Anti-Aging Foundation Terminates de Grey After Alleged Attempt to Influence Investigation – BioSpace

Anti-aging organization SENS Research Foundation sacked Chief Science Officer Aubrey de Grey over concerns he has attempted to influence an investigation of sexual harassment claims filed against him.

On Sunday, the foundation issued a statement that announced its decision to part ways with de Grey. The foundation said an investigation into de Greys conduct began in June. Recently, de Grey reached out to one of the participants in the investigation via email, which the foundations board of directors took as an attempt to apply pressure on that individual. As a result, the SENS Research Foundation board unanimously and with what it called heavy hearts decided to part ways with de Grey immediately.

We cannot overstate how deeply Dr. de Grey has shaped this Foundation since its founding; his impact on the SENS Research Foundation is indelible. This separation is not a decision we took lightly. It was, however, necessary, the board said in a statement.

Allegations against de Grey were made public earlier this month. Celine Halioua, founder and chief executive officer of biotech startup Loyal, made allegations against de Grey in a blog post earlier this month. Halioua said that while she worked as an intern at SENS in 2016 she was paraded in front of the foundations donors. Later, she claimed that de Grey made inappropriate comments to her. As BioSpace previously reported, Halioua wrote that de Grey told her she was a glorious woman who had a responsibility to have sex with donors to SENS.

Additionally, she charged that another executive at SENS harassed her so severely that I eventually dropped out of my Ph.D. to escape him.

Halioua wasnt the only one to raise allegations against de Grey. Laura Deming, the founder of the Longevity Fund, claimed that de Grey would talk to her of his adventurous love life.

De Grey has denied the harassment claims. In public posts, he has suggested the two women were deceived setup by someone else to supposedly bring him down. In a Facebook post this weekend, de Grey admitted he reached out to Halioua through a mutual friend to impress upon her that information in her possession that would identify the true guilty party/parties should be divugled (sic), somehow, as soon as possible, so that she would not appear to be hindering the investigation by protecting that person.

In his Facebook post, de Grey included what he said was the text of the email to the mutual friend, which includes the phrase that Haliouas career is absolutely over as things stand. But he then goes on to say her career will be fine because hes a man of honour (sic) who refuses to let somebody be burned at the stake while an actual villian (sic) gets away scot free and is thereby emboldened.

He said his email was an attempt to get Halioua to divulge information regarding the alleged unnamed third party who has attempted to set up de Grey. Regardless, the email was seen by the independent investigator as an attempt to influence the investigation in de Greys favor, which resulted in the termination.

De Grey closed his Facebook statement suggesting he is in a position to launch another anti-aging foundation and proceed as if nothing had happened. But he noted that is not his plan. The plan, de Grey said, is to get the truth known, my foundation back, and the bad actors excised from our community.

The investigation remains ongoing. The board said it will provide updates if and when it is appropriate to do so.

If Chers song about turning back time makes you mourn the loss of your skins youth, then its time to dry up those tears and go shopping for a new face cream with promising results. At an affordable price of $39, this face moisturizer packs a punch, and reviewers such as April M. have declared that they would stop paying for overpriced products. Im 38-years-old, I have tried lotions from every kind of brand across every price range from $5-$150, she said. This is hands down the BEST face lotion I have tried, while another reviewer said this product is priced where I dont have to live without itwhich is a very good thing.

This hydrating formula includes face plumping components such as a proprietary blend of Dermaxyl & MATRIXYL, which are advanced peptides designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and create firmer, smoother skin. Glycolic Acid is an added component, which penetrates the skin quickly and gently exfoliates dead skin cells giving your skin that youthful glow. Margery G. said, I love the way it sinks into my skin. I also love that it has natural ingredients. Keeps my skin soft and smooth.

Reviewers love that this moisturizer absorbs swiftly into the skin while offering instant results of plumper, hydrated skin. One 60-year-old reviewer exclaimed, My skin was literally drinking it in. This multi-beneficial product also helps combat dark spots as one reviewer observed, the 3 little brown spots were fading, after regular use. Another tell-tale sign of aging are neck wrinkles, but as one 65-year-old reviewer admitted, shes waving goodbye to those lines, This is my second jar, and the wrinkles/rings on my neck really seem to be diminishing.

A bonus feature of the Actives Glyco-Peptide Anti Wrinkle Moisturizer is the cleverly designed and hygienic signature airless pump, which is great for decreasing dirt and bacteria contamination inside the container as well as protecting the active ingredients of the moisturizer to remain preserved and unspoiled from the outside elements.

Turning back the hands of time is just one of many results that occur with regular use of goPure Beauty products. As a clean skincare brand, they prioritize ingredients like water, aloe, shea butter, lavender and rosemary and have eliminated dehydrating alcohols and unneeded fragrances in their formulas. They pride themselves on using clinically tested ingredients that activate natural skin cell reproduction. One happy reviewer said, I have been using this moisturizer for a year now and my skin look amazing. I am 41-years-old but no one can tell my age, they thought I was 28.

With more than 1,300 reviews, this anti-wrinkle cream speaks for itself with customers singing their praises. After turning 50, my skin really started to look thin and old. The anti-wrinkle moisturizer made a huge difference and lasts all day. It improved the quality of my skin tone and has a fresh clean scent. Another reviewer added, Its the only moisturizer I use. My skin has never looked so good since my 20s.

Protests in Berlin for and against coronavirus restrictions – Your Valley

Posted: at 1:50 am

Associated Press

BERLIN (AP) Protesters filled the German capital again on Saturday to demonstrate against the governments coronavirus measures, despite bans against several gatherings.

Police had banned nine planned demonstrations for Saturday, including one from the Stuttgart-based Querdenker movement, the most visible anti-lockdown movement in Germany, which united a disparate mix of those opposing vaccinations, coronavirus deniers and right-wing extremists. A court ruled in favor of allowing one event, planned for 500 people, on Saturday and Sunday.

Still, like the last round of protests in early August, thousands ignored the bans and turned out to voice their opposition to government measures. With chants of We are the people! the protesters made their way through Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte neighborhoods.

More than 2,000 police officers were stationed around the city to respond to those who showed up despite the bans. At one protest Saturday evening in Mitte, German media reported that police used pepper spray to disperse a crowd unwilling to leave once the protest had ended. The crowd eventually thinned as it began to rain.

Meanwhile, a counter-protest complete with techno music drew a crowd of several thousand as well. Those demonstrators back government restrictions to slow the spread of virus and oppose the Querdenker movement, stressing Berlins diversity and advocating for more social cohesion.

Berlin police said they dispersed the counter-protesters when the crowd became too big to allow for social distancing.

The Saturday protests came amid a debate in Germany about whether to impose restrictions on unvaccinated people, a question taking on more urgency as daily infections rise. Germany reported 10,303 new daily infections on Saturday, up more than 2,000 since last week.

Similar protests took place in Berlin in early August, which ended in clashes with police and hundreds of people detained.

Natural Skincare And Makeup Are Unregulated Heres What That Means – Scary Mommy

Posted: at 1:50 am

scary Mommy and Jonathan Storey/Getty

Recently I overhauled my skincare and makeup collection. For years Id been burning through leftover samples from my long-ago days as a makeup artist. Buttimes have changed since then, and so have my skins needs.Shopping for new productsin the age of natural everythingand finding the right skincare has been complicated to navigate. Why? Because natural isnt the same from brand to brand. Its great to sayIm going all-naturalas you toss the latest trending skincare into your basket, but is it really natural? What does natural even mean?

When we say natural skincare and makeup products are unregulated, it means that there is no black-and-white universal standard. Basically, we dont really know what it means because there isnt a set criteria. And Im not talking about lead-based lipsticks or any of the natural makeup hacks our long-ago ancestors employed.Yes, mercury-laced skin-lightening products, Im looking at you.

Thankfully, today we have theNatural Products Association (NPA)who developed the Natural Standard and Certification for Personal Care Products, a set of guidelines that dictate whether a product can be deemed truly natural. Those guidelines look at what the product is made out of and how safe those ingredients are. They also look at the practices people use to test these products. Lastly, they consider how sustainable the ingredients are, as well as the packaging.

What comes to your mind when you hear natural ingredients? Things found in nature, right? Like avocados. They are delicious on toast and tacos, great in smoothies, but on your face? Well. I mean, its not the worst thing you could use. Unless you are allergic to avocado (my sincerest condolences). So avocado is safe, but I bet you that isnt the only ingredient making up your all natural avocado moisturizer. I actually have such an eye cream. Not because it was natural but because it was a free sample (and, who doesnt love free samples?).

This particular cream claims it contains 98% natural ingredients. At first glance, you might think the only ingredients are avocado oil and hyaluronic acid. Thats pretty natural. But apparently, those are not the only ingredients involved. There are 25 other ingredients that make up the entire product. Now Im not a chemist, so I dont know what all these ingredients are. Someone, somewhere, once upon a time, told me if I couldnt pronounce the ingredients in my food, then I shouldnt be eating it.Because obvi, not natural ingredients.Should the same go for our skincare?

Equally important, where are they getting their ingredients from? Nothing screams natural like responsibly sourced ingredients. What do we mean by responsibly sourced? It means the ingredients being grown and harvested in a way that doesnt negatively impact the people doing the work or the environment. Which does not just stop at the product itself. The containers and packaging that hold your product should be eco-friendly, recyclable, or biodegradable to fit the natural criteria.

Are you annoyed yet? Because Im annoyed having to use quotations around everything weve discussed as natural.. This is done intentionally because that natural granola vibe looks different for everyone.

Natural has been a buzzword in the beauty industry for a while now. And everyone has a different spin on it. Some companies slap natural on their products as a marketing technique. Others formulate and carry products that keep in mind the guidelines set by the NPA. According toinformation from the NPA,if your product has a third-party label from the NPA or USDAs certified organic, its more likely that the product youre investing in is indeed natural.

In the end, when it comes to deciding what kinds of skincare and makeup products you want to include in your routine, youve got to do what is best for you. Does your skin produce more oil than most? Or is it painfully dry and crepe-y (raises hand)? What about line, wrinkle, and anti-aging concerns? Keep in mind that not all chemicals used in skincare (natural or otherwise) are bad when used in moderation.

While there is nothing wrong with trying to use fewer additives, chemicals, and more natural ingredients, be aware that youll still have to do your homework. Unlike eating an all-natural diet, where you can see and prepare your own food from scratch, skincare and makeup are an entirely different and more complicated beast. Before investing in natural products, make sure you can answer the questions:

Do I know what is in this, and is it safe? Are the ingredients being used sourced ethically? Are the product and packaging eco-friendly? Has this company gotten a third-party seal of approval?

But, most importantly, is this what my skin needs? I know my skin needs hydration and some fine line and anti-wrinkle action. So please excuse me while I go slather and dab my skin in products that work best for me. Yes, including a little natural avocado eye cream, because who doesnt love avocado?

The One Vitamin Dermatologists Say You Should Be Taking Over 40 To Improve Wrinkles And Elasticity – SheFinds

Posted: at 1:50 am

There may not be a magic pill that instantly improves the look of fine lines and wrinkles, but good nutrition can mean the difference of a few years on your skin. Dermatologists and skincare experts agree that consuming the right vitamins and minerals can help promote a more youthful appearance to the skin by keeping it hydrated and nourished from within.

So we turned to the experts to find out which vitamin is the best when it comes to anti-aging skincare, and the answer was no surprise. Hands down, vitamin C is the best supplement you can add to your diet to improve elasticity and smooth out wrinkles. No wonder so many beauty companies have been making vitamin C serums, moisturizers and masks.

It turns out that vitamin C is really as beneficial as everyone thought. This one vitamin can hydrate the skin for a younger-looking and smoother complexion.

These Probiotic Pills Are The Easiest Way To Improve Gut Health & Get More Energy

Vitamin C provides a range of benefits, from evening out your skin tone, reducing pigmentation, shielding skin from the visible impacts of pollution, significantly improving hydration, and keeping your skin looking younger," Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank, celebrity cosmetic dermatologist in NYC and author of The Pro-Aging Playbook, told SheFinds.

It is very easy to get more vitamin C in your diet. Eat more citrus fruits or simply add a citrus juice to your routine every day. Just make sure whatever you're having with vitamin C isn't very high in added sugars, which may prematurely age the skin.

You can also get vitamin C from bell peppers, strawberries, tomatoes and broccoli.

The fountain of youth, debunked again | News, Sports, Jobs – The Express – Lock Haven Express

Posted: at 1:50 am

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have always been a proponent of the attitude that no matter how much you make yourself look younger on the outside, you are still aging on the inside. I read a recent article on the benefits of the supplement NAD+, which describes the inside anti-aging benefits. It appears that there are quite a few. I am very interested in your take on this. K.R.

ANSWER: NAD+ is a coenzyme that is critical for basic function of the cell. One major function is in the energy-producing cycles in the mitochondria.

ATP is the basic energy currency of the cell. NAD+ is reduced back to NADH in a process called oxidative phosphorylation. This process produces energy in the form of ATP. A certain amount of NAD+ is needed for the system to work, and adding more is not necessary. However, NAD+ and NADH have many more jobs, in and out of the mitochondria.

It is true that as animals age both mice, and to a lesser extent, humans have been studied NAD+ levels tend to decrease. This seems to relate to increased destruction of NAD by the cell. Raising NAD+ directly requires intravenous supplementation, but there are NAD+ donors, such as nicotinamide riboside, that will increase NAD+ levels when given orally. Trials in mice have shown some benefits in cellular function, such as improved ability to metabolize sugar. There is not yet any good evidence that NAD+ supplementation in humans leads to any clinical benefit. Studies are ongoing, and nicotinamide riboside may be useful in treatment of some diseases.

However, there is evidence that while NAD+ may help mitochondria in our cells (a potentially anti-aging effect), it may also increase cancer cell growth. Studies in mice have shown increased rates of developing pancreatic cancer in mice genetically predisposed to do so.

Finally, supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration to the same levels that pharmaceutical drugs are, and there is no guarantee that any supplement you are taking, such as nicotinamide riboside, has an accurate amount listed on the bottle.

Although I would love to be proven wrong, I dont think that NAD+ is the fountain of youth as some of its supporters have touted. I dont recommend taking the supplement until much more information is available about the benefits and risks of long-term use. When a person is taking a drug or supplement to prevent disease, and they have no symptoms to treat, the evidence needed to prove benefits outweigh risks needs to be very strong.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Do people develop fewer colds as they age? If so, why? Im 78 and havent had a cold for at least 25 years. J.S.B.

ANSWER: It is true that older people usually have fewer colds as they age, but that is largely due to being exposed less frequently. The immune system also is likely to have been exposed to many more viruses as we age, but unfortunately, for some viruses, one can never get high-level immunity to; others have so many different strains that its likely you will get exposed to one your immune system doesnt know.

Top 3 Healthy Habits to Prevent Wrinkles – elegantislandliving.net – elegantislandliving.net

Posted: at 1:50 am

Wrinkles have a reputation for creeping up on us when we least expect, but its never too late to start preventing future wrinkles. Here are the top 3 healthy habits to prevent wrinkles from our local skin experts at Atlantic Shore Dermatology, a Forefront Dermatology practice.

1. Rain or shine, summer or winter, put on the sunscreen and shade your face.

Reminders about the importance of sunscreen may sound like a broken record, but honestly the sun and its UV rays are the number one reason your skin may be aging faster than it should be. No matter whether its snowing, raining, or blazing heat, those pesky UV rays can get through the clouds. According to board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Ashley Cavalier, By taking minimal actions like wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher, wearing a hat with a wide brim and sticking to shaded areas, you can drastically reduce the damage the sun is doing to your skin, and in turn decrease the rate at which your skin will age.

2. Watch your sugar and carb intake.

If you have a sweet tooth or love pasta night, our skin specialists have bad news for you. Sugar and refined carbohydrates cause transient elevation of blood sugar levels. These sugar spikes can damage and tangle your collagen by causing glycation and cross linking of the collagen fibers in your dermis, the deep layer of your skin. This weakening of the collagen support structure leads to less pliable skin, sagging and wrinkles. Try to choose healthier options as much as possible. Curb your cravings by drinking more water and eating foods high in antioxidants such as blueberries, cranberries, grapes, and spinach.

3. Get your beauty sleep.

The phrase beauty sleep was coined for a reason, noted Dr. Cavalier. Sleep allows your body a chance to heal and repair. Its also the time when your skin cells produce most of your collagen. Your sleep positions can also affect the potential for wrinkles. By sleeping on your face, the repeated compression restricts blood flow to your skin, resulting in weaker skin that is more likely to develop sleep creases and wrinkles. Lastly, always remember to wash your face before bedtime. Leaving makeup and environmental dirt, which you likely dont even realize is there, on your skin all night will never do your skin any favors.

When it comes to the best ways to treat your current wrinkles, Atlantic Shore Dermatology has you covered! Here are some of the options they offer:

Anti-wrinkle Creams

These creams are designed to both prevent wrinkles from occurring and to reduce the appearance of those that have formed. Many anti-aging creams are known as pro-collagen creams that contain ingredients to promote your skins collagen production, which naturally declines as you age. Topical retinoids are a good first-line treatment for photo-aging. Anti-wrinkle creams containing antioxidants, vitamin C , hyaluronic acid, or plant extracts are also good adjuncts to retinoids. Stop by their St. Simons Island office at 7000 Wellness Way, Suite 7120 or check out their online store at atlanticshoredermatology.com for anti-aging skin care products.

Chemical Peels

A great, non-invasive option, chemical peels help remove dull surface cells, improve fine lines and wrinkles, and reduce sunspots and discoloration, Dr. Cavalier described. They also enhance collagen production and remove the top layer of the skin revealing a smoother, more radiant complexion. There are multiple different strengths of chemical peels that range from surface level peels to deeper peels. A consultation with your dermatology office will help determine which type of chemical peels will best target your needs.

Preventative Neuromodulators

BotoxandDysport, are fantastic cosmetic treatments for facial wrinkles. These products are purified substances safely derived from bacteria and are used to relax facial muscles, softening the expressions that cause wrinkling of the skin over time, explained Dr. Cavalier. They are commonly placed on the forehead, frown lines and crows feet next to eyes. These neuromodulators can also be used off-label on the lower face with the lip flip which can relax the skin above the top lip to smooth the lines and give the lip a fuller look. These injection procedures are best performed at the office of a board-certified dermatologist with extensive experience in performing these techniques. They will be able to determine what is best for you once learning what your skin goals are.

Dermal Fillers

Another great treatment for reducing wrinkles and providing a more youthful appearance is dermal fillers. added Dr. Cavalier. Instead of relaxing the muscles they fill the lines and creases to smooth your skin. Fillers are versatile and can be used to lift the cheeks and jowls, and smooth and soften the lines on the lower face. Fillers can last between 6 to 18 months, giving you fast results at a fraction of the cost of a facelift. Depending on your skin goals, it is common for neuromodulators and dermal fillers to be used in conjunction with each other.

Microneedling, Laser and Light-based Energy Devices

Effective collagen boosting medical procedures to firm and regenerate the skin include microneedling, and the use of laser or light-based energy devices. These work by triggering the healing cascade in your skin to stimulate new and youthful collagen. Lasers use the technology of selective photothermolysis. Experienced providers Rachel Hawkins Duncan, PA-C; Hannah Davis, NP-C; Lindsey Gross Jones, PA-C; and Ashley Cavalier, M.D. at Atlantic Shore Dermatology can accurately diagnose skin conditions to help choose and safely perform the best laser treatments for you. Whether it is treating unwanted age spots, broken capillaries, or zapping unwanted hair or tattoos, theyve got you covered!

When youre ready to say bye-bye to your wrinkles, the skin experts at Atlantic Shore Dermatology are ready to help. Call 912.634.4966 today and schedule a consultation to find the best plan for your skin goals.

Setting the Gold Standard in Minority-Owned Beauty – The Atlanta Voice

Posted: at 1:50 am

Aurum79 is a Black woman-owned marketplace that is currently the home for 20 brands and 99 products.

All of the beauty and wellness brands that theyre partnered with are owned and operated by black and brown people.

Their website features wellness products, makeup, skincare, nail care, hair care, and even candles with a range of $5-75 per product.

Aurum79s founders Nathalie Day, Bridget Harris and Camille Walker, all have backgrounds in beauty and marketing. They came together when Harris was searching for a minority-owned sunscreen for a trip in 2018 but couldnt find it in stores.

The women conducted a proprietary survey of women across the United States with several minority-owned brands to see if the participants had ever heard of them. The overwhelming result was that they hadnt.

Even now, there are other places and brands where you can find black-owned brands, Walker said. There are still a lot of people who dont have that awareness Theres a huge opportunity to share some of these artisanal brands that are black and brown owned.

The goal for Aurum79 is to bridge the gap between minority-owned products and consumers.

Its really a place where you can discover the dopest, most effective beauty and wellness products made by people of color, Harris said.

After coming up with the idea for an online marketplace for black and brown-owned brands in 2018, the founders of Aurum79 then began creating a business plan in 2019.

We knew that at the top of 2020, we wanted to start reaching out [to the different brands], Harris said. We wanted to establish some kind of presence, so we did our long-form business plan for the first half of 2019 and that summer is when we launched on Instagram.

In November 2020, Aurum79 officially launched. While they were excited about starting their business, the founders were also nervous about becoming a hub for black and brown-owned businesses.

2020 was great because it gave us that push to keep going and do this, but it was a little bit scary because there was so much in the aftermath of COVID-19, Harris said.

As they approach the websites one-year mark, Harris and Walker have plenty of visions for the future. Now theyve grown from working with just eight brands to 20, theyre less focused on the acquisition of more brands and products.

I think that a lot of the mass retailers [are] becoming more expansive towards inclusion, said Harris. Our virtual shelf space is dedicated to black and brown-owned beauty products. Thats what we really want to be known for.

I think this year were just trying to work on visibility and getting our contacts together, Walker said. We have a good mix of products across all of the different categories. I think now its about getting more people to learn about our products, more about what we do, educating them on the different products and ingredients. Its just about keeping that momentum going.

One major goal that Harris and Walker plan on achieving is changing the narrative for products that target women over the age of 35. Harris feels as though most brands target the younger generations, but more focus should be placed on the older generations.

We really want to continue to focus on skincare and focus on the 35 plus [age group] and change the narrative around anti-aging, Harris said. Im guilty of it too. Im always looking for an anti-aging product. And what is that? Because if youre not aging, then youre dead, and thats not cute. So, its more pro-aging. I want to age like a boss, I want to look good.

Walker doesnt want women who are 35-years-old and older to feel left out of the beauty industry. She believes they should be able to stay on-trend in their way. Walker also hopes to conquer an obstacle that the company is currently facing.

From my point of view, my personal goal for the brand is to be a one-stop shop for black and brown-owned beauty, Walker said. And [a] one-stop shop for everybody. Not just Black people, [but] Latina, Asian- really for everyone. I think one of the major hurdles were trying to get over is to let people know who are not melanated that they can use these products. It works for them. The colors will work on their skin tone too.

Harris agrees that while black and brown consumers are prioritized, other races and ethnicities are more than welcome to shop with Aurum79.

[We want to be] the gold standard of black and brown beauty, Harris said. With the exception of maybe hair, just because its black-owned doesnt mean its only for black people.
