‘I don’t want to introduce my friends to my partner’ – Times of India

Query: I had a very colourful past but now I have found the girl I want to marry and settle down with. She is a simple girl, unlike the ones I have dated in the past. I want to protect her from my past and so I have stopped interacting with my old friends. I hate it when they bring up anecdotes from my past and I dont want to hurt the girl. Am I doing the right thing?Response by Dr Rachna K Singh: Hi, thank you for writing to me.Firstly, a huge congratulations to you for finding the right partner. Having a good partner surely makes our life better in multiple ways and it is definitely something we all dream of.However, it is important to realise that everybody has a past and it is completely normal to have certain dark aspects attached to our past. What we need to understand here is that, our past is a part of us and no matter good or bad, it plays a crucial role in shaping us. While your apprehensions about disclosing your past are completely understandable, sharing it may have both positive and negative effects.

While the negative clearly is the chance of your partner getting upset or angry with you, threatening the relationship at present, I feel you can try and make your partner understand, with logic, love and compassion.
