

The group, World Weather Attribution, had compared high-resolution computer simulations of worlds where climate change did and didnt occur. In the former, the world we live in, the severe storm was as much as 2.6 times more likelyand up to 28% more intense.

Earlier this decade, scientists were reluctant to link any specific event to climate change. But many more extreme-weather attribution studies have been done in the last few years, and rapidly improving tools and techniques have made them more reliable and convincing.

This has been made possible by a combination of advances. For one, the lengthening record of detailed satellite data is helping us understand natural systems. Also, increased computing power means scientists can create higher-resolution simulations and conduct many more virtual experiments.

These and other improvements have allowed scientists to state with increasing statistical certainty that yes, global warming is often fueling more dangerous weather events.

By disentangling the role of climate change from other factors, the studies are telling us what kinds of risks we need to prepare for, including how much flooding to expect and how severe heatwaves will get as global warming becomes worse. If we choose to listen, they can help us understand how to rebuild our cities and infrastructure for a climate-changed world.

Worlds most identical twins claim they DIED after using a cryotherapy chamber in botched anti-ageing treat – The Sun

Posted: at 2:48 pm

SISTERS Anna and Lucy De Cinque, dubbed the "world's most identical twins" have claimed one of them "died for a minute" during a botched anti-ageing treatment.

Thankfully Lucy came back to life after "dying" while undergoing cryotherapy, which uses freezing or near freezing temperatures to restore and tighten the skin.

The treatment is offered at salons across the world and beloved by athletes and celebrities.

Liquid nitrogen cools cryo chambers to as low as -160C, with users immersed in them for two to three minutes.

This causes an adrenaline rush, narrows blood cells and reportedly tightens skin, burns calories and makes people look younger.

But the 34-year-old twins claim Lucy died after she was temporarily starved of oxygen when a treatment in their native Australia went wrong.

The dramatic encounter was explained by the twins - who share a boyfriend, Ben, and sleep in one giant bed with him - in a video posted on their YouTube channel.

Anna explained it was the second time they had been to a cryo chamber, and their first experience had gone swimmingly.

"[But] we had a bad feeling that day," explained Anna, breaking down in tears.

"She [Lucy] went in. You are meant to check to on people. The woman was saying, 'Lucy, Lucy you okay?'

"I wasn't talking," Lucy interrupted.

"I've never gotten over this," Anna said, crying. "I remember seeing Lucy on the floor, unconscious."

"I was dead," Lucy said. "I was dead for a minute."

Anna said: "She had no oxygen in the chamber. She wasn't breathing. She wouldn't wake up. I don't know if I blacked out."

Lucy explained: "It's affected Anna more as she saw me dead for a minute."

Lucy told how Anna "blames herself", adding she suspected her head had slipped into the liquid nitrogen, something which says is seemingly impossible.

Prince Harry Risks a Fashion Faux Pas Wearing Blue Suede Shoes in the Rain to Abbey Road – Yahoo Lifestyle

Since taking a step back from his royal duties, Prince Harrys next move includes breaking into music. At least, when its for a good cause.

The royal heir joined musical legend Jon Bon Jovi today to record a new version of Unbroken at the famous Abbey Road Studios for the upcoming Invictus Games. The Duke of Sussex chose a blue button-up dress shirt and dark-wash jeans for the occasion, bracing the wet weather in a pair of unexpected shoes.

More from Footwear News

His lace-up derby shoes feature a blue suede paneled upper and a low stacked brown heel with a rubber outsole; the wing-tip Ted Baker Deelans silhouette retails originally for $240 but are sold out on most sites. Zappos has the styles available for over 50% off, as does The Hut, selling the style for $102.

The softer, unfinished leather shoes became soaked due to the heavy rains and puddles on the street, risking damage to the material. When suede gets wet, it doesnt repel water like a smooth leather or a vinyl so moisture can affect the fabrics natural texture causing it to be stiffer and potentially causing residual stains and water marks. The prince didnt seem to mind, though, as he was all smiles posing on the iconic Abbey Road crosswalk with Bon Jovi himself and members of the Invictus Games Choir, who are joining the two figureheads in recording the special single in aid of the Invictus Games Foundation.

Prince Harry started the Invictus Games in 2014 to provide wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans a chance to participate in nine different sporting events including indoor rowing, wheelchair basketball and more. As for his singing chops, the world will have to wait for the songs rerelease in March.

This ‘Matrix 4’ Theory Explains the Huge Age Jumps for Trinity, Neo, and Niobe – Yahoo Lifestyle

Posted: at 2:48 pm

From Men's Health

The Matrix 4 will see Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith return to their roles of Neo, Trinity, and Niobe. But it doesn't take an eagle-eyed superfan to notice that all the actors are notably older than they were the last time we saw them in The Matrix.

It's been 17 years since The Matrix Revolutions came out in cinemas, so obviously Moss, Reeves, Smith, and everyone else involved in the original has aged 17 years (though Reeves may not look it and is possibly immortal). Besides which, there's the little issue of both Trinity and Neo being dead(ish) at the end of Revolutions.

One Redditor has come to the rescue, providing two theories as to how Reeves, Moss, and Smith can return, aged almost two decades, to their roles in The Matrix 4. The theory specifically speaks to Neo and Trinity but could apply to Niobe too.

Photo credit: Warner Bros/Village Roadshow Pictures

To understand how this theory or the Matrix at all works, we have to reiterate some ground rules as established in the original trilogy. Rule one: a Chosen One is an unavoidable presence in the Matrix because it's in humanity's nature to eventually want to stage a revolution, and also because the machines know that without a revolution, or something to rally against, human brains will reject the Matrix and the system will crash. The maths dictates a Chosen One is necessary.

Rule two: a Chosen One doesn't always have to look like Keanu Reeves, but it can always look like Keanu Reeves.

The first theory posits that the Matrix isn't creating new people each time (like the human race has always done except through weird pod-based IVF) but rather they have a bank of DNA from which they create humans. And just because a clone is genetically identical doesn't mean they look identical. (Anyone remember Barbara Streisand's cloned dogs?)

If the system creates new people at each iteration of The Matrix (The Matrix 4 would presumably feature their seventh go at a machine-led utopia), a new Chosen One is made. They could look like Keanu Reevesor not.

When each new simulation runs, it could take any amount of time for a Chosen One to realize they're in a computer-simulated reality and achieve their destiny. So there's always a chance that The Matrix 4's Neo took 55 years (Reeves' current age) to realize he is the Chosen One.

This feeds back into the final moments of The Matrix Revolutions, in which the Oracle says she thinks they'll see Neo again. They will, but it doesn't mean it's the same guyhe just looks the same (because you'll also remember that DNA doesn't wholly dictate personality either).

All of this also applies to Trinity and Niobeboth of whom could be pulled from the original pool of DNA the Machines are using to repopulate their matrix (and keep the pods full of bodies).

The other option to explain the age jump is that the people The Matrix 4 are following all actually exist before the machine takeover. If Trinity, Niobe, and Neo are all the original human iterations of their DNA strands, fighting against the reign of the machines, this means they end the film losing and become enslaved, their DNA harvested and used again and again in the following iterations of the Matrix (which become the first Matrix film, Reloaded, and Revolutions).

What a bleak idea...

The Matrix 4 is due to be released in cinemas on May 21, 2021the same day as John Wick 4.

Longevity is normal in this village – The Star Online

Posted: at 2:47 pm

NIBONG TEBAL: A village here has earned the moniker: Penangs Longevity Village.

At Jawi New Village, many senior citizens are past the age of 80, and are still going strong.

Among the top scorers is 102-year-old Tan Geek Kim, a great-great-great-grandmother of five generations who still moves about actively.

Her MyKad states that she was born on Feb 22,1918.

Doing house chores: Tan watering plants at her home.I left China after getting married and we settled down here.

I planted betel leaves and vegetables while my husband worked as a logger who harvested mangrove trees for charcoal factories.

For almost 80 years living here, Ive seen the population evolved and wooden houses became brick homes, said Tan, who was recently spotted by The Star taking a walk around the village.

Tan has lost count of her descendants.

I have 10 children and some of my grandchildren are grandparents now.

There should be at least 150 direct descendants in the family by now but Ive lost track, said Tan, who attributes her longevity to a healthy diet.

My regular meals are food which is neither too salty nor sweet.

I dont snack and breakfast is always oats and milk, she added.

Not far away is her neighbour, Lau Kuang Joo, 92, who is still farming and riding a bicycle around.

I have a small farm with a variety of vegetables beside my house to keep me occupied.

It provides me with activities to do in the evenings.

If I go out, such as to the hospital about 2.5km away to collect medication, Ill take the bicycle as it is faster than walking, said Lau, who was once a rubber tapper.

The growing number of seniors became noticeable to the villages Thean Hou temple secretary, Lim Hee Kian, because anyone above 80 gets a hamper every year.

In 2010, we decided to reward them with hampers and at that time, 48 of them registered.

This year, 101 villagers are coming to collect their hamper.

I know of a couple who live together. The husband is 90 and wife is 87.

The elderly prefer to stay in the peaceful village and spend their remaining days here while their children go out to work, he added.

Jawi New Village has 300 houses with about 2,000 residents.
