In our series My Monday Morning, self-motivated people tell WSJ. how they start off the week.

Taraji P. Henson hasnt worked as an actor in almost a year. Best known for portraying Cookie Lyon on Empirefor which shes won a Golden Globe, a Critics Choice Award and four NAACP Image AwardsHenson, 50, has also starred in movies like What Men Want, Hidden Figures and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. But the pandemic has meant taking time off. The upside to not being on set has been learning how to live a quieter life: I dont know how to sit down, I dont know how to not work. This was the only thing that was going togive me this time I needed.

Still, she hasnt stopped working entirely. At the beginning of last year, she launched a hair-care line, TPH by Taraji, based on scalp-relief remedies she used to make herself. She continues to work on expanding the line from the private beauty salon inside her Hollywood Hills home. These products go through heavy scrutiny, she says. Im a Virgo. Shes also continued to change up her own look; shes made headlines this past year for dyeing her hair red and, more recently, hot pink. Here, she talks to WSJ. about intermittent fasting in the morning and the work shes been doing with her therapist.

What time do you get up on Mondays, and whats the first thing you do?

My feet hit the ground no later than 7:30, 8 a.m. if Im pushing it. Im not an early riser, its just lately I havent been sleeping well. Before my feet hit the ground, I give a prayer of gratitude. Its all we can do right now, acceptance and gratitude.
