Walk will be held to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease – TribDem.com

Posted: August 31, 2020 at 7:58 am

Theres no cure for Alzheimers disease, but an upcoming event may help to find one.

Greater Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimers Association, with divisions in Cambria and Somerset counties, will hold its Walk to End Alzheimers beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 12.

Due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, teams and individuals will be walking in their own communities and neighborhoods to not only raise funds for Alzheimers care, support and research, but also raise awareness of the disease.

This walk is held nationwide and is the largest fundraising event for Alzheimersdisease research, said Becky Solomon, the chapters walk manager. It happens in over 600 communities and its a way for us to come together and raise funds for the care and support that we provide at the association as well as research funding.

Those interested in participating in the walk can register for free atact.alz.org/CambriaSomerset2020.

The event will kick off with a virtual opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 12. A link for viewing will be posted on the website closer to the date.

Featured in the opening ceremony will be the Promise Garden stories.

The promise flowers are a signature aspect of the walk and each color represents something different, Solomon said.

Orange means you dont have a personal connection to the disease but you are in support of a world without Alzheimers; yellow is for caregivers of someone with the disease; blue means you currently have Alzheimers or other dementia; and purple means youve lost someone toAlzheimers or other dementia.

In recent years, a white flower has been added in hopes itll be for the first Alzheimers survivor.

There will be speakers who represent each flower participating in the ceremony.

Following the opening ceremony, people can walk with their teams and track their steps through the mobile app.

An in-person Promise Garden will be located at Veterans Memorial Park inSummerhill for drive-by viewing.

This is a way to keep our mission at the top of everyones minds, Solomon said.

This years goal is to raise $60,000.

Ultimately, our goal is to find a cure for Alzheimers disease and thats why we walk; our whole campaign is finding that first survivor, Solomon said.

We want everyone to carry a while flower.

Axsome Therapeutics Confirms Pivotal Status and Advancement of AXS-05 for the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease Agitation Based on Successful FDA…

Posted: at 7:58 am

Previously completed positive, pivotal ADVANCE-1 trial sufficient with single additional Phase 3 efficacy trial for NDA in Alzheimers disease agitation

Initiation of Phase 3, placebo-controlled, randomized-withdrawal efficacy trial on track for 4Q 2020

Initiation of long-term safety trial in patients with Alzheimers disease agitation expected in 4Q 2020

No treatments are currently approved for the treatment of Alzheimers disease agitation

NEW YORK, Aug. 31, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Axsome Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: AXSM), a biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapies for the management of central nervous system (CNS) disorders, today announced confirmation of the pivotal development status and plan for AXS-05 in the treatment of Alzheimers disease (AD) agitation following a successful Breakthrough Therapy meeting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). AXS-05 (dextromethorphan/bupropion modulated delivery tablet) is a novel, oral, investigational NMDA receptor antagonist and sigma-1 receptor agonist. There is currently no approved treatment for AD agitation.

Results of the meeting confirm the pivotal status of the previously completed positive ADVANCE-1 trial, and the establishment of the superiority of AXS-05 over its components (component contribution) in the treatment of AD agitation. Consequently, only one additional Phase 3 efficacy trial will be needed to support the filing of an NDA (New Drug Application) for approval of AXS-05 in this indication, and only a placebo control will be required for this trial. This additional Phase 3 efficacy trial will be conducted using a randomized-withdrawal design, in which all patients are first treated with open-label AXS-05, with the patients experiencing a treatment response being subsequently randomized in a double-blind fashion to continued treatment with AXS-05 or to switch to placebo. Axsome is on track to initiate this efficacy trial in the fourth quarter of 2020. Axsome also intends to initiate in the fourth quarter an open-label safety extension trial of AXS-05 in AD agitation patients to supplement the existing AXS-05 long-term safety database.

Axsome is very pleased with the FDA feedback from our recent Breakthrough Therapy meeting, which confirms a streamlined path to NDA submission for AXS-05 in Alzheimers disease agitation, including the pivotal status of our completed ADVANCE-1 trial and the need for only one additional placebo-controlled efficacy trial, said Herriot Tabuteau, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Axsome. The randomized-withdrawal design of this additional Phase 3 trial may simultaneously improve signal detection and mitigate placebo response. We remain on track to initiate this trial before year end. Alzheimers disease agitation is very distressing to patients and their families, and is associated with earlier nursing home placement, accelerated progression to severe dementia, and increased risk of death. If successfully developed, AXS-05 has the potential to address this serious, prevalent, and debilitating condition, for which there is currently no approved treatment.

In June 2020, Axsome received Breakthrough Therapy designation from the FDA for AXS-05 for the treatment of AD agitation, the second Breakthrough Therapy designation received by Axsome for AXS-05. A Breakthrough Therapy designation is granted to potentially expedite development and review timelines for a promising investigational medicine when preliminary clinical evidence indicates it may demonstrate substantial improvement on one or more clinically significant endpoints over available therapies for a serious or life-threatening condition. The Breakthrough Therapy designation for AXS-05 in AD agitation was supported by the recent positive results from the pivotal Phase 2/3 ADVANCE-1 study, a randomized, double-blind, controlled, multicenter U.S. trial in which 366 Alzheimers disease patients were treated with AXS-05, bupropion, or placebo. In this trial, treatment with AXS-05 resulted in a rapid, substantial, and statistically significant improvement in agitation as compared to placebo. On the primary endpoint, AXS-05 demonstrated a statistically significant mean reduction from baseline in the Cohen Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI) total score compared to placebo at Week 5, with mean reductions of 15.4 points for AXS-05 and 11.5 points for placebo (p=0.010). AXS-05 was also superior to bupropion on the CMAI total score (p<0.001), establishing component contribution. AXS-05 was well tolerated and not associated with cognitive impairment or sedation. The most commonly reported adverse events in the AXS-05 arm were somnolence (8.2% for AXS-05 versus 4.1% for bupropion and 3.2% for placebo), dizziness (6.3%, 10.2%, 3.2%, respectively), and diarrhea (4.4%, 6.1%, 4.4%, respectively).

About FDA Breakthrough Therapy Designation

Breakthrough Therapy designation is granted by the FDA in order to expedite the development and review of drugs for serious or life-threatening conditions. In order to receive Breakthrough Therapy designation, a drug must demonstrate preliminary clinical evidence that the drug may have substantial improvement on at least one clinically significant endpoint over available therapy. Breakthrough Therapy designation provides an organizational commitment involving senior managers from the FDA, more intensive FDA guidance on an efficient drug development program, and greater access to and more frequent communication with the FDA throughout the entire drug development and review process. It also provides the opportunity to submit sections of a New Drug Application (NDA) on a rolling basis, where the FDA may review portions of the NDA as they are received instead of waiting for the entire NDA submission. In addition, Breakthrough Therapy designated products are eligible for Priority Review, where the FDA has a goal to take action on an application within six months, as opposed to ten months under standard review. Breakthrough Therapy designation does not change the standards for approval.

About Alzheimers Disease (AD) Agitation

Alzheimers disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline, and behavioral and psychological symptoms including agitation. AD is the most common form of dementia and afflicts an estimated 6 million individuals in the United States, a number that is anticipated to increase to approximately 14 million by 2050 [1]. Agitation is reported in up to 70% of patients with AD and is characterized by emotional distress, aggressive behaviors, disruptive irritability, and disinhibition [2]. Agitation in patients with AD has been associated with increased caregiver burden, decreased functioning, accelerated cognitive decline, earlier nursing home placement, and increased mortality [2-4]. There are currently no therapies approved by the FDA for the treatment of agitation in patients with AD.

About AXS-05

AXS-05 is a novel, oral, patent-protected, investigational NMDA receptor antagonist with multimodal activity under development for the treatment of Alzheimers disease agitation, major depressive disorder, and other central nervous system (CNS) disorders. AXS-05 consists of a proprietary formulation and dose of dextromethorphan and bupropion and utilizes Axsomes metabolic inhibition technology. The dextromethorphan component of AXS-05 is a non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, also known as a glutamate receptor modulator, a sigma-1 receptor agonist, an inhibitor of the serotonin and norepinephrine transporters, a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, and an inhibitor of microglial activation. The bupropion component of AXS-05 serves to increase the bioavailability of dextromethorphan, and is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor, and a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist. AXS-05 is covered by more than 42 issued U.S. and international patents which provide protection out to 2034. AXS-05 has been granted U.S. Food and Drug Administration Breakthrough Therapy designation for major depressive disorder, Fast Track designation for treatment resistant depression, and Breakthrough Therapy and Fast Track designations for Alzheimers disease agitation. AXS-05 is not approved by the FDA.

Method developed to diagnose Alzheimer’s with 1 body fluid drop – Korea Biomedical Review

Posted: at 7:58 am

A Korea University-Kyung Hee University research team has developed a highly sensitive nanobiosensor that can detect the major cause of Alzheimer's disease in blood and cerebrospinal fluid to a femtogram level using graphene field-effect transistors.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common degenerative brain disease that accounts for about 70 percent of dementia, while beta-amyloid and hyperphosphorylated tau protein are known as causative agents.

Hospitals currently use neuropsychological question-and-answer methods or positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging to diagnose Alzheimer's disease. However, the test results are subjective and have a disadvantage as they are expensive.

Besides, the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health recently published that the detection of beta-amyloid and tau proteins in body fluids is important for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, the need for a sensor that can accurately analyze biomarkers that exist as a few picograms in body fluids has greatly increased.

To resolve the issue, the team, led by Professor Yoon Dae-sung at Korea University and Professor Hwang Gyo-sun at Kyung Hee University, focused on the fact that beta-amyloid and tau proteins have different surface charge properties depending on body fluid's physiological environment. Afterward, the team developed a pin-based field-effect transistor multiple detection platforms.

"The graphene-based nanobiosensor developed by the team has an advantage as it can be extended to diagnose various diseases as a platform technology," Professor Yoon said. "In other words, the device can not only detect related factors of Alzheimer's disease, but can greatly contribute to related clinical research by expanding accurate disease diagnosis through surface charge analysis of various disease-causing substances."

Yoon further stressed that the team is conducting an additional study to diagnose the risk of Alzheimer's disease by analyzing the concentration of beta-amyloid and tau protein in the blood and saliva samples of actual patients with Professor Lee Jin-san at Kyung Hee University Hospital.

Biosensors & Bioelectronics published the results of the study.

About XPOVIO (selinexor)

XPOVIO is a first-in-class, oral Selective Inhibitor of Nuclear Export (SINE) compound. XPOVIO functions by selectively binding to and inhibiting the nuclear export protein exportin 1 (XPO1, also called CRM1). XPOVIO blocks the nuclear export of tumor suppressor, growth regulatory and anti-inflammatory proteins, leading to accumulation of these proteins in the nucleus and enhancing their anti-cancer activity in the cell. The forced nuclear retention of these proteins can counteract a multitude of the oncogenic pathways that, unchecked, allow cancer cells with severe DNA damage to continue to grow and divide in an unrestrained fashion. Karyopharm received accelerated U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of XPOVIO in July 2019 in combination with dexamethasone for the treatment of adult patients with relapsed refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) who have received at least four prior therapies and whose disease is refractory to at least two proteasome inhibitors, at least two immunomodulatory agents, and an anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody. Karyopharm has also submitted a Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) with a request for conditional approval of selinexor in this same RRMM indication. Karyopharm's supplemental New Drug Application (sNDA) requesting an expansion of its current indication to include the treatment for patients with multiple myeloma after at least one prior line of therapy has been accepted for filing by the FDA. In June 2020, Karyopharm received accelerated FDA approval of XPOVIO for its second indication in adult patients with relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), not otherwise specified, including DLBCL arising from follicular lymphoma, after at least 2 lines of systemic therapy. Selinexor is also being evaluated in several other mid-and later-phase clinical trials across multiple cancer indications, including as a potential backbone therapy in combination with approved myeloma therapies (STOMP), in liposarcoma (SEAL) and in endometrial cancer (SIENDO), among others. Additional Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 studies are ongoing or currently planned, including multiple studies in combination with approved therapies in a variety of tumor types to further inform Karyopharm's clinical development priorities for selinexor. Additional clinical trial information for selinexor is available at http://www.clinicaltrials.gov.

About Karyopharm Therapeutics

Karyopharm Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq: KPTI) is a commercial-stage pharmaceutical company pioneering novel cancer therapies and dedicated to the discovery, development, and commercialization of novel first-in-class drugs directed against nuclear export and related targets for the treatment of cancer and other major diseases. Karyopharm's Selective Inhibitor of Nuclear Export (SINE) compounds function by binding with and inhibiting the nuclear export protein XPO1 (or CRM1). Karyopharm's lead compound, XPOVIO (selinexor), received accelerated approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2019 in combination with dexamethasone as a treatment for patients with heavily pretreated multiple myeloma. In June 2020, XPOVIO was approved by the FDA as a treatment for patients with relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. A Marketing Authorization Application for selinexor for patients with heavily pretreated multiple myeloma is also currently under review by the European Medicines Agency. In addition to single-agent and combination activity against a variety of human cancers, SINE compounds have also shown biological activity in models of neurodegeneration, inflammation, autoimmune disease, certain viruses and wound-healing. Karyopharm has several investigational programs in clinical or preclinical development. For more information, please visit http://www.karyopharm.com.

Covid-19 Impact: The Emerging Opportunity In Nutrition Tech In India – Inc42 Media

Posted: at 7:56 am

A recent survey found that in the month of June, over 92% medicine bills were for immunity boosters

Use of deep science and R&D has led to wider availability of new ingredients, alternate sources of proteins, botanicals, etc

Indias nutraceuticals market is projected to grow from $4 Bn in 2017 to $18 Bn in 2025

There have been defining moments in human history that have transformed our way of life. Whether it was discovery of gold, or the invention of the combustion engine, or the transmission of electricity, or the birth of computing, or wireless communications, each such event has not only leapfrogged our progress, but also led to immense value and wealth creation for the pioneers who risked it all to go after these emerging areas. The disruptive Covid-19 pandemic has been such a watershed event for the Nutrition Tech sector.

The 20th century was focused on mass production of food to ensure no one goes hungry which led to the creation of global FMCG behemoths. While this easy access to calories increased our life span, regular consumption of these sugar and fat laden processed foods led to a decreased quality of life with the emergence of lifestyle diseases, the root cause of which is poor nutrition.

Over the past two decades, while there was an emerging global trend towards better nutrition, the scale of the opportunity was never big enough in India for it to move from a fitness or curative niche to a part of your daily lifestyle. The per capita spend on nutritional products in India is a mere $2, compared to over $40 in developed economies. This is bound to shoot up exponentially.

Most conversations around health were exercise and goal oriented. However, now the pandemic has led to widespread acceptance of the science backed truth, that health is more about nutrition, than exercise. There has been an unprecedented focus on diet and nutrition as a means of being healthy. Vitamins and minerals, protein supplements and energy drinks have become part of everyday speak.

A recent survey found that in the month of June, over 92% medicine bills were for immunity boosters. Nutrition has thus gone from a good to have, to a must have. And this macro wave is leading to Nutrition Tech exploding as a business sector.

It is not just the selling of nutritional products or health supplements or healthy foods online. Nutrition Tech leverages science, technology and innovation, in each segment of the value chain (R&D, Ingredients, Manufacturing, Retail, Logistics, Marketing, Services, Support) leading to better nutritional outcomes for the user. There are three main stream of Nutrition Tech opportunities:

Use of deep science and R&D has led to wider availability of new ingredients, alternate sources of proteins, botanicals that have health benefits, and plant fibres that can replace fats or sugars. These are the key to the future of food and drink.

AI, genetic markets, metabolism trackers and advanced deep technologies can now allow for bespoke and personalized offerings targeted to your individual dietary, lifestyle and medical preferences, instead of cookie-cutter off the shelf formulations.

Some emerging areas include:

From Soylent to Impossible Foods to Care/of, multiple start-ups have already captured the imagination of the customers in developed economies and scaled up fast. The trend is picking up fast in India too. There is a slew of start-ups, especially new-age brands, that are vying to disrupt one or more of the above categories.

With over 1.3 Bn people, more than 93% of who having either macro or micronutrient deficiencies, the Indian market offers immense potential for nutrition tech startups. As per a report, the preventive healthcare market in India is expected to touch $100 Bn in 2022. As per Assocham, Indias nutraceuticals market is projected to grow from $4 Bn in 2017 to $18 Bn in 2025.

Estimates indicate that the spend on nutrition, healthy foods, functional foods and supplements is expected to quadruple to over $50 Bn in the next decade, growing at 17% CAGR. Indias learnings and expertise in the pharmaceutical and food processing sectors, availability of raw materials, deep rooted culture of Ayurveda and herbal nutrition, can be leveraged to make India a global powerhouse in the nutritional technology space.

The investors too are taking note. A multitude of start-ups have recently been funded in the health, wellness, foods and nutrition space. The rise in disposable incomes, increased consumer awareness, changed preferences of the urban elite will continue to fuel the demand for the right nutrition offerings, with ample space for many winners.

This, however, also presents the big challenge in this sector of breaking through the clutter. Relying purely on brand or marketing spends will not work. There has to be a conscious and deliberate differentiation. Another challenge is in building the supply chain with strong quality controls and processes, which till now have predominantly been monopolized by large global conglomerates.

The need to offer solutions more attuned to Indian needs and palates, is yet another challenge. However, each of these is an opportunity potentially worth billions. A nimble challenger which understands the customer, uses technology to their advantage, and has the right intent, can quickly emerge out of the shadows to be a leader in this space.

Is Cornstarch Bad for You? Nutrition and Health Effects – Healthline

Posted: at 7:56 am

Cornstarch is a popular ingredient used to thicken soups, stews, sauces, and desserts.

It can also be used in a variety of other recipes and help hold together fruit-based pie fillings, soften certain baked goods, and add a crisp coating to veggies, meats, and crusts.

However, despite the versatility of this common kitchen staple, many people wonder whether its good for you.

This article looks at the nutrition facts and health effects of cornstarch to determine whether you should include it in your diet.

Cornstarch is high in calories and carbs, but it lacks important nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

One cup (128 grams) of cornstarch contains the following nutrients (1):

Keep in mind that amount is much greater than what most people consume in a single serving.

For example, if youre using cornstarch to thicken soups and sauces, you may only use 12 tablespoons (816 grams) of cornstarch at a time, which is unlikely to contribute any significant nutrients to your diet apart from calories and carbohydrates.

Cornstarch is high in calories and carbs but low in other important nutrients, including protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Cornstarch may be associated with several negative side effects.

Cornstarch is rich in carbs and has a high glycemic index, which is a measure of how much a specific food affects your blood sugar levels (1, 2, 3).

Its also low in fiber, an important nutrient that slows the absorption of sugar into your bloodstream (1, 4).

For this reason, cornstarch is digested very quickly in your body, which may lead to spikes in your blood sugar levels (4).

Therefore, cornstarch may not be a great addition to your diet if you have type 2 diabetes or are hoping to better manage your blood sugar levels.

Cornstarch is considered a refined carb, meaning that it has undergone extensive processing and been stripped of its nutrients.

Studies show that regularly consuming foods rich in refined carbs, such as cornstarch, may negatively affect heart health.

According to one analysis, diets rich in refined carbs and foods with a high glycemic index may be linked to a greater risk of coronary heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure (5).

Another study in 2,941 people found that following a diet with a high glycemic index was associated with increased triglyceride and insulin levels, along with lower levels of HDL (good) cholesterol all of which are risk factors for heart disease (6).

However, further research on the specific effects of cornstarch on heart health is needed.

Apart from calories and carbs, cornstarch brings little to the table in terms of nutrition.

Although large amounts of it provide small amounts of micronutrients like copper and selenium, most people only use 12 tablespoons (816 grams) at a time.

Therefore, its important to pair cornstarch with a variety of other nutrient-dense foods as part of a balanced diet to ensure that youre meeting your nutritional needs.

Cornstarch is high in calories and carbs but low in essential nutrients. It may also increase blood sugar levels and harm heart health.

Although cornstarch may be associated with several downsides, it can be enjoyed in small amounts as part of a healthy, well-rounded diet.

If you have diabetes or are following a low carb diet, you may want to consider moderating your intake of cornstarch.

Ideally, stick to 12 tablespoons (816 grams) at a time and consider swapping in some other cornstarch substitutes, such as arrowroot, wheat flour, potato starch, and tapioca, whenever possible.

Additionally, while pure cornstarch is naturally gluten-free, be sure to select certified gluten-free varieties to avoid cross-contamination if you have celiac disease or a sensitivity to gluten.

Cornstarch can be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Stick to 12 tablespoons (816 grams) at a time and be sure to select varieties that are certified gluten-free if you have celiac disease or a sensitivity to gluten.

Cornstarch is a thickening agent often used to improve the texture of soups, sauces, marinades, and desserts.

Each serving is high in carbs and calories but low in important nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein.

Consuming high amounts regularly may increase your blood sugar levels and be associated with adverse effects on heart health.

However, it can fit into a healthy, well-rounded diet if used in moderation and enjoyed alongside a variety of other nutrient-dense foods.

Meal planning and more: Nutrition tips to get virtual school year off to a healthy start – WTOP

Posted: at 7:56 am

1/10

Limit how much junk food you have in the house and pack healthy snacks in the fridge the night before.

Break bad habits with the start of the new school year

Use the new school year as an opportunity to hit the reset button on any unhealthy habits you may have fallen into over the last few months, Mohning said. And one way to do this is to limit how much junk food you have in the house. In addition to that, aim to get healthy foods into your stomach first.

We want to keep our immune systems strong, she said. We want to make sure were getting the fruits and vegetables. As long as we get those basics in, theres always an opportunity to have a treat or a dessert that a child wants.

Mohning suggested packing bento box style meal kits in the fridge for kids to grab when its lunchtime. That way it takes away the anxiety of managing a meal for a hungry child in the middle of a busy workday.

Anne Lee swaps around her planned recipes because she is missing an ingredient while she plans her familys dinner for that night at the Lee familys dairy farm in Berkshire, New York, on Dec. 4, 2019.

Make a menu for the week or the month

Map out and schedule meals ahead of time, Mohning said. Consider talking with your children about what their favorite proteins and vegetables are, so you can make a menu for the week or the month. That way, not only can you make sure your grocery trips are more efficient or your Instacart orders dont have missing items, but you can also plan meals that everyone in your home will enjoy.

She said if your family knows that dinner is at 6:30 p.m., they will be less likely to hunt for a snack at 5 p.m.

Shapiro said her clients even looked at old school lunch menus for inspiration.

They brought some of those [favorite meals] back because they hadnt had them for so long.

Consider walking to school and back with your kids each day to get the morning started, even with virtual classes.

Schedule time to move around, even for just a few minutes per hour

Mohning said some of her clients who are working from home have set timers on their phone so they get up and move around every 45 minutes. Thats because many of us who wake up and go straight to our home desks are leading an extremely sedentary existence, even if we make sure to schedule regular workouts. Thats because the walk to the coffee shop or to the salad spot, which might have accounted for thousands of daily steps, is no longer part of our routine.

Shell get up and do a little dance with some music, or a couple squats, or walk the stairs in her house, Mohning said. Just to get her body moving more during this time.

In addition, Mohning said some parents have been walking to school this summer with their kids, just to have a good morning routine.

Ive been reminding my clients just because youve exercised today, like you did before the pandemic its not as many steps as your bodys used to. And I notice that myself, Mohning said.

Even healthy snacks can add up with too much grazing, but small children often need snacks because their stomachs are smaller.

Offer regular opportunities to have meals and snacks, and avoid grazing

As adults, we can survive on two or three meals a day, and we can make up that nutrition, Shapiro said. We know the benefits of fruits and vegetables and balanced meals, but with a child, we have to keep in mind the size of their stomachs, and that they really have to have more frequent opportunities in the day to eat.

As far as grazing goes, Mohning agrees.

Clients are struggling with what can I eat quickly between Zoom calls, she said, and finding themselves grazing, and not really sitting down and having a balanced meal. My clients have found this summer, if they schedule a time to eat consistently, theyre not snacking as much.

Both dietitians said its important to combine protein and healthy fruits and vegetables for a snack. A handful of cucumber slices may seem like a healthy snack, but it wont keep you or your kids satisfied for long, Shapiro said.

Sophia Baraban, a senior at Annandale High School in Fairfax County, has been helping her family stay healthy by making dinner on a regular basis.

Get your child involved in the kitchen in an age-appropriate way

Long-term, it would help ease the work on the parents if they got their child more involved in the kitchen, Shapiro said. They can wash fruit, they can peel potatoes or slice up some cucumbers. It can expose them [to the idea] that eating balanced meals and snacks are a priority.

Baraban, the high school senior, said she used to skip breakfast or grab something small on her way out the door to school. On homework-heavy nights, she would even skip dinner. Now that she is making meals for her family, she has found herself eating better. And, she even has time for a good breakfast.

Im grateful I have this time that I can have those three meals per day. Im really glad Im getting three full meals, Baraban said.

A family dinner doesnt have to be complicated to be worthwhile, Shapiro said.

Have a regular meal where the family sits down and eats together

That doesnt mean every breakfast, lunch and dinner needs to be this whole ordeal, Shapiro said. But at least every day, for dinner, we still sit down together. Or, even if its just twice a week or on the weekends, we can treat eating not only as a means to an end, but also as a social experience and take a break, and remove the distractions of the electronics and the work and just focus on the food and the conversations.

It can also be a chance to introduce new foods. Baraban said her brother never liked salmon, but throughout the pandemic, she has been preparing it for her family. Now, he likes it.

The dietitians said children need to be presented with a food item multiple times before they really can say if they dislike it.

Dont give up, Mohning said. If they didnt like something at age 5 they may like it at age 10. Especially vegetables. As theyre developing, their taste buds change a lot.

Bad last-minute food choices happen, but the key is to minimize them.

Dont wait until youre starving to think about eating

Shapiro said we make our worst food choices when were desperately hungry.

Anytime anyone goes five or six hours without eating, the first thing anyone goes for is greasy food, salty food, the most high and dense calorie food we can find, she said.

Mohning said its easy to get in trouble with foods we consider nutritious, such as trail mix and peanut butter, because while they are quality choices, they are high in calories.

Both diet experts said preventing a late-day scramble for dinner is important.

Thats always something that happens, not everyones perfect, Shapiro said. But as much of the time, prioritize getting ahead, not only for our childs sake but also our own sake.

If you are using Instacart, or spacing out your grocery store trips, be sure to organize your lists ahead of time.

Organize your grocery list or Instacart order before the pantry looks bare

Ask yourself, Mohning said, What do I need for the week. Take a look at a menu you may have planned with your family and make note of the unique ingredients you need and what you already may have in the pantry, like beans and canned tuna, or in the freezer, like vegetables.

You can put a lot of viable protein sources in the pantry beans, tuna, salmon or you can get a big order of eggs or frozen fruits and vegetables, Mohning suggested.

Its normal to want a treat, sometimes, but dont use dessert as a reward.

Be sure to pair sweets with something else healthy

If you use a dessert as a reward for eating broccoli, for example, it sets broccoli up as a negative food, Shapiro said.

Try to pair [the sweet] with a protein so we can keep the portion down, Shapiro said, noting that a full belly will reduce the need to fill up on sugar. One or two cookies with a glass of milk is more appropriate than five or six cookies.

Mohning said eliminating fat and sugar from your diet is a good idea. If youre eating well during the day, and giving your body the nutrition it needs, youll be less likely to overindulge with ice cream.

Dont forget to hydrate, even if youre working from home.

Be sure to drink water throughout the day, even while at home

Mohning said shes been reminding her clients to stay hydrated as theyve been meeting this summer, because while the workplace water cooler is gone, so is reminder to get up for a drink of water.

Same goes for your kids at school, who may have adults reminding them to drink or may have been accustomed to sipping from a water bottle during the day.

A lot of my clients are not getting enough water, she said. Theyre feeling sluggish, theyre getting a headache.

Mohning said there are various apps you can download that will remind you to drink throughout the day.

One of them shows a plant that will [wilt] if you dont water it, she said.

Investing in school nutrition would fight hunger, racismand COVID-19 – Fast Company

Posted: at 7:56 am

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed long-standing crises in our country, including food insecurity, racial inequity, and processed-food-related diseases. This convergence has uncovered stark truths about American society, systemic racism, and what we value as a country. As advocates for healthy food and food justice, we believe that its time to make a bold national commitment to food security and childrens health in America by extending universal access to school meals to all students. We must do it now.

We can decide who we are and how we want to show up in this moment. While COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 177,000, and disproportionately impacted Black and Latinx communities, we face another unprecedented pandemic: hunger and food insecurity in America. Many unemployment benefits for more than 30 million Americans expired on July 31. The economic uncertainty means hunger and food insecurity will mushroom even as the pandemic continues. While people of all backgrounds are impacted, the food insecurity crisis hits BIPOC communities the hardest. Recent data from the Census Bureau found that 29% of Black households and 24% of Hispanic households report that children were not eating enough, compared with 9% of white households. With the U.S. economy at its weakest in recent history, supporting nutritious food access for all Americans and communities in need is paramount.

As a diversity and inclusion specialist and an integrative pediatric doctor, we know that our current food system exploits BIPOC communities. Like generational racism, food system racism is handed down through restricted access to healthy food, targeting of fast-food restaurants, and unhealthy food marketing to BIPOC children. A recent study found that Black children see twice as many ads for sugary drinks than white children, and that sugary drink brands disproportionately market to the Latinx community. Latinx and Black children have the fastest rise of diseases related to inequitable real food access, and its exactly these kinds of diseasesdiabetes, obesity, and hypertensionthat make patients more likely to die of COVID-19. Its also hard for hungry kids to learn. The impacts of food insecurity quickly spiral beyond educational outcomes to hurt whole child health, job performance, and economic advancement.

Chronic health conditions in children have doubled since the 1990s. Reducing added sugar has been proven to improve the metabolic health of children quicklywithin dayswhich puts them at lower risk for COVID-19 complications and gives them a better chance at a higher quality of life. The Eat Real certification and advisory process, which we work on, partners with school districts to create more nutritious meals for kids. Eat Real provides schools with nutrition and sustainability data, guidance on how to create healthier meals, and support to work with current suppliers and engage new ones.

Through our work, were helping schools make these changes. The Mt. Diablo Unified School District in Northern California, for instance, stopped serving its students more than 10 pounds of added sugar per student per year. It removed hidden sugars in processed foods by swapping orange juice with fresh-cut local oranges, replacing sugary chocolate milk with unflavored milk, and switching parfaits with added sugar to yogurt with delicious fruit.

Eat Real expanded its program from 51 to 237 schools in one year and created a COVID-19 relief program network of 2,067 schools. And we must act more broadly. Good nutrition is one of the key stepsafter washing hands, wearing masks, and practicing social distancingto help optimize the immune system and fight against COVID-19.

This is important because children are not immune from COVID-19. The Academy of Pediatrics reported that in the last two weeks of July, 97,000 children tested positive for COVID-19 and more than 338,000 kids have tested positive since the pandemic began. In California, the AAP reports that more than 42,000 children have tested positive. Therefore, increasing access to good nutrition for families will have a significant return on investment to address the pandemic and also support long-term health.

Our schools are critically important in the fight against hunger and the fight for good food for children. Even as digital learning occurs, school systems are still providing meals. We need systemic change at the structural level to increase food access and better nutrition at schools by providing free school meals to all students.

This school year begins during an exceptionally difficult time for so many. We are socially isolated, physically distanced, and afraid of getting sick. The Administration and Congress should act now to support the Pandemic Child Hunger Prevention Act, which was introduced by Virginia Rep. Bobby Scott, chair of the House Committee on Education and Labor. The legislation would support free meals for all starting this school year to help protect the next generation. Without it, essential school food meal programs face bankruptcy and closure next year. Not acting means more heartbreak for school and families, especially BIPOC communities.

Its up to all of us to do the systems change work thats so urgent and overdue for the planet and childrens health. If we back scalable, innovative solutions like Eat Real that transform school meals, we can give our kids the best chance for a healthier tomorrow. As inequity expands, COVID-19 continues, and climate-induced fires flame, its clear that we must do all we can to protect our kids. We should start with universal real, nourishing, and sustainable food for our students.

Nutrition Expert Gives Advice For Healthy Pandemic Habits | KCBS 740AM | 106.9 FM – KCBS

Posted: at 7:55 am

While college students may be familiar with the Freshman 15, the coronavirus pandemic is causing many Americans to gain what has now is being referred to as the "COVID 15," as more people are reporting weight gain.

Sharon Meyer, Integrative Nutritionist with Sutters Institute for Health & Healing, said people tend to gravitate toward comfort food when feeling stressed, the pandemic being no exception to that habit.

"Cooking food can be very grounding, the smell of food can be very satisfying," Meyer told KCBS Radio's "Ask An Expert" Thursday. "Sometimes food creates those comfort-safety feelings."

Meanwhile, some Americans are reporting that they have actually lost weight during the pandemic.

"There are some people that, when they get stressed, they lose weight,"Meyer said. "So for them, they just need to be checking their stress levels."

Meyer said that there are many ways to enjoy food, but in a healthier way, including decreasing consumption of starchy carbs like pasta and increasing foods with healthier fats and a high volume of fiber, including avocados and quinoa.

Meyer addedthat the key to fighting off viruses and infection with food lies in a variety of fruits and vegetables, whether they may be fresh or frozen. She said broccoli is especially important with detoxification.

"They are antiviral, antimicrobial, they are antibacterial,"Meyer said. "They turn on our healthy genes. They repair our cells. Theyre important for reducing inflammation and boosting immunity. The bigger array of vegetables and color you have, the healthier youre going to be. So that whole thing about eating the rainbow is very important."

Orange foods like peaches and nectarines, among others, are helpful for maintaining the immune system and are known to assist in respiratory health.

"Bone broth is (also) phenomenal with supporting immune systems," she said. "So if anyone has COVID-19, I would suggest bone broth and putting lots of different vegetables and making soups out of that would be great."

She said that eating yogurt and cheese can increase gut immunity, and also that keeping up vitamin intake is also critical to staying healthy.

"You have to supplement with Vitamin D,"Meyer said. "Also with aging we dont absorb the D through the skin very well, so keeping up supplementation is definitely going to be a better option for that."

Overall, Meyer said that looking at how we deal with stress is an important part of keeping our metabolisms intact.

Digital Health App, Lifesum, Teams Up with Amazon to Bring Nutrition Coaching to Newly Unveiled Amazon Halo – PR Web

Posted: at 7:55 am

Lifesum and Amazon Halo are aligned on our approach to health and this collaboration gives users the best from both brands. Nutrition is not one size fits all. Instead, its extremely personal you have to figure out what works for you." - Henrik Torstensson, CEO of Lifesum

LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) August 27, 2020

The digital health app, Lifesum, and Amazon have announced they are teaming up to bring Lifesum nutrition coaching to Amazon Halo, a new service dedicated to helping customers improve their individual health and wellness.

Under the collaboration, Lifesum is introducing interactive nutritional challenges and health content to Amazon Halo, helping users see how their nutrition may impact their mind, body, and overall well-being.

The CEO of Lifesum, Henrik Torstensson, says the technology allows consumers to experience, explore, and test how specific actions, such as eating a more plant-based diet or drinking less caffeine, may influence how they feel.

Lifesum and Amazon Halo are aligned on our approach to health and this collaboration gives users the best from both brands, said Torstensson. Nutrition is not one size fits all. Instead, its extremely personal you have to figure out what works for you. Together, Lifesum and Amazon Halo will help users explore and find the best health and nutritional approach for them.

Amazon Halo Labs are 1-4 week challenges or experiments that help members discover healthier habits that work for them. At launch, members will have access to 10 Lifesum-developed labs, which will guide them through simple, trackable nutrition-focused challenges that test the impact small changes can have on their health over time.

In addition to labs from Lifesum, Halo members can choose from more than 100 science-backed labs created by health, mind, body, and social life experts, helping users look, sleep, and feel their best.

Melissa Cha, Vice President of Amazon Halo, says working with Lifesum was a natural fit, given their expertise and leadership in digital health.

Nutrition is a key part of any health and wellness journey, so we are excited to offer Amazon Halo members labs from Lifesums team of experts. Lifesum shares our commitment to helping customers improve their health through long-lasting behavioral changes, said Melissa Cha, Vice President of Amazon Halo. Together, we will help customers discover what works best for them.

More than 45 million consumers use Lifesum to improve the way they eat, drink, and exercise. The app consistently ranks in the Top-10 in Health & Fitness on the App Store. Lifesum is a recipient of the Editors Choice award on the App Store.

How Lifesum Labs will Work on Halo

Lifesum helps users identify their personal health goals and motivations, using technology, psychology and professional dietitians. Together, they create a tailored plan for users, helping them improve the way they eat, drink and exercise for sustainable, long-term benefits.

Lifesums Halo labs challenges take place over 1-4 weeks and will show consumers how to turn nutritional information into action. Nutritional challenges are centered around health goals such as eating more plant-based foods, exploring the health benefits of intermittent fasting, and trading ultra-processed foods for a cleaner diet.

For example, a healthy weight and body composition can prevent lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity, coronary heart disease, and Type 2 diabetes. Intermittent fasting can be one approach for weight loss since it has been shown to promote fat loss while maintaining muscle mass. Research has also shown that intermittent fasting can improve blood sugar levels, as well as increase mental clarity and improve sleep.

Consumers who want to try Lifesums intermittent fasting lab will get reminders and progress reports to help them stay on track. With intermittent fasting (16:8), consumers only eat during an 8-hour window of their choosing and fast for the remaining 16 hours of the day. The challenge will also remind consumers to drink plenty of water throughout the day - a habit many consumers frequently forget.

At the end of the day, Labs will ask consumers a simple yes or no question: Did you fast for 16 hours today? Once the lab is completed, users will see result summaries that demonstrate the impact that small changes can have on their health. Lifesum will only receive aggregated, anonymized data about the labs to help improve the experience offered to Amazon Halo customers.
