The health care facility is applying for a $17 million loan from USDA Rural Development and a $3 million grant from the Bank of North Dakota to finance the construction and remodeling project, said Pete Antonson, Northwood Deaconess Health Center CEO. Antonson hopes to secure the loan by mid-summer and break ground on the project in early fall.

Northwood Deaconess Health Center, located about 40 miles southwest of Grand Forks, includes a hospital, health clinic, nursing home, assisted living facilities and an ambulance service.

We will demolish some of it and we will use some of it. Some spaces will be significantly renovated and maintained and some of it will be pretty much demolished, he said.

EAPC Architects Engineers in Grand Forks is designing the NDHC project, which the health care facilitys board, administrators and a survey of the Northwood community determined was needed for the center that serves southwest Grand Forks County, Antonson said.

The health care centers improvement project will include demolishing the hospitals existing 12 patient rooms and rebuilding 10 private larger rooms, he said. The small patient rooms the hospital has now were built in 1971, when patient care was different and didnt require as much space as it does now. Meanwhile, the rooms bathroom doors are narrow and dont meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, Antonson said.

Because the hospital was built 50 years ago, it was designed for in-patient care, instead of out-patient procedures that are common today, so the remodeling project also will include construction of rooms for out-patient procedures.

A physical therapy department addition also is part of the remodeling plans. The NDHC physical therapy departments work with pediatric patients has created a niche for the hospital, and children come from as far as 100 miles for physical and occupational therapy and speech services, Antonson said.

During the remodeling project, the entrance to the hospital and clinic, in two different locations, will be moved to a single location on the front, along Park Street, which runs by the hospital.

Reconfiguring the hospital and clinic will make it much more beneficial to patients and staff alike, he said, noting that the coronavirus pandemic highlighted its current inefficiencies.

Were trying to develop a patient-friendly workflow, and for staff, one more conducive to providing health care of today, Antonson said.

Besides the hospital, the remodeling project also will include building a new nursing home which will have 32 beds, 10 fewer than it has now. The existing nursing home was built when long-term care facilities were designed like medical facilities. That is no longer the case today, he said.

The new nursing home will contain two pods," which will be built around a dining and a commons area for activities, rather than rooms on each side of long corridors.

The pod setup makes it easier for residents to participate in activities, Antonson said.
