Climate change is a key contributor to hunger and poor nutrition in children worldwide, according to new research.

The study looked at diet diversity the number of types of foods that someone eats in children 5 years and younger. Diet diversity is an indicator of diet quality and is generally linked to malnutrition.

The researchers included both the long- and short-term effects of temperature and rainfall in their models, as well as other things that might affect a child's diet. The results showed that higher temperatures were associated with decreased diet diversity in five of the six regions studied, while higher rainfall was associated with increased diet diversity in three of the regions.

And not only were temperature and rainfall a factor, they played as much or more of a role than some of the other influencers.

"I wasnt necessarily surprised that climate had an impact, but I was surprised that the effect of climate, as compared to other factors that affect nutrition such as wealth, education, sanitation, was in some cases relatively greater," lead author Meredith Niles, an assistant professor of nutrition and food sciences at the University of Vermont and a fellow at the universitys Gund Institute for Environment, told weather.com in a recent interview. "That was very surprising that climate factors and climate change may have greater impacts on diet and nutrition outcomes than other factors that are often the target of development efforts in low-income countries."

Worldwide, some 191 million children under the age of 5 are classified as stunted or wasted, meaning they are too short or too thin, according to the United Nations' most recent annual report on global food security and nutrition.

Nearly 700 million people are considered hungry or undernourished, with that number projected to rise to 840 million by 2030.

Among countries hardest hit by hunger are also those in the crosshairs of climate change.

More than 50 million people in 18 African nations, for example, face a hunger crisis due to extreme drought and other climate-related events, according to the aid group Oxfam.

In 2019, parts of Zimbabwe had their lowest rainfall amounts since 1981, and maize crops in Zambia were been decimated. The situation was so desperate that some farmers in South Africa reportedly committed suicide, according to Oxfam.

At the same time, record-breaking temperatures in the Indian Ocean resulted in heavier-than-usual rainfall and flash floods on other parts of the continent.

Last year, locust swarms of historic proportions wiped out crops in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia. Studies have linked a hotter climate to more damaging locust plagues.

In all, more than half of the world's hungriest countries are in Africa, according to the 2020 Global Hunger Index. Poverty, conflict, lack of access to technology and other issues also make many of them among the most vulnerable to climate change.

The research led by Niles is just the latest to show a connection between the two issues.

"Climate change is going to deeply affect food systems, ranging from the crops and livestock we produce, to the cost of food if those crops or livestock are not producing as much, to the nutritional content of food," Niles said.

"Our work was done with climate data from 2005-2009, and found already significant effects of short and long-term higher temperatures on diet diversity. Knowing that many places are slated to get hotter in the future, it suggests that without adaptation we may see additional decreases in diet diversity with a warmer future."

Can loaded tea have a place in a healthy diet?

Think of loaded tea along the same lines as an energy drink, versus a true, pure tea. If you do opt to drink loaded tea, limit it to one a day, and preferably not after lunchtime. Consider drinking only half, saving the other half for the next day. Or dilute it 50-50 with an herbal iced tea to give more volume, making it easier to save the other half for the next day.

5 Expert Nutrition Tips for the 2021 CrossFit Open – BOXROX

The CrossFit Open is the first stage of competition of the CrossFit season. Athletes around the world will tackle three workouts over three weeks regardless of ability level or experience.

What and how you eat during the three-week competition will play an important role in your performance, so we spoke to Dr Mike Molloy, founder of M2 Performance Nutrition and nutrition coach to over 40 CrossFit Games athletes, to bring you his five expert tips on how to best approach your nutrition during the CrossFit Open.

Make sure you eat to support your performance the day before the workout, as well as on the day.

It takes over 24 hours to replenish the glycogen stores in your muscles, which will be invaluable during the intense Open workouts. To make sure youre topped off, make sure you eat enough the day before the workout (even if youre taking a full rest day), as well as on the day.

Make sure that you have three really solid meals full of high quality foods, that youre well hydrated, and that youre getting to sleep at a reasonable hour so that you have plenty of time in bed, says Dr Molloy.

Not many things are as unpleasant as seeing your meals a second time. The day of your Open workout eat food that is easily digestible and have your last meal at least two hours before the start.

Mental stress can slow your digestive track down, so if you typically feel stressed around the Open give yourself a little bit more time to digest than normal.

Easily digestible foods include:

Consume foods that are already processed to a point where your body is going to digest, break them down and absorb them relatively easily, says Dr Molloy.

This point might be glaringly obvious for some, but many athletes can be tempted when their friend offers them their magic pre-workout. If youre not used to taking pre-workout now is not the right time to start.

In fact, its a terrible idea.

The same applies to caffeine if youre not used to drinking coffee or tea before a workout or having breakfast if you usually train in a fasted state. Youll inevitably end up feeling horrible, so dont try anything new on game day.

Approach the Open week like you would any other week and dont make big changes to your usual routines.

People get themselves so wrapped up in these workouts that they completely change everything about their lives for two workouts a week, says Dr Molloy. In that lack of routine everything feels foreign: they dont know how to eat, they dont know how to sleep, they dont know how to warm up, they dont know how to cool down.

Ive found that the athletes that do the best and meet or exceed their expectations typically just stick to their routine on the other days. Theyll go to the gym, theyll workout, theyll eat the same, theyll recover the same. They just dont worry about lifting the most weight on their back squat or going as fast as possible on their 5k run, they just get the work done.

Throughout the three weeks of the CrossFit Open, train as youre used to but bring the intensity down a bit. Sticking to your routine can bring the stress of the Open down, which can help you perform, sleep better and experience your usual appetite.

Your gut health can affect your brain, so having GI issues or inflammation has been shown to potentially cause stress, feelings of depression, lack of motivation and withdrawal.

The simplest thing that you can do for your gut health is to eat real foods, says Dr Molloy. Avoid hyper-processed stuff and anything you know causes you to have bloating or indigestion. If you do that, youre going to put yourself in a situation of decreased inflammation and perhaps improve your mindset a little bit so that you dont have extra stress coming from inside your body.

All of this can have a positive impact on your mindset and your overall mood.

By taking care of your gut health you can eliminate additional stress coming from within your body during the CrossFit Open.

USDA Food and Nutrition Services Southeast Region Recognizes National School Breakfast Week – Caldwell Journal

ATLANTA, GA (March 9, 2021) The Southeast Regional Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) celebrates School Breakfast Week (March 8-12) highlighting the importance of school breakfast, and its value in improving childrens health and education outcomes especially during these challenging times.

According to the USDA Food and Nutrition Service Southeast Regional Office, in FY2020, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction had 2,528 schools that operated the School Breakfast Program. Those schools had a total enrollment of 1,514,553 students and approximately 20% of them participated in the SBP each day.

I am pleased to know that during the pandemic, schools have found innovative ways to serve breakfast, including the opportunity for parents to pick up meals from schools for their children who are learning from home,said FNS Southeast Regional Administrator Willie C. Taylor. We are grateful to our child nutrition partners, who since the very beginning have remained dedicated to feeding the children in their care as we all navigate this unprecedented time; their efforts have helped ensure every child in need has access to nutritious meals.

The Southeast region (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee) serves school breakfast to 3.2 million children every school day. According to studies, children who eat breakfast have improved moods and increased alertness throughout the morning. On average, students who participate in the School Breakfast Program (SBP) eat a breakfast of higher nutritional quality than students who eat breakfast elsewhere.

Schools and institutions that choose to participate in the SBP must serve breakfasts that meet the federal nutrition requirements and offer them at a free or reduced price to all eligible children. In exchange, participating institutions receive cash subsidies from USDA for each reimbursable meal served.

President Biden has taken executive actions to deliver economic relief for American families and businesses amid the COVID-19 crisis while addressing the racial inequities it has exacerbated.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the power of partnership between USDAs Food and Nutrition Service and the heroes in our nations schools and lunchrooms has provided healthy meals to fight hunger, improve nutrition, and give students the best opportunity to focus and learn, said Stacy Dean, Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services. FNS continues to innovate during these difficult times and will provide schools with the tools they need to keep serving healthy school meals no matter the challenge.

SBP started in 1966 as a pilot project and was made a permanent program by Congress in 1975. The program provides reimbursement to states to operate nonprofit breakfast programs in schools and residential childcare institutions. FNS administers the program at the federal level. State education agencies administer the program at the state level, and local school food authorities operate the program in area schools.

USDA is extending free meals, including breakfast and lunch, for all children through its summer meal programs throughout the entire 2020-2021 school year. Schools may continue to use the summer meal programs to provide meal service to children through June 30, 2021.

USDA is continuing to provide program operators with support, resources, and flexibilities so they can ensure the children in their care are well-nourished and able to learn, even in new and ever-changing learning environments. These flexibilities offered across the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, and Child and Adult Care Food Program include:

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) March is National Nutrition Month, a time to learn about making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits.

I find so many people get in a rut about what theyre going to eat for lunch, that they end up going out to eat or doing impulse decisions around food choices, and then its not a very healthy option, Greater Wichita YMCA healthy eating director Tammi Krier said.

Plant-based eating, or plant power is becoming more prominent in food and recipe labeling. The label does not mean strictly vegan or vegetarian, or only eating fruits and vegetables. Rather, its incorporating nuts, seeds, beans and legumes into a healthy diet.

We know when people eat more fruits, more vegetables, more plants in general, they are just generally healthier. They have lower risk of cancer and type two diabetes and lower risk of Alzheimers, Krier said.

Sprouted Nuts: Nutrition, Benefits, and How to Do It – Healthline

Sprouted nuts are raw nuts that have been soaked in water to germinate, or begin to sprout.

Because sprouted grains are popular, you may be wondering whether sprouted nuts are also good for your health.

This article reviews the benefits of eating sprouted nuts and how to incorporate them into your diet.

Sprouted nuts are raw nuts that have been soaked in water until they begin to germinate, which is the first stage of plant growth.

Most sprouted nuts have gone through only the first stage of the sprouting process, soaking in water for 312 hours.

Sprouting requires a moist and humid environment, which makes the nuts susceptible to bacterial growth. Furthermore, sprouted nuts are not roasted, which puts them at an even higher risk of bacterial contamination.

Nuts with outer shells or hulls that have to be removed before eating, such as walnuts and pecans, cant be fully sprouted. This means they wont develop the little tail indicating new plant life that other nuts will develop during sprouting.

Commercially sprouted nuts are prepared in a sterile environment and are generally dried or dehydrated before being packaged and sold to prevent mold and foodborne illness risk (1, 2, 3).

Because its hard to create a sterile environment at home, its generally not recommended to sprout nuts yourself at home.

Most commercial nuts eaten worldwide are not sprouted, especially those that are most accessible to consumers. Instead, commercial nuts are often roasted, flavored, or seasoned, and they may or may not be sold with their shells intact.

Many commercial nuts have also been irradiated, which means they have been heat-treated to kill any bacteria that could pose a potential risk to consumers.

Sprouted nuts are untreated raw nuts that have been soaked overnight, if not fully sprouted. Most commercial nuts you eat are not sprouted and have likely been roasted or seasoned in some way.

Research indicates that sprouting certain grains and legumes can boost their antioxidants, amino acids, and B vitamins.

Its also been shown to reduce antinutrients like phytic acid, which can inhibit the absorption of other important vitamins and minerals (4, 5, 6, 7).

While some sources claim that soaking and sprouting nuts also increases their nutrient content and reduces phytates, theres no available scientific evidence to support nutritional improvements after sprouting nuts.

A 28-gram (1/4-cup) serving of sprouted walnuts has the following nutritional profile (8):

One study compared the mineral and phytate concentrations of whole and chopped almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, and walnuts. The nuts were divided into 4 groups: raw, soaked in a salt solution for 4 or 12 hours, or soaked in water for 12 hours (9).

The results showed that soaking the nuts actually reduced overall mineral content and did not significantly change their phytate concentration.

Furthermore, available nutrition information on raw versus sprouted walnuts shows no significant difference in overall nutrient composition (10, 11).

Research on grains and legumes indicates that sprouting improves nutritional quality. However, research on sprouted versus raw nuts shows no significant difference in nutrient or phytate content.

A variety of sprouted nuts can be found online or at specialty grocery or health food stores. If the store sells sprouted legumes or grains, you may be more likely to find sprouted nuts there too.

Sprouted nuts are generally sold in a bag or plastic container, similarly to other nuts. They will be labeled sprouted or might say theyre activated, which means they have undergone the initial process of sprouting.

Some of the most popular types of sprouted nuts are:

Keep in mind that sprouted walnuts, pecans, and other nuts with outer shells will have gone through only the soaking step of the sprouting process and cant technically be fully sprouted.

Sprouted nuts can be found online or at some grocery or health food stores. Theyre generally sold in a bag or plastic container and labeled as sprouted or activated.

Sprouted nuts have a shorter shelf life than raw nuts, and homemade varieties should be eaten within a few days.

They come with a higher risk of bacterial growth than regular nuts because theyre not roasted after sprouting (1, 2, 3).

Most sources claim that store-bought sprouted nuts will last 23 months in your pantry or can be kept in your fridge or freezer to extend shelf life. Its always best to review the product packaging for storage recommendations and expiration dates.

Nuts with higher oil content, such as almonds and walnuts, should be stored in cooler places to prevent them from going rancid.

You can eat sprouted nuts on their own; add them to smoothies; use them to make granola bars, plant milk, or nut butter; dehydrate them to make trail mix; or grind them into a sprouted nut flour or meal for recipes.

Most of the nuts you find in their raw or roasted form can also be sprouted or at least can go through the soaking step of sprouting. You may be able to find these nuts online or in certain stores.

Instead of buying sprouted nuts from the store or online, you can make them.

Keep in mind that raw sprouts have been associated with foodborne illness risk. To minimize that risk, you need to ensure that you sprout nuts using a sterile process and environment (1).

Additionally, its important to find nuts labeled raw that have not been treated to remove bacteria, toxins, or mold. If they have been treated, theyre unlikely to sprout.

Common methods of treating nuts include roasting, blanching, treatment with methyl bromide, pasteurization, and irradiation (12).

Preparing sprouted nuts at home requires a soaking step and a sprouting step. Keep in mind that most nuts cant be fully sprouted and will stop after the soaking step.

However, you can make fully sprouted almonds at home using the following steps:

That said, if you cant create a sterile working environment at home, its best not to make sprouted nuts yourself due to the risk of foodborne illness.

Following news that the USDA is extending school meal waivers through next Sept. 30, members of the School Nutrition Association (SNA) are calling on Congress to expand the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs to provide universal free meals indefinitely. The initiative shows how policies enacted to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic have given momentum to efforts that previously were seen as unlikely to be enacted.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced that the citys public high schools will begin welcoming students back for in-person instruction beginning March 22, starting with about 55,000 high schoolers out of a total high school population of 282,000. Some universities are starting to see residence halls designated as temporary housing for students in COVID-related quarantine or isolation fill up quickly, which necessitates that they implement policies for supplying those students with daily meals in a safe way. The University of Maryland at College Park, for example, saw its quarantine housing go from 54% to 82% full in just one week late last month while Binghamton University had enough students moved into isolation housing to trigger some logistical changes on campus, including shutting down one dining hall to students and turning it into a production center for quarantine meal production.

You may have heard about Green Smoothies, but have you ever tasted one? If not, you may want to reconsider. Here is a short list of why you will gladly add a Green Smoothie to your daily diet. We have provided two recipes for you to try. Feel free to substitute any of your favorite fruits or vegetables.

To Lose Weight: When I work with weight loss patients, one of the easiest ways for them to start losing weight is to add more fruit, vegetables and water to their daily diets. My most successful weight loss clients are now eating a total of eight to 10 servings of fruit or vegetables daily. To easily reach this goal; eat more vegetable-based soups, make omelets loaded with vegetables and drink green smoothies often.

To Calm an Out of Control Appetite: The reason you are always hungry, is because you are not fueling your body with foods that nourish it. You can munch on baked potato chips and diet soda all day long, but you will constantly feel hungry because your body wants the vitamins and minerals from real food. When you drink a green smoothie, you will almost instantly notice that your appetite is more in control.

To Stop Sweet Cravings: When you are craving sweets, you may think your body wants a soda or a candy bar, but you are wrong. Your body is sending the message that it wants fruit. Most weight loss clients who start eating three (1/2 cup) servings of fruit daily, report their cravings for sugar and sweets go away. Both of the recipes below contain two servings of fruit per smoothie.

To Decrease Your Risk of Cancer: Antioxidants are the anti-cancer phytochemicals found in fruit and vegetables. We all have free radicals in our body, which can potentially turn into cancer. When we eat foods with antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E and selenium), the antioxidants bind to the free radicals and neutralize them and therefore reduce your risk of developing cancer.

To Improve Your Cholesterol Numbers: A high fiber diet can help lower your LDL cholesterol level to reduce your risk of having a heart attack. Fruits and vegetables have a high fiber content. Losing excess body fat, as already mentioned, also keeps your heart from having to work so hard.

To Absorb more nutrients: You may already be a good fruit and vegetable eater, but to get the maximum nutritional benefit, their cell walls must be broken down. To fully break down the cell wall of greens, you need to chew the greens until they are almost a liquid, which would take a very long time. Let your blender do the work for you.

To Have More Energy: Chlorophyll is the suns energy absorbed through plants to give them their bright green color. Chlorophyll is able to deliver oxygen throughout your body. It is also a detoxifying agent, because it binds to heavy metals and toxins in your body. You will find that when you consume more dark green vegetables, you also experience an increase in your energy level. An easy way to get more greens into your diet is by drinking green smoothies.

To Look Amazing: Your hair, skin and nails will all begin to look better. The cleansing and detoxifying ability of dark green vegetables helps with the elimination of toxins and establishes a healthy intestinal lining. Because of this, many people find their acne will clear up, hair becomes shinier and softer, and nails become stronger and grow faster.

To Prevent Constipation: Regular consumption of fiber is crucial to your health. It is recommended that adults eat 25-30 grams of fiber daily, yet most Americans consume only 10-12 grams per day. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to stools, moving them through the GI tract swiftly, discouraging the growth of harmful bacteria in your colon to decrease your risk of getting colon cancer.

Youre Too Busy to Eat Breakfast: If you usually rush through your morning and forget to eat breakfast, you may find that you can squeeze in three minutes to make a smoothie. The trick is to have all of your fruit and vegetables ready to go. Freezing your fruit is a great way to make a thick, milkshake-like smoothie.

Bonus: Kids love them too! In our house, we call these Green Smoothies our Yummy Shamrock Shakes.

Although both recipes below are made using spinach, feel free to substitute other dark greens, such as kale, collard or beet greens. If you dont love your Green Smoothie the first time you make it, thats alright. You may initially want to decrease the amount of greens you put into your smoothie. Since it takes eight to 10 attempts at a new food before we accept it, it may take several smoothies for you to actually say you enjoy them.

Creamy Green Smoothie- 1 cup fresh spinach leaves*- 1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks- 1/2 cup milk, almond milk or soy milk- 1/2 of a medium ripe banana (frozen without the peeling)- Up to 1/2 of a ripe avocado, peeled and pit removed- 4 ounces vanilla Greek YogurtPut all ingredients into blender, adding the spinach first. Blend until smooth. Serves 1.

Berry-Green Smoothie- 1 cup fresh spinach leaves*- 1 small cucumber, peeled- 1/2 cup frozen berries (raspberries, blueberries or strawberries)- 1/2 of a medium ripe banana (frozen without the peeling)- 4 ounces Blueberry Greek Yogurt- 1/2 cup 1% milk, water or teaPut all ingredients into blender, adding the spinach first. Blend until smooth. Serves 1.

*If you take Warfarin/Coumadin, tell your doctor that you plan to increase your intake of leafy greens, as you may need to have your INR checked and your dosage of medication adjusted.

The EOC is supporting World Banks HNP-wide efforts, including the MPA, to support countries in responding to COVID-19, scale up delivery of COVID-19 tools (including therapeutics, diagnostics, and vaccines), and to strengthen the health system. Maybe youve signed up to the CrossFit Open to perform as best as you possibly could and plan your entire weekend around it. Keeping to your routines still applies.

If you normally do your workouts at 6 a.m. in a fasted state, do your CrossFit Open workout at 6:00 a.m. in a fasted state, says Dr Molloy. Dont all of a sudden decide for the first time ever that youre going to eat breakfast before you work out that wouldnt go very well.

If for some reason youre only able to perform the Open workouts in the evening but youre used to working out in the morning, do a couple of workouts in the evening in the four weeks leading up to the Open to figure out your nutrition plan: what is it like to deal with your nutrition later in the day, how can you appropriately fuel your workouts?

Get a feel of what it is like to work out at a different time and work out how you want to work with your nutrition. Training is the time to sort details out, competition not so much.

Wed like to train like we compete to an extent, with our nutrition at least, says Dr Molloy. Dont do anything new, dont go making crazy changes. Before your first Open workout, dont all of a sudden accept a pre-workout from your gym buddies; its a terrible idea.

Just stick to your routine and know that this has set you up well to do the best in that workout.

If youre the kind of athlete who is used to training around three hours every day, the Open will constitute a big change. Many high level athletes drop their training volume dramatically the week before and throughout the Open to allow for optimal performance.

Instead of long sessions, your focus moves entirely to a single workout. Your training will go from high volume at moderate intensity to a relatively low volume but at really high intensity.

Theres a different way that you have to eat for that, says Dr Molloy. Because your training volume will have decreased significantly especially if youre planning on redoing a workout, as youll take your training easier for a whole three weeks, think to yourself if your total caloric requirement has decreased substantially as well.

I actually see a lot of people that dont really approach this the right way and gain weight through the Open. One, because theyre probably training less, and two, theyre probably stressed out like crazy and eating more food and worse food as a result of it, says Dr Molloy.

Take a moment and think to yourself: how much am I really working out this week compared to how much Im usually working out? recommends Dr Molloy. Maybe, if its a lot less, pull back on your calories a little bit. Nothing crazy, again, we dont want to be eating too little, but you can definitely overdo it with your food over those three weeks.

10 Great Tips for Success in The 2021 CrossFit Open

CrossFit workouts tend to be very high intensity: theyre not notoriously long typically no longer than 25 minutes and they make you hurt a lot. Because of this, there are a few pointers you can take into consideration when it comes to your pre-workout nutrition plan.

Pre-workout nutrition starts the day before, says Dr Molloy. Make sure you have three really solid meals, high quality foods, that youre well hydrated, and that you get to sleep at a reasonable hour especially if youre likely to spend half the night awake praying, being anxious and trying to outsmart the workout.


Anything thats high intensity is fuelled exclusively by glucose; exclusively by carbohydrates, fats really dont matter. The energy for this type of training comes from glucose within the muscle itself, very little is coming from the bloodstream or the liver, but from pre-existing muscle stores.

This is because youre going so fast, the body doesnt even have time to influx carbohydrate to replenish the supplies.

Over the course of these pre-workout meals what youve done is youve made sure that those muscles supplies are topped up, says Dr Molloy. That they have plenty of glycogen, so that when you hit the gas pedal on the workout, your body has all the fuel that needs to give it everything it wants.

It takes over 24 hours to replenish glycogen stores, so to ensure youre topped off you should eat enough the day of the workout and the day before.

If youre doing the CrossFit Open workout in the evening, make sure that your first meal of the day has a good balance of protein, fats and carbohydrates. Dont make huge changes, but stick to your normal routine as much as possible.

For lunch, youll have to be careful about when and what you eat, because there may still be food sitting in your digestive tract as youre getting into the actual workout.

For this meal, I like to keep things relatively straightforward and simplistic, says Dr Molloy. Somewhere between 150 to 200 grams of lean protein mixed with a nice, easy to digest carbohydrate option. In general, this meal might be a little bit lower on the fat side nothing crazy, we dont need to go zero grams of fat so that the food has a nice, easy time digesting and theres nothing thats going to upset your stomach.

Any option that is already processed to a point where your body will easily digest, break down and absorb the food is good.

You dont want to go into the workout feeling too full, so Dr Molloy recommends not having any really big meals within two hours of your CrossFit Open workout, otherwise you might end up seeing the food again after the workout.

Mental stress slows your digestive track down, explains Dr Molloy. If youre on edge and stressed out, your body has to prioritize actions that are necessary for your survival: blood flow to your muscles, oxygen to your lungs. Eating and digesting the food that you had three hours ago is actually a really low priority in that situation, its not necessary for you to survive, so the food just kind of sits there like a brick.

If you typically feel really stressed by the CrossFit Open or similar situations, give yourself a little bit more time to digest than normal, as itll help your body go through that process, and make your foods really easy to digest. This might not be the time for a huge serving of vegetables.

Perform your best!

Work on relaxing your sympathetic nervous system breathing work and meditation work well for many athletes so youre pushed back to your parasympathetic nervous system. This is likely to help your appetite throughout the three weeks of the Open.

Ultimately, try to stick to your routine as much as you possibly can, as this typically leads to the best results during the Open workouts.

People get themselves so wrapped up in these workouts that they completely change everything about their lives for two workouts a week, says Dr Molloy. In that lack of routine everything feels foreign: they dont know how to eat, they dont know how to sleep, they dont know how to warm up, they dont know how to cool down.

Ive found that the athletes that do the best and meet their expectations or exceed them typically just stick to their routine. Theyll go to the gym, theyll workout, theyll eat the same, theyll recover the same on the other days. They just dont worry about lifting the most weight on their back squat, or about going as fast as possible on their 5k run, they just get the work done.

Cognito Therapeutics touts positive Phase 2 results for device-delivered Alzheimer’s treatment – Mobihealth News

Yesterday Cognito Therapeutics, a startup using visual and auditory stimulation to treat neurodegenerative disorders, announced Phase 2 trial results suggesting its gamma frequency neuromodulation therapy slowed declines in memory andcognition among mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease patients.

The OVERTURE study, a multi-center, randomized controlled trial, enrolled 76 such patients aged 50 years or older beginning in 2018. These participants were randomized to receive either Cognito's audio-visual stimulation treatment or a sham stimulation for one hour each dayin their home.

Throughout the six-month treatment period, Cognito said the treatment group (n = 33) compared to the placebo group (n =20) demonstrated a significant 84% slowdown in functional decline and a significant 83% decline in cognitive impairment, as measured using standardized scales every four weeks. In addition, there was a significant61% reduction in whole brain atrophy and volumetric loss among 30 treatment group participants in comparison to 19 placebo group participants, according to the company.

"Our approach has translated into clinical proof of concept by successfully achieving statistically significant results in [Alzheimer's disease], with a potential for disease modification due to significant reduction of cerebral atrophy and volumetric loss,"Dr. Tom Megerian, chief medical officer of Cognito Therapeutics, said in a statement. "In addition to improving functional outcomes, memory and cognition, the 61% reduction in loss of whole brain volume in our Phase 2 study addresses key aspects of [Alzheimer's disease] etiology and disease progression. If these results are replicated in our larger, pivotal trial, this will represent a huge medical breakthrough in Alzheimer's research."

Outside of these top-line results, Cognito is reporting the study results this week at the 2021 AD/PD, a conference on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases and related neurological disorders, and will be holding a virtual panel with executives and researchers on Friday regarding these and prior research data on the treatment.


Cognito's lead product is a device delivering flickering lights and other stimuli to induce gamma oscillations, a pattern of brain waves that research suggests is related to cognition. The startup licensed the technology from MIT researchers and cofounders Li-Huei Tsai and Ed Boyden, and in January of this year received a Breakthrough Device Designation from the FDA.

With these positive results, Cognito saidit will now move forward with a large-scale pivotal clinical trial of the therapy and should that effort pan out as well the FDA approval process.

"With our recent FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, we look forward to expediting the clinical development of what has the promise to be the first disease-modifying digital therapeutic in Alzheimer's disease,"CEO Brent Vaughan said in a statement.


Cognito which brands itself as a digital therapeutic company is joined in the Alzheimer's space by Neuroglee Therapeutics, a Singapore-based startup that raised $2.3 million in pre-seed funding in December to tackle neurodegenerative diseases with artificial intelligence, machine learning and digital biomarkers. Looking further back, Cognito's Breakthrough Device Designation was preceded by neurodegenerative digital therapeutics company Dthera Sciences, which gained the designation in 2018.

Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases have also been a focus for the broader digital health space. Sensors and software from wearables, apps and other tools have been used to spot early cases, leading Biogen and Apple to recently announce a new observational study on the subject.

Language performance as a predictor of future Alzheimer’s disease – National Institute on Aging

Language sample analysis may help predict future Alzheimers disease in people who are cognitively normal, suggesting that language patterns may be an early, detectable biomarker for the disease. Published in EClinicalMedicine, researchers at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center and Pfizer Worldwide Research and Development analyzed written language samples and were able to predict Alzheimers disease more than seven years before the diagnosis.

For the study, researchers used data from 270 participants in the long-running, NIH-funded Framingham Heart Study: 190 participants were in the training set and 80 participants were in the test set. The training set was used to develop the linguistic markers via a type of machine learning called automated linguistic analysis. The test set, determined by those participants whose data had been reviewed thoroughly by a panel of experts to assess their Alzheimers disease status, was used to assess the predictive performance of those linguistic markers in an independent sample.

In particular, for the test set, half of the 80 subjects had developed Alzheimers-like symptoms by age 85 (cases) and half did not (controls). Each of the 270 participants had performed a written picture analysis task when they were cognitively normal. For the training set, the researchers identified 87 language characteristics from the writing samples. They then used models to predict the future development of Alzheimers disease by assessing language performance.

Researchers found that language patterns such as writing short and simple phrases, repeating and misspelling words, and skipping punctuation were associated with future onset of Alzheimers. The language pattern analysis was about 70% accurate in predicting who developed Alzheimers disease. Additionally, combining language sample analysis with more traditional clinical data models, such as neuropsychological test scores, demographic and genetic information, and medical history, increased prediction accuracy from 59% to 69% when language was also included.

The researchers noted that exploring the relationships of linguistic and non-linguistic variables, along with verbal language patterns, may further the development of non-invasive tests for the early detection of Alzheimers.

The Framingham Heart Study Consortium data used in this research was supported in part by NIA grants R01AG016495 and R01AG008122.

These activities relate to NIH's AD+ADRD Research Implementation Milestone 9.H, Launch research programs to develop and validate sensitive neuropsychological and behavioral assessment measures to detect and track the earliest clinical manifestations of AD and AD-related dementias.
