Why the RCGP was wrong to describe Covid-19 as a ‘lifestyle disease’ – Pulse

Posted: July 4, 2020 at 2:44 am

An RCGP virtual conference titled Covid-19: A lifestyle disease and the vital role GPs have in beating it set medical Twitter ablaze over the weekend. The agenda included useful talks to help GPs with video consultations and how best to utilise community assets.

I have no doubt that the day was useful for the doctors attending, as well as for their patients. However, the controversy that arose was specifically around terming Covid-19 a lifestyle disease.

According to the PHE report from earlier this month, living in a deprived area doubled your chances of dying from the virus. Working as a security guard, taxi driver or being a lower skilled worker (many of whom have been clapped and celebrated along with NHS workers during this pandemic) was also bad news. Belonging to an ethnic minority increased your risk of death between 10% and 50%.

These statistics might suggest why people took offence to the conference title, as most of the risk factors are non-modifiable. Ethnicity, sex and being poor are not lifestyle choices, and to suggest otherwise is offensive and disrespectful to those who have died from the disease.

The report also revealed that having diabetes or hypertension also increased your risk of dying. Most people dont actively choose to be unhealthy - we know its a mix of environmental and genetic factors.

Of course, individual behaviour and lifestyle are important, and it would be irresponsible to deny their role in illness. However, by terming Covid-19 a lifestyle disease, we run the risk of shifting the locus of blame to lie within the patient, rather than seeing it as a complex interplay between constitutional, social, political, and economic factors.

We run the risk of shifting the locus of blame to lie within the patient

My point extends to a wider critique of lifestyle medicine, an emerging specialty which is generating an ever-increasing number of Instagram doctors who proselytise multi-pillar plans and dietary guides to keep you healthy and glowing through self-care. According to the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, the specialty promotes physical, emotional, environmental and social determinants of disease operat[ing] within a boundary of evidence-informed medicine. This sounds a lot like holistic general practice to me.

I have no doubt that the speakers and chairs planned this event with the aim of helping patients. I know theyre as passionate about social determinants as they are about exercise and lifestyle. However, semantics matter and sometimes you dont see the issue until its pointed out.

Tellingly, a college rep who was on the events steering committee wasnt aware it was happening until the day itself, and said he would like an audit, endeavouring to find answers.

With over 43,500 dead in the UK already and counting, this was a poorly-titled event delivered to the profession, many of whom are at risk due to non-modifiable factors and not lifestyle choices.

Going forward, I do hope that event organisers take the time to consider marketing and the power of language, so the potency of their aims are not lost.

Does COVID 19 emphasise the significance of lifestyle medicine more than ever? – Express Healthcare

Posted: at 2:44 am

The COVID 19 pandemic has left us all thinking about ways and means to reduce the risk of contracting the virus. The concern is indeed befitting. COVID-19 has a case-fatality rate estimated between 2-4 per cent (compared to <1 per cent for seasonal influenza) and as high as 20 per cent in those over 80 years old. Those with comorbidities are especially vulnerable. Therefore, we have all learnt the significance of practising adequate social distancing, proper hand hygiene etc. In the midst of the global conversation around these essential measures, the role of lifestyle medicine seems to have been mentioned infrequently, yet it is one of the most important areas many healthcare providers are now focussing on. Dr V Mohan, Chairman and Chief Diabetologist of Dr Mohans Diabetes Specialities shares insights on the concept of lifestyle medicine in clinical practice in a chat with Raelene Kambli

How have you been dealing with this COVID- 19 situation?

COVID-19 has proved to be one of the greatest challenges that this world has faced, perhaps in the last 100 years. It has disrupted the lives of almost everyone. People have lost their jobs, money and many have lost their lives due to COVID-19. Personally, I have been locked down in my home for three months. However, I converted this into an opportunity, and instead of getting depressed, I decided to make full use of it. Hence, I increased everything that I had been doing and also learned many new skills. I could eat healthier, do more exercise, increase my spirituality and also was able to work much harder, seeing a lot of patients through telemedicine. I was able to write several research papers. So I have no regrets as I found I could make full use of the COVID-19 situation, despite all the bad things that we keep hearing all around us.

How have your patients responded during these times?

For the first month, in April, we had to completely close down our centres and hence patients could not come. Luckily, the Government of India legalised telemedicine. Hence, we found new ways of reaching out to our patients. We sent our teams home to collect blood samples from patients and teleconsultations were arranged. Patients found this to be a great boon. Although we could never match the usual number of patients that we see in a day, we were able to service up to 30 -40 per cent of our usual patients in this manner. Patients have been extremely understanding and have responded very well. In a recent research paper that we published, we reported that many of them looked after their diabetes better and improved their diabetes control during this period.

Given the current situation and emphasis that we now lay on our health and holistic healing of body, improving immunity etc., how do you think the concept of lifestyle medicine will take flight?

This situation has emphasised more than anything else in the past, that holistic healing of the body and mind is very important. People who had never thought about immunity, are now all talking about improving their immunity. However, they think of it as a quick fix which they can get by just swallowing a pill which will give them all the immunity that they need. In my videos which I have published on YouTube, I have shown how one needs to go far beyond that. To improve ones immunity, one has to eat healthily, exercise more, reduce stress, sleep on time, and also control chronic disorders like diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Only if all these are done, does the immunity improve in the body.

As an endocrinologist, how does lifestyle medicine fit into your scope of care provision?

As a diabetes specialist, I am convinced that lifestyle medicine is the most important factor in controlling diabetes. Even if one takes ones medicines regularly, if one does not modify ones lifestyle, diabetes can get very badly out of control. To give an example, if one is stressed, sugar levels can go through the roof. An unhealthy diet can either produce diabetes or worsen diabetes. Similarly, a lack of exercise can lead to obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Hence, lifestyle factors, or what you refer to as lifestyle medicine, is very important.

From a clinical perspective, how does lifestyle medicine become a unique concept?

Lifestyle medicine is a combination of several factors. It includes eating a healthy diet, improving physical activity, and doing enough physical exercise, reducing weight wherever there is overweight or obesity, and getting good quality sleep. The fact that during COVID-19, the number of heart attacks in India came down and that many of my patients actually controlled their diabetes better, shows the power of lifestyle medicine.

How are you educating your patients on how to live a healthy lifestyle? What are the lifestyle medicine solutions that providers need to offer?

One of the important factors in chronic disorders like diabetes is that one needs to constantly motivate and coach patients. Just prescribing a diet or asking people to exercise is not enough. One should be a mentor and a coach and be empathetic to them, as this is a lifelong condition. Moreover, instead of finding fault with them or making them feel guilty, if one empathises with them and encourages them, we can see remarkable improvements in compliance with a healthy lifestyle. Many organisations try to convert this into a business model by charging patients for a healthy lifestyle. We dont do that at our centre, because we feel that diet and exercise is part of the treatment that the patient already pays for and hence, at every visit, we emphasise the importance of healthy living. This has definitely helped to improve the compliance to lifestyle in our patients.

How can one go about measuring the rate of patient satisfaction and health outcomes using lifestyle medicine?

There are many scales which can be used to assess the quality of life. The WHO has a short question as well as a long question. These are specific questions which ask about patient satisfaction level and assess the patients quality of life. Health outcomes can, of course, be measured in quantitative terms by looking at the blood sugar, lipid Profile, eg. cholesterol and triglyceride levels, blood pressure control, bodyweight of the individual and other metabolic parameters. In our speciality of diabetology, it is quite easy to assess the health outcomes, as there are robust, quantifiable, health outcome measures. One of the recent developments is what is called continuous glucose monitoring or ambulatory glucose profile, which measures what percentage of the day that the patients sugar is under control. We call it Time in Range. The Time in Range should be at least 70 per cent if one is to prevent complications.

In times to come, what would you recommend people to do to resort to lifestyle changes in order to stay healthy?

COVID has taught us that if one remains healthy, even if one is exposed to a deadly disease like COVID-19, the chances of improved outcomes and survival is much more than those who adopt very poor lifestyles and have chronic diseases. Hence, I would recommend the following, in my speciality:

A regular check-up is very much needed because otherwise the outcomes cannot be measured and people tend to slip up and develop what is called as clinical inertia which is the main root of complications related to diabetes.

Lastly, what is your perspective on the integration of Ayush into lifestyle medicine and the use of nutraceutical?

The Ayush system is a very broad term and encompasses Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy etc. So, one cannot generalise about Ayush. Each one of them has their own benefits and Ayurveda and Yoga lay a lot of emphasis on lifestyle modification, stress reduction, yoga and pranayama. These are obviously very healthy and there is nothing Ayush about them. I think everybody should do these and even allopathic medicine has accepted these measures. Nutraceuticals should be used only when necessary and under the prescription of a doctor, as some of them can have side effects. I would not uniformly advise everyone to take it without the proper medical prescription, guidance and check-up.

Are We Getting Too Much Health Care? – The New York Times

If you have ever been ill, you know it is long-established, well-cultivated medical relationships that sustain and give comfort and emotional strength. That relationship needs regular attention and needs to develop over time. Medicine is not Jiffy Lube. It is about people and relationships, and both need careful nurturing.

Stephanie TaylorCarmel, Calif. The writer, a doctor, practices holistic medicine.

To the Editor:

Dr. Sandeep Jauhar is on to something. Americans have hugely overmedicalized everyday life and normal aging. Many of my contemporaries are desperately seeking medical help because (in their seventh decade) they just dont have the same energy as at 30, or because they have developed a few little aches and pains. None of them have any expectation that their cars, computers or cellphones will survive in prime pristine condition until the end. So why should their shoulders, knees, hearts or brains?

I would expect to find that many, or perhaps most, of the millions of elective treatments postponed because of Covid-19 were for lifestyle rather than health reasons. Lets start using our vaunted wisdom of age by looking more honestly at our expectations. After nearly 70 years, I cant imagine why anyone would harbor any expectation of life with no inconveniences, difficulties or annoyances. We need to stop trying to fix normalcy.

David VanderpoolCincinnati

To the Editor:

No rushing for the train, bus, airplane, no fuming in traffic, no regulating the day by some corporate idea of work schedules, no packed elevators. No wonder most people with nagging health issues and chronic conditions are doing all right, as Dr. Sandeep Jauhar says. Maybe better than they were before the pandemic struck.

Had the medical profession unfairly been profiting from some unnecessary appointments, procedures, monitoring? Possibly. But those people whose work life stopped or took a homeward turn, in spite of major inconveniences, financial woes, and the loneliness and boredom of staying home month after month, have in the main been living a far less stressful life.

Southern Oregon businesses settle with state over unproven COVID-19 treatments – KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

Posted: at 6:56 am

MEDFORD, Ore. Six Oregon companies and medical practitioners, including three from southern Oregon, were cited on Friday by the state attorney general for promoting unproven COVID-19 treatments.

Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum stated the companies were selling and advertising products and services as a so-called Covid-19 cure' and were advertising in a way that told people they were selling to boost immunity and keep people healthy from the virus.

The attorney generals office said all the claims were unproven scientifically or were not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Center for Disease Control, or even the World Health Organization.

Understandably, people are scared about contracting Covid-19 and these companies and clinics preyed on that fear. We would all love an easy fix or a cure to Covid-19, but companies cannot sell something that has not been approved by the CDC or the FDA, said Attorney General Rosenblum in a statement. Selling false promises could have dangerous consequences to somebodys health and give people a false sense of security.

The three companies cited in southern Oregon were Ashland Natural Medicine and Holistic Health Acupuncture in Ashland and Heirloom Organics in Grants Pass.

The Ashland businesses were both cited for promoting herbal remedies that were useful in alleviating or preventing illness. Heirloom Organics was marked for selling protection kits ranging from about $170 to nearly $500. Each kit had face masks and biohazard gear that the company said were approved by the CDC or the WHO to protect specifically against COVID-19. The attorney generals office said those claims were inaccurate.

Oftentimes they were some sort of natural oils or herbal products, something like that that supposedly cured or reduced likelihood of contracting Covid-19, said Chuck Harwood, regional director of the Federal Trade Commission.

Each company was sent a warning letter from the FTC telling them to cease all sales and advertisements of the products or services. The commission says its received over 1,100 complaints regarding COVID-related trade issues. Athird of those involved false advertising of products.

Theyre making those representations based on no scientific analysis on whether the product actually works on COVID-19, said Harwood. Covid-19 is just too new to have the kinds of studies youd expect to see people doing.

The commission has sent some 250 warning letters to businesses across the country including those in Oregon. The FTC says this type of fake advertising becomes more common during national emergencies as peoples fears and concerns cloud their normal judgement. Harwood says theyve seen this type of issue pop up after instances like 9-11 but the degree of products being peddled for a pandemic of this magnitude is unprecedented.

Were scared, were not sure whats happening and I think in that situation people are willing to take a few more risks, said Harwood. So we are seeing people that are trying products, things, treatments maybe they wouldnt try in other circumstances.

The companies cited have settled with the Oregon attorney general. They can no longer promote claims their products can provide cure to Covid-19. So far, there is still no cure for this virus.

The FTC asks that if you have a complaint about a company that is citing products that can cure COVID-19, report to your state attorney general or the FTC page online.

To report Covid-19 related fraud, call 877-877-9392 or file a complaint online atwww.OregonConsumer.gov. Consumers who have concerns about price gouging are encouraged to call the DOJs price gouging hotline at 503-378-8442.

Hundreds test positive for COVID-19 at Tyson Foods plant in Noel, Mo. – KY3

Posted: at 6:56 am

NOEL, Mo. -- Hundreds of Tyson Foods employees from a plant in Noel, Missouri have tested positive for COVID-19.

On Friday, Tyson Foods released the results of COVID-19 testing at its plant in Noel. near the southwest Missouri state line.

According to a news release, more than 1,100 team members were tested for COVID-19 between June 17-19.

Test results determined 291 people tested positive, and 249 of those cases did not show any symptoms prior to testing. Additionally, the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services identified 80 cases from the plant from local health care providers.

Tyson Foods issued the following statement Friday:

Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE:TSN) today announced the results of facility-wide testing for COVID-19 at its poultry facility in Noel, Missouri, one of more than 40 U.S. locations where the companys extensive program of prevention and testing for the coronavirus is helping to contain the risk of community spread.

Of the 1,142 team members who were tested onsite at the Noel facility from June 17 to June 19, 291 tested positive, of whom 249 or more than 85% did not show any symptoms and otherwise would not have been identified. This is in addition to 80 positive cases identified among individuals who work at the facility by the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services or when seeking care through their own health care providers. Team members who test positive receive paid leave during the quarantine period and may return to work only when they have met the criteria established by both the CDC and Tyson.

Tyson believes that large-scale testing protects its team members, helps prevent the spread of COVID-19 in local communities and helps maintain a reliable food supply chain. The company is also using sophisticated predictive tools to monitor areas of the country where hotspots could emerge.

To date, Tyson has conducted almost 40,000 tests throughout the country, covering more than one-third of its U.S.-based team members, in one of the largest corporate-sponsored testing programs in the United States. Testing at the Noel facility was done in partnership with MATRIX MEDICAL, a leading medical clinical services company.

We are pleased that Tyson was able to effectively use the box-in strategy by conducting facility-wide testing of their Noel team members, said Dr. Randall Williams, Director of Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. This approach will help protect the health of the Tyson team members and also the community at large.

Our priority and focus have been the protection of our team members and their communities. That starts with large-scale testing, but our holistic approach goes much further, said Tom Brower, Senior Vice President of Health and Safety for Tyson Foods. We believe its imperative that we share our experience addressing this pandemic because safety is not a point of competitive advantage. For example, we continue to explore additional enhancements in Personal Protective Equipment, airflow enhancements in our facilities, and improving healthcare options for our team members in the communities where we do business.

Protective measures put in place at Tyson production facilities include symptom screenings for all team members before every shift, providing mandatory protective face masks to all team members, as well as a range of social distancing measures, including physical barriers between workstations and in breakrooms. Tyson has also designated more than 500 team members as social distance monitors in all its facilities and is working with team members to provide training and education, in several languages on how best to follow CDC guidelines both at work and home.

Our team members do essential work, and their health and safety come first, said Nathan McKay, Complex Manager for Tyson in Noel. It is our job to protect our team members, and by disclosing our results we not only take the necessary precautions for our facility, but also provide the wider Noel community with the information it needs to stop the spread of the virus.

Deciding When to Defer Oncology Treatment – OncLive

Are They Sick?

Every physician-in-training hears this question after presenting a patient to an attending physician who is trying to build a clinical impression.

An unsure intern might need to think back: Were the bedsheets drawn over the patients head? Was their forehead speckled with perspiration? Did they just not look right?

This simple question distills the complexity of medicine into 2 categories: sick or not sick. Its a vital tool for developing the critical skill of looking at a patient and quickly deciding whether he or she requires immediate attention or can wait for a timely follow-up. With time, determining whether a patient is sick or not sick gets easier and, for most, eventually becomes a reflex rather than a consciously applied skill.

Oncologists are challenged to make a different determination when a new patient presents with advanced cancer. We know the patient is sick. The question becomes whether they are too sick. In the following fictional case, a 55-year-old woman presents to the emergency room with bilateral pleural effusions, extensive peritoneal carcinomatosis, and bilateral hydroureteronephrosis with an elevated creatinine. The results of an omental biopsy show high-grade serous cancer of mullerian origin. Diagnostic and therapeutic thoracenteses confirm malignant pleural effusions.

Despite regular drainage of her pleural fluid, she remains oxygen dependent. She is unable to walk even short distances with assistance and spends the majority of the day in bed. Prior to her hospitalization, she was in good health and had no significant medical problems. She strongly prefers disease-directed treatment.

The situation in which an underlying advanced malignancy limits a patients ability to receive primary treatment is difficult for both the patient and the provider. General guidelines for avoiding chemotherapy in patients with poor ECOG performance status and in patients who have exhausted treatment options fail to fully capture the complexity and weight of this decision, particularly for newly diagnosed patients.1,2 Our hope for some clinical improvement, coupled with an underlying desire to provide patients with treatment, pushes providers to be biased toward interventions.

This desire can ultimately be harmful if a lack of understanding into the disease trajectory leads oncologists to recommend treatments that make the patient sicker without any meaningful benefit. All these factors, as well as the finality of the decision to defer treatment, can contribute to provider anguish. While we can usually find solace in the severity of the patients presentation and our knowledge of how toxic disease-directed treatments can be, this decision is incredibly difficult.

As oncologists, we spend the majority of our time and energy fighting or conquering cancer. By focusing on chemotherapeutic or surgical interventions, we provide patients and families with hope and feel that we are having a positive impact on the disease trajectory. We sometimes feel helpless when we cant offer something to our patients that will allow them to live longer or reverse their symptoms.

However, even when we cant offer treatment, we still have something to offer. We can provide honest assessments of how much benefit patients will derive from treatment in the face of poor performance status or overwhelming disease burden. We can shift the conversation to focus on doing all we can to mitigate the symptoms and maximize the quality of valuable time spent with family and loved ones. Patients and families are often as appreciative of this thoughtful, holistic approach, despite the disappointment shared by everyone that the patient is too sick for disease-directed therapy.

It can be helpful to remind ourselves that many patients value quality of life over quantity. In a recentsurvey, 86.7% of patients with serious illnesses including cancer chose a hypothetical scenario of living 4 years and dying at home over living 5 years and dying in the intensive care unit.3 As encouraging as these thought experiments can be, the desire to maintain hope of prolonging life is strongand has been cited by oncologists as a main reason for administering chemotherapy near the end of life.4

As oncology fellows in training, our steep clinical learning curve promotes immense personal and professional growth. Chemotherapy orders that used to take hours now take a fraction of that time. Absorbing the daunting body of literature needed to guide clinical decisions becomes more digestible. Deciding that a patient with an advanced malignancy is too sick for primary treatment may never get easier with time and experience.

Determining if a patient is sick or not sick eventually becomes a reflex, but separating sick from too sick remains challenging. Sometimes, telling a patient they will die of an untreated malignancy can alleviate suffering by transitioning goals of care. Other times, the conversation is accompanied with immense self-doubt and sadness. In our oncology training we reflect on a variety of intense emotions in a regular narrative-medicine didactic, but we rarely receive focused training on processing death and dying as a provider.

Some physicians find solace in handwriting condolence letters. The process of sitting down to reflect on the life of a person youve cared forto honor their family and show the patient meant something to youcan help close even the saddest chapters with purpose.

Oncologists are charged with navigating the gray space between beneficence and nonmaleficence in patients with advanced, untreated malignancy. Conceptualizing the act of navigating this often-uncertain territory as a gift might be key to finding peace in making the weighty decision of deferring treatment in patients with newly diagnosed advanced cancer.

Inherent in the black-and-white sick versus not sick determination is a forced dichotomization that helps providers appropriately distribute attention and resources to take the best care of patients. Sick versus too sick could not be more of a personal decision and really highlights the intensity of the relationship between patients and their oncologists. As oncology fellows in training, we are learning to take pride in the art of gray.

BC-VIRUS OUTBREAK-GLOBAL

US states reimpose virus controls; India tops 500,000 cases

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas and Florida have clamped down on bars in Americas biggest retreat yet as the nations daily number of confirmed coronavirus cases rose to an all-time high of 45,300. In Florida, Miami-Dade County announced beaches would be closed for the Fourth of July weekend. Texas Governor Greg Abbott closed bars and scaled back restaurant capacity as the second-largest state sets records for cases and hospitalizations. Its a reversal for a Republican governor who had pursued one of the nations most aggressive reopening efforts. In Asia, the number of confirmed cases in India topped 500,000, while China and South Korea battled smaller outbreaks in their capitals.

BC-VIRUS OUTBREAK-THE LATEST

The Latest: Flight departs UK to deliver virus aid to Africa

Britains Royal Air Force says the first in a series of flights taking coronavirus aid to Africa has departed for Ghana with materials for a field hospital with capacity for nearly 100 people. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in a statement that the U.K. is the first NATO ally to come forward with an aid flight after NATO agreed to support the United Nations appeal for airlift assistance. The pandemic and travel restrictions have severely affected flights to the African continent and the delivery of crucial cargo including medical supplies. The U.K. says up to five flights are needed to deliver the field hospital to Accra. Ghana has more than 15,000 confirmed virus cases.

RACIAL INJUSTICE-TRUMP-MONUMENTS

Trump signs strong executive order to protect monuments

WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald has signed an executive order to protect monuments, memorials and statues. Trump had promised the order earlier this week after police thwarted an attempt by protesters to pull down a statue of Andrew Jackson in a park across from the White House. The order calls on the attorney general to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law any person or group that destroys or vandalizes a monument, memorial or statue. Federal law calls for punishment of up to 10 years in prison. Earlier Friday, Trump called for the arrest of protesters involved in the attempt to pull down the statue of Jackson.

VIRUS OUTBREAK-IMMIGRATION DETENTION

Judge: US must free migrant children from family detention

HOUSTON (AP) A federal judge has ordered the release of children held with their parents in U.S. immigration jails and denounced the Trump administrations prolonged detention of families during the coronavirus pandemic. U.S. District Judge Dolly Gees order Friday applies to children at three family detention centers in Texas and Pennsylvania operated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Some have been detained since last year. Citing the recent spread of the virus in two of the three facilities, Gee set a deadline of July 17 for children to either be released with their parents or sent to family sponsors.

AP-US-GEORGE-FLOYD-MINNEAPOLIS-POLICE

Plan advances to allow dismantling Minneapolis Police Dept.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Minneapolis City Council has unanimously advanced a plan that could one day do away with the citys police department, following unrest over the killing of George Floyd. The council voted Friday in favor of amending the city charter to replace the current department with a Department of Community Safety and Violence Prevention that would prioritize a holistic and public-health oriented approach. Several obstacles remain for the proposal to make it onto the November ballot. Critics of the plan, including Mayor Jacob Frey and the officers union, say its short on specifics for what would replace the police department.

Arizona attorney general warns church where Trump had rally

PHOENIX (AP) Arizonas chief attorney has issued a cease-and-desist letter to a company touted by a church where President Donald Trump held a rally and where leaders say they use an air filtration system that neutralizes the coronavirus. Attorney General Mark Brnovich also sent a warning letter to Dream City Church, which posted a widely circulated video claiming the technology by Clean Air EXP kills 99 percent of COVID within 10 minutes. Brnovich said the company tested a virus that causes the common cold, not the coronavirus. Both the church and company have walked back the claims.

TRUMP RALLY-REPORTER

Reporter at Trumps Tulsa rally tests positive for COVID-19

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A journalist who covered President Donald Trumps rally in Tulsa on Saturday says hes tested positive for COVID-19. Oklahoma Watch reporter Paul Monies said on Twitter he was notified Friday of his positive test result. Monies said he was inside the BOK Center in Tulsa for about six hours on Saturday during Trumps rally. Monies said he was wearing a mask and mostly following social distancing guidelines. Monies was never near Trump and spent most of the time around other journalists. He said an epidemiologist who contacted him said its difficult to determine exactly when he contracted the virus.

RACIAL INJUSTICE-CONFEDERATE FLAG-MISSISSIPPI

Confederate symbol on Mississippi flag sparks strong debate

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Emotions are running high as Mississippi legislators consider the future of the last state flag in the U.S. that includes the Confederate battle emblem. Leaders say a vote at the state Capitol could happen as soon as Saturday. Pressure to change the flag has increased rapidly the past three weeks amid nationwide protests against racial injustice. Legislators could adopt a new Mississippi flag without the Confederate emblem. Or, they could kick the volatile issue to a statewide election, giving voters choices that might or might not include the current banner. Mississippi has used the same flag for more than 125 years.

AP-US-ELECTION-2020-HEALTH-CARE

Democrats renew health care attacks on GOP as virus builds

WASHINGTON (AP) Democrats are intensifying their attacks on President Donald Trump and his Republican allies over health care. Theyre hoping that an issue that helped lift the party during the midterms will prove even more resonant as the White House seeks to repeal the Affordable Care Act during a public health crisis. Spikes in coronavirus cases nationwide and the Trump administrations filing this week supporting a GOP-led effort to dismantle the Obama-era law in the courts have offered Democrats an opportunity to return the issue to the spotlight. Republican attempts to dismantle the law is now an issue the party believes is even more crucial as the coronavirus ravages the nation.

TRUMP-RUSSIA PROBE-STONE

Judge delays Roger Stones prison surrender for 2 weeks

WASHINGTON (AP) A federal judge is giving Trump ally Roger Stone an additional two weeks before he must report to serve his federal prison sentence. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jacksons ruling on Friday comes days after Stone asked the court to allow him to put off serving his more than 3-year sentence until September, citing coronavirus concerns. The judge says Stone will be on home confinement before beginning his prison sentence, in part because of the strong medical recommendation submitted by his defense lawyers. He would need to surrender at FCI Jesup, a federal prison in Georgia, on July 14.

Rob Gronkowski returns: Ranking the 10 best NFL comebacks out of retirement in history – CBS Sports

Posted: at 4:47 pm

High expectations await Rob Gronkowski as the former All-Pro tight end came out of retirement after one year to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- and reunite with good friend Tom Brady. Gronkowski already has his Hall of Fame resume sealed, but he can add to his legacy as one of the best tight ends to ever play the game with a strong finish in Tampa.

Gronkowski isn't the first high-profile NFL player to be lured out of retirement, and he likely won't be the last. Former NFL greats who returned to the game after officially retiring have typically performed at a high level, even in their mid-to-late 30s. Gronkowski is just 31 years old and still in his prime, so a good season or two may be ahead if he can stay healthy.

These 10 NFL greats didn't need to return to football, but each had reasons to return and played at a high level in their second NFL life. Here are the 10 best NFL returns by players who had retired from the league:

White shockingly returned to the NFL after retiring as a First Team All-Pro and finishing with 16 sacks with the Green Bay Packers in 1998 -- at 36 years old. The Carolina Panthers were looking to bolster their pass rush and lured White out of retirement in 2000, signing him to a five-year deal.

White finished with a career-low 5.5 sacks, even though he started all 16 games at 38 years old. Not bad considering he signed in late July, when Panthers training camp was set to begin. He actually finished second on the team in sacks.

White retired for good after the season as the NFL's all-time sacks leader with 198 (which Bruce Smith surpassed in 2003).

Shocking the NFL by retiring in his prime, Williams had tested positive for marijuana for a second time and was facing a four-game suspension. Using the time to "find himself," Williams studied Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of holistic medicine, for a year before deciding to return.

Williams started just three games in his first season back in 2005 with the Dolphins, rushing for 743 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games. He failed a drug test for a fourth time, and was suspended for the entire 2006 season -- playing for the CFL's Toronto Argonauts to stay in football shape.

Williams rushed for 1,121 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2009 at the age of 32 (despite only starting seven games). After a 2007 season which he had to apply for reinstatement to the league, Williams didn't miss a game in the last four years of his career.

He rushed for 3,655 yards and 25 touchdowns in the six seasons following his retirement. Williams wasn't the same player that took over the league in his first five seasons.

Harrison initially retired with the Pittsburgh Steelers at 36 years old in 2014, but wasn't away from the NFL for long. Thanks to injuries piling up on the Steelers defense, Harrison was lured out of retirement weeks later. He started just four games, but finished with 5.5 sacks and 14 quarterback hits in 11 games.

Harrison never made a Pro Bowl in the four years after his return, even though he was the emotional leader on the Steelers defense. He recorded 15.5 sacks and 38 quarterback hits with two interceptions in a part-time role with Pittsburgh the first three seasons back, all in his late 30s.

The Steelers played Harrison just 29 snaps in the first 12 games of the 2017 season, leading to his release in December of that year. The 39-year-old Harrison signed a contract with the Steelers arch-rival, the New England Patriots, days later and had two sacks in his first game with the team, a Week 17 win over the New York Jets.

Harrison started Super Bowl LII and played 91% of the snaps, finishing with two quarterback hits against the Philadelphia Eagles. He retired after the 2017 season, recording 17.5 sacks and 42 quarterback hits since returning at 36 years old.

Hard to believe Sanders played at a high level at 37 years old, missing three seasons after retiring from the NFL in 2000. Sanders still had an itch to play and something to prove. Sanders actually was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Chargers in 2002 when Washington released him from the reserve/retired list, but it was too late for him to be activated so he never played a game for the franchise.

Ray Lewis helped lure Sanders out of retirement in 2004 when he signed with the Baltimore Ravens, playing the slot after a decade as one of the best outside cornerbacks in the game. Sanders played in just nine games his first season back, but finished with three interceptions and had five passes defensed. He also returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown in Week 7 against the Buffalo Bills, tying Ken Houston and Aeneas Williams for second place in interception returns for touchdowns in league history.

Sanders played two years in Baltimore, finishing with five interceptions and 10 passes defensed in 25 games, retiring for good at 38. There aren't many cornerbacks who played well in their late 30s, but Sanders was one of them.

Hard to make a top 10 list without mentioning Cunningham's massive return to the NFL. After the Philadelphia Eagles released Cunningham and the St. Louis Rams failed to sign him, Cunningham walked away from the game at 33.

Cunningham, who was a studio analyst for TNT and ran a granite business, signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 1997 as Dennis Green needed a backup quarterback. The former Bert Bell award winner had plenty of game left in him. Cunningham earned the starting job in Week 15 of the 1997 season and led the Vikings to a thrilling 23-22 overtime win over the New York Giants in the NFC Wild Card round, conducting two late scoring drives in the win.

The 1998 season was Cunningham's best in the NFL, as he threw for 3,704 yards and 34 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions to lead the Vikings to a 15-1 record. Cunningham threw four touchdown passes in four separate games and led the NFL with a 106.0 passer rating, earning First Team All-Pro honors at the age of 35. He threw for 505 yards and five touchdowns in two playoff games, but the Vikings were shocked in overtime by the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship Game, thanks to a missed 38-yard field goal by Gary Anderson -- who hadn't missed a kick all year.

Cunningham never recaptured that 1998 magic and lost his starting job in 1999, but played three more years as a backup quarterback. He signed a one-day contract to retire with the Eagles in 2002. Cunningham threw for 7,102 yards and 57 touchdowns to 29 interceptions following his return.

Ed "Too Tall" Jones retired from the NFL at 28 after the 1978 season to pursue a boxing career. He actually went unbeaten in his six fights, but wasn't considered a true heavyweight contender. Jones returned to the Dallas Cowboys in 1980 with his best years ahead of him.

Boxing made Jones a better football player, as the Cowboys legend made three Pro Bowls and was a First Team All-Pro selection once in the 10 seasons after his return. Sacks weren't an official stat until 1982, but Jones recorded 57.5 of them in the eight seasons they were official -- all after the age of 31. Jones missed just one game since returning to football and finished with 13 sacks in 1985 and 10 sacks in 1987 (at the age of 36).

Somehow Jones isn't in the Cowboys "Ring of Honor" nor the Hall of Fame. He should be in both.

Nagurski took five seasons off before returning to the game in 1943, at the age of 35. The Bears were short of football players due to World War II, so Nagurski decided to come back as a tackle (he played fullback in his first eight seasons with Chicago).

The Bears were trailing in a must-win game late in the season against the Chicago Cardinals, so they moved Nagurski back to fullback. Nagurski scored a touchdown to put the Bears within one score in the fourth quarter, as Chicago scored 21 unanswered points in the final quarter to send the Bears to the NFL Championship Game.

Nagurski scored on a 3-yard run to give Chicago the lead for good in the title game, finishing with 11 carries for 34 yards and a score in a 41-21 victory. Nagurski went out on top after being away from the game for half a decade, one of the best returns in league history.

Favre actually retired twice, in 2008 with the Green Bay Packers and in 2009 with the New York Jets -- two of the weirdest sagas in NFL history.

His decision to retire the first time came after Favre made a Pro Bowl at the age of 38 and he led the Green Bay Packers to the NFC Championship Game in that same season (2007). Shortly after announcing his retirement, Favre decided to return that summer.

The Packers moved on from Favre and traded him to the New York Jets, where he led the league with 22 interceptions, but made the Pro Bowl. Favre completed 65.7% of his passes and threw for 3,472 yards and 22 touchdowns as the Jets collapsed from an 8-3 start to finish 9-7 and miss the playoffs. Favre played with a torn biceps tendon in his right shoulder the final month of that season.

Shortly after the Jets' season ended, Favre retired again, only to come back and quarterback the Minnesota Vikings in August of 2009. He had arguably the best season of his career at age 40, completing 68.4% of his passes while throwing for 4,202 yards and 33 touchdowns to just seven interceptions (107.2 passer rating).

The Vikings reached the NFC Championship Game as Favre took the eventual Super Bowl championNew Orleans Saintsto overtime. Favre played one more season in Minnesota before retiring for good at age 41. He started 321 straight games at quarterback (regular season and postseason) and did not miss a game until his final season.

Favre played his best football into his 40s with a shortened offseason, adding to his legendary career.

Whether Riggins actually retired from the NFL is up for debate, but the Washington Redskins actually did place him on the retired list in 1980. Riggins wanted to renegotiate his $300,000-per-year deal with the Redskins, but the team refused. Riggins left camp that season and the team placed him on the camp-retired list, preventing him from going to another organization.

New Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs wanted Riggins back and gave him a peace offering. Riggins asked for a no-trade clause in his contract, and the Redskins obliged.

Riggins returned at 32 years old, and he was dominant into his mid 30s. Riggins rushed for 4,530 yards and 62 touchdowns in five seasons, having two 1,000-yard seasons and leading the league in touchdowns twice (including a staggering 24 in 1983 at the age of 34). His finest performance came in Super Bowl XVII, rushing 38 times for 166 yards and a touchdown -- a 43-yard run on fourth-and-1 that gave the Redskins the lead for good and became one of the most iconic plays in NFL history.

Those final five years made Riggins a Hall of Famer, capped with a Super Bowl MVP award and a single-season touchdown record that stood for 12 years.

Graham retired from the NFL after the 1954 season, after the Cleveland Browns crushed the Detroit Lions 56-10 in the NFL Championship Game. Head coach Paul Brown begged Graham to return after his replacement quarterbacks struggled in the 1955 preseason.

Graham returned and had one of his finest seasons at 33 years old, leading the league in completion percentage (53.1), yards per attempt (9.3) and passer rating (94.0), throwing for 1,721 yards and 15 touchdowns as the Browns returned to the NFL Championship Game. He also was the UPI MVP and a First Team All-Pro.

Graham threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two touchdowns as the Browns crushed the Los Angeles Rams 38-14 in the title game. He walked off the field with his seventh pro football championship in his 10 seasons (three in NFL, four in All-American Football Conference) -- making a championship game in all 10 seasons he played professional football.

Not only did Graham leave a champion, but he had the best post-retirement comeback of all time.

Insights & Outcomes: Exosomes, a drug-coated balloon, and new info on AMOC – Yale News

Posted: at 4:47 pm

This month, Insights & Outcomes gets into the flow of Yale research from the movement of RNA within the human body to the circulation of water in the Atlantic Ocean.

As always, you can find more science and medicine research news on theScience & TechnologyandHealth & Medicinepages on YaleNews.

Scientists have emphasized that engineering artificial nanoparticles is the best way to deliver potential therapeutic genetic information into cells. However, in a recently published essay, Yale immunologistDr. Philip Askenaseargues that a better therapeutic vehicle has existedsince the dawn of evolution. Exosomes are natural, tiny lipid sacs that act like couriers, ferrying tiny sequences of RNA called microRNA to and from cells throughout the body. They are secreted by all cells in all animals. Once they enter the recipient cell, they are able to alter the behavior of genes that carry out lifes functions. Exosomes have many advantages over artificial nanoparticles as potential therapeutics, Askenase said. They are naturally able to pass through the blood-brain barrier, are not targeted by the immune system, and are extremely hardy, with a long evolutionary heritage. Exosomes have great value in developing targeted gene therapies to treat a host of diseases, Askenase said. The essay appears June 18 in the journal Nature Outlook.

Climate scientists are drawing ever closer to understanding the effects of a warming climate on the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) the Atlantic Oceans main water circulation system. AMOC operates like a conveyor belt, bringing warm water to the North Atlantic via an upper limb and sending colder water south via a deeper limb. Over the past 15 years, there have been signs that AMOC is slowing down, and an area of cooler, non-warming water has developed in the North Atlantic. A new study suggests that this hole of non-warming water may be linked to climate change and a slowing AMOC. We have developed a new method to isolate the climatic impacts of the weakening AMOC, said Yale professor of geology and geophysicsAlexey Fedorov, co-author of the new study. We compare our global warming simulations of a constant AMOC with simulations that have a declining AMOC. Fedorov said when there is an active AMOC system in place, the non-warming hole in the North Atlantic disappears. The first author of the study is former Yale postdoctoral associateWei Liu, who is now at the University of California-Riverside. The study appears in Science Advances.

The brain is a particularly difficult and complex organ to study, but it has become more accessible thanks to a new technique developed by Yale neuroscientists. Researchers often use recombinant viruses to replace or alter genes in animals in order to study the genes effects on the development of diseases. However, it is quite expensive, and it often takes years to develop strains of genetically modified animals. The introduction of recombinant viruses into the brains of animals has also proven to be difficult and inefficient, making it unsuitable to study early genetic origins of autism, epilepsy, and schizophrenia, for instance. A Yale team led byAli Hamodi, a postdoctoral fellow in neuroscience, developed a new method that eliminates these obstacles. When injected into a newborn rodents brain blood vessel known as the transverse sinus, the recombinant virus immediately allows researchers to study the effects of genes throughout the entire brain. It enables you to create genetically modified animals, without the time, effort, and cost spent breeding genetically modified animals, Hamodi said. The study appears in the journal eLife.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded a $2.5 million, five-year grant to expand Yales Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Programs. The grant will allow Yale School of Medicine to increase the number of board-eligible Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry fellows who graduate from Yales addiction-training programs each year, expand relationships with community treatment facilities, and further develop and recruit faculty clinician educators. There are still shortages of physicians trained to treat addictive disorders, saidDr. Ismene Petrakis, professor of psychiatry at Yale and chief of psychiatry at the VA Connecticut Healthcare system. Those shortages particularly affect underserved populations. This grant will allow us to increase the number of trainees, prioritize placements in community programs, and encourage physicians to pursue careers in addiction treatment within community settings.Dr. Jeanette Tetrault, associate professor of medicine (generalmedicine) and associate director for training and education for the Program in Addiction Medicine, directs the Addiction Medicine Fellowship. With resources from HRSA, we can markedly expand our reach, she said. Additionally, by training fellows in community settings, we will prepare fellows to work where treatment is needed most. The grant builds on collaborative efforts of Yale Medicine and Yale Psychiatry to treat addiction holistically, working closely with community partners such as Connecticut Mental Health Center, the APT Foundation, and federally qualified health centers. Special emphasis will be placed on training in telehealth services.

Although health care reform in China has pumped additional money into that countrys primary health care system and led to improvements in health care policies, medical researchers say wide gaps in the quality of primary health care still exist. YalesDr. Harlan Krumholz, the Harold H. Hines Jr. Professor of Medicine (cardiology) and Public Health, and director of the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation, is co-lead author of a new review that offers sweeping recommendations to raise the quality of primary health care in China. Among the recommendations are better training and education of medical workers, integration of clinical care and public health services, the establishment of performance standards and accountability, and more active use of digital platforms for quality control and training. The article appears in The Lancet.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD), the progressive narrowing of blood vessels away from the heart or brain that reduces blood flow to the limbs, affects more than 8.5 million Americans. The femoropopliteal artery, located in the leg, is a common site for PAD and doctors currently have several endovascular options for treatment. A new, Yale-led review of those treatment options suggests that one is most preferable: a drug-coated balloon that is inserted in the leg, advanced to the narrowed area, and inflated. The authors, led by associate professor of medicine (cardiology)Dr. Carlos Mana-Hurtado, noted the safety profile, ease of use, and clinical efficacy of the drug-coated balloon procedure. The study appears in Expert Review of Medical Devices.

The holistic guide to pregnancy stress and anxiety – Happiful Magazine

Posted: at 4:47 pm

Whether it's your first time expecting or you've had previous pregnancies, being pregnant can be a stressful, often anxiety-filled time. With so much pressure and expectation that this will be one of the happiest, most exciting times of your life, it can seem even more worrying if you aren't feeling that 'pregnancy glow'.

While we all feel anxious from time to time, anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems experienced in the UK. When it comes to stress, an overwhelming 74% of us have felt overwhelmed or unable to cope during the past year, according to the Mental Health Foundation. And according to a separate 2018 study, one in four pregnant women will experience a mental health problem.

If you're worried stress and anxiety may be affecting your ability to relax, plan, and prepare for your upcoming birth, it's important to take steps now to help you feel more prepared and ready for what is to come.

To find out more about the different types of help and support available, check out our complete guide to pregnancy anxiety. If you're looking for a more holistic approach, try these suggestions to help you feel calmer and more prepared.

When you hear the word mindfulness, what do you think of? Generally speaking, mindfulness refers to our aim to reconnect with ourselves to help reduce stress, become more attuned with our emotions, and to feel more aware, connected, and present (mentally and physically) in the here and now.

When we are stressed or anxious, it can be easy to let our thoughts run away from us. How often have you found yourself going into autopilot whilst doing the dishes, folding the laundry, or any number of different tasks? Mindfulness can help you to feel more grounded and attuned with how you are feeling.

Mindful meditation is one of the most common techniques used. This involves focusing on what you can see, hear, smell, and feel, whilst trying to clear your mind. This can be a struggle for many at first, but with practice, it can have a significant, positive effect.

Mindfulness-based therapies, such as MBSR (mindfulness-based stress reduction) and MBCT (mindfulness-based cognitive therapy) can also be effective ways of learning to recognise and stop negative reactions, see situations more clearly and feel more balanced.

Practising mindfulness can not only help to reduce feelings of anxiety, but can increase your quality of sleep and help decrease negative feelings such as tension and anger. If youre new to mindfulness, taking just 10 minutes each day can help you to calm your mind and feel more in control.

If youre unsure of where to start, mindfulness-based apps can be a great starting point, or try our intro on how to declutter your mind.

If mindful meditation doesnt appeal, mindful colouring could be a good alternative. As midwife, teacher, and author of Preparing for Birth: colouring your pregnancy journey, Bridget Sheeran explains, mindful colouring can help expectant mothers to reduce feelings of anxiety, and increase their sense of calm and focus.

When I was younger I was sceptical about mindfulness because as a nurse, there was then, some ridiculing attitude to anything that seemed alternative. Today, there is a high expectation placed on what we should be doing, and how we should be, in order to get somewhere or some attainment.

It is for good reason that most people are turning to exercise and/or some form of relaxation or mindful awareness practices to give themselves a way of turning off for the sake of their health. Colouring in images in a book, as a mindfulness practice, has been shown to promote mental wellbeing.

Psychologists say that it can put people in a state of flow and it really feels good for people. The adult colouring in, with its smaller pencil movements within the small areas of an image, brings focus; attention and some solace, from the activity itself. In turn, claims of feeling calm or relaxed are reported as reducing stress levels in the day.

It helps pregnant women to find a moment, and indirectly discover for themselves, through the images, through the activity itself a change in themselves and a time to let themselves think of nothing in particular. A pregnancy related colouring book will link the activity and bring the mindfulness into some areas of pregnancy and birth. Without judgement, with curiosity, and in a fun way.

Associations with mindfulness and how to bring calm without increasing muscular tension, is a valuable practice for birth helping birth to work for you. This activity is a good way to also give you space for you to formulate what questions you need to ask. Questions based on what you want help with achieving or understanding, so that practical matters for mental and physical considerations can be thought through in preparation for birth and afterwards.

Holistic therapy, also commonly referred to as complementary or alternative medicine, simply refers to the treatment of the whole person (body, mind, emotions, and spirit), rather than individual symptoms. Designed to help you regain balance, holistic therapies can be a complimentary way of improving your overall sense of wellbeing.

Used alongside, rather than instead of conventional medicine, taking a holistic approach can help you to identify stress or anxiety triggers, learn new relaxation techniques, and alleviate a wide range of physical or emotional symptoms. Before beginning a new type of complementary therapy, you should check with your healthcare provider that it is safe for you to do so, as well as letting your holistic therapist know that you are pregnant. This allows them to tailor any treatments to ensure both you and your baby remain safe and well.

As explained by the NHS, there is some evidence to support the use of specific complementary therapies, particularly massage and aromatherapy for anxiety, as well as acupressure for morning sickness.

Common types of holistic therapy many women try during pregnancy can include:

Using essential oils, aromatherapy can help assist your bodys natural abilities to heal, rest, and recover. Typically used through smell and skin absorption, different essential oils (typically made from plants and flowers) have different properties. When used on your skin, these can help relieve pain or inflammation.

If youre looking to try essential oils at home, rollerball essential oils applied to your wrists and temple can be soothing and relaxing - and can even help decrease tension headaches and morning sickness for some women. Adding a few drops of essential oils to your bath can also allow you to absorb the oils through your skin, whilst breathing in the vapour from the steam of your bath.

Some NHS trusts do allow complementary therapies such as aromatherapy during labour. Its best to check with your individual midwife or hospital to see what is available or allowed in your area.

Combining massage therapy with aromatherapy, many find aromatherapy massages can be incredibly relaxing, may reduce stress, lift mood, and decrease nervous tension. Physically, it can ease muscle tension and boost your circulation.

As massage therapist Vicky Collinson explains, pregnancy massage can offer natural pain relief for mums-to-be.

Massage is beneficial to you and your baby, both emotionally and physically. Emotionally, it may help with relaxation and relief from the stresses that pregnancy can bring. Physically, it helps alleviate the aches and pains that are associated with pregnancy. Endorphins are released during massage and benefit both you and your baby.

While regular massage may help reduce anxiety, aches, and pains that come along with pregnancy, it will also help you with body awareness. Understanding your body better can increase your ability to relax during the early stages of labour, so it's great practice for the big day!

Encouraging healing whilst relieving stress and tension, reflexology involves applying pressure to and massaging specific areas of the feet, hands, and hears. These areas (reflexes) are thought to be linked to other areas of your body through your nervous system. Through stimulating these reflexes, a reflexologist can stimulate the energy flow around your body to target areas of tension.

Helping to reduce pain and stress, improve circulation, and enhance wellbeing, reflexology may help with common ailments and discomforts during second and third pregnancy trimesters.

Its important to continue gentle exercise during and after pregnancy. No matter what your fitness level, yoga can be a great, gentle way to keep active whilst relaxing, learning breathing techniques, and even practising birthing poses.

If youre unsure where to start, try this free NHS recommended pregnancy yoga video to get you started, or find our more about what to expect from a pregnancy yoga class.

Recommended particularly for morning sickness, many people also find acupressure can help with pain and stress relief, as well as to reduce labour pains and encourage natural childbirth. Commonly referred to as acupuncture without needles, acupressure follows the same holistic principles to help address imbalances and unblock energy pathways.

If you're worried about your anxiety or stress levels, it's important to speak up, ask for help, and look after your mental health. The sooner you reach out, the more likely you are to turn those feelings of stress and anxiety back into joy and excitement.

The Mental Health Foundation estimates half (50%) of perinatal mental health problems ho untreated or undetected. This can have a significant impact on you and your family during a time when you most need help.

There are many different things that can affect your mental health whilst pregnant or after giving birth. From hormonal changes to insomnia, relationship or family issues to financial worries - we're all affected differently by the big issues that can crop up. It's important to keep an eye out for any symptoms that you may be struggling, and seek help if you have any concerns.
