Ageing is a normal and natural process, but there is nothing wrong with wanting your skin to look its very best.

We all know that to make sure our skin is in the best condition possible, a balanced diet, exercise regime and healthy sleeping pattern is key.

There are also a number of ingredients we know are very generous to the skin, from hyaluronic acid to Vitamin C, glycolic acid to retinol.

But if youre looking to give your skin a much needed boost as we head into the colder months, there are four other ingredients which will keep skin soft and smooth and give it a youthful glow.

Vitamin E can be found not only in skincare but your diet too. According to top pharmacist Laura Dowling, the vitamin helps to fight free radicals in the body, which are responsible for skin problems such as blemishes, wrinkles and sagging skin. You should use a Vitamin E-based cleanser on the skin, and also make sure that you get enough of the good stuff in your diet. Laura says: You can find it in natural plant-based oils such as sunflower seeds, sunflower oil, vegetable oil, almonds, peanuts and red bell peppers.

Zinc is key as it helps to soothe the skin. The ingredient is typically found in a lot of babycare products thanks to its gentle and calming properties but can also help with anti-aging. The mineral assists antioxidants by stopping new free radicals from damaging the skin, which, simply put, means it helps prevent the formation of wrinkles. You can also take a zinc supplement or eat foods high in zinc because it boosts overall health and wellbeing too, Laura says.

Urea is a very important ingredient, particularly if you suffer from dry skin. Laura says it has a natural moisturising factor which is key in hydrating the skin, so urea-based skincare products will make sure everything is soft and supple. The ingredient is also able to sink in to the deeper layers of skin, which stimulates the production of collagen - the ingredient responsible for plumper, younger-looking skin.

Like zinc, which is mentioned above, panthenol is a very soothing ingredient which is kind to skin and Laura says using panthenol is good as it contains Vitamin B5 which improve the skins softness and elasticity. As dry and dehydrated skin can often account for a much older and dull appearance, panthenols moisturising properties helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and creates a brighter, more radiant and smoother complexion.
